A thoroughly good read.
Books like these ought to be on everyones book shelf. 'The Forest Keepers' is a very good novel that cleverly blends story with social themes. The characters are real flesh and blood that exist in the real world, and not sterotypes. The plot is original with clever twists at every corner and you can't help but be curious as to the outcomes, most of which will surprise you. It's only after you've finished turning all the pages do you realise how well the author had you hooked.

A book with a unique plot
I enjoyed "The Forest Keepers" very much. It has a very good plot with interesting characters and some wonderful twists. I think this is the kind of book that children would want to read and adults would want to read for themselves and to their children. I read it in no time at all and I think good books do that, just carry the reader along.

A wonderful story for all
~Before giving this book to my daughter I took the time to read it myself. And I did it within no time. It held me from beginning to end without pause. This is how a book should be written. The scenes are set well so that one knows where the story is taking place and the characters become your friends in the first page itself. The story about three children trying to save a forest from deforestation, help a small c disappearances of fruits and animals from the forest is unique and completely original. Carl Gordon is a very creative writer with an eye on society and his story cleverly blends the ways of the real world with fantasy. When you read it you'll know what I'm talking about. This book is ideal for both children an adults. Highly recommended!

A MUST READ!!
This book is an excellent source on understanding American Political Philosophy. I wish this book can be sent to every congressmen and senator in Washington DC....they could use a healthy dose of this book.

an excellent synopsis of the tenets crucial to the US
Free Government in the Making is replete with all the writings of thinkers and politicians who helped shape modern democracy. Beginning with Locke, and carrying through to the 1980's, it is an excellent compilation of what has come to be known as American political thought. Mason has contained a wealth of political theory in one book. It has helped me through two years of college-I wish I had it for high school as well. A must have book for anyone pursuing American History or Government.

The best overview on American Political Thought
If you've been truly curious as to what the American forefathers thought or hoped for in the American political process, I would highly recommend this book. Although I am not a native of the United States, this book gave me an objective evaluation of how the great American democratic experiment came to being. This book should be required reading for all students of American history.

The book for understanding gas turbines
I have always used this book as a textbook of the gas turbine course for mechanical engineers and I find it perfect for its clarity and completeness.

Every gas turbine operating engineer should have this!
This is one of the best books available in the market today covering both the theory and applications of gas turbines. It is unique in that the treatment contains both theoretical and practical aspects of gas turbine engineering. As an engineer who has spent over 23 years working with gas turbines I have used earlier editions of this book and it has helped me immensely in getting a clear understanding of gas turbine operations and specifically of the components and matching of turbine and compressors. It is a well-written and organized book that has clearly stood the test of time- this being the 50th year of its publication. Unlike many other traditional gas turbine textbooks, Prof. Saravanamuttoo brings his vast practical and industrial experience into the text -a feature that many operating engineers will appreciate. This edition is noteworthy as it incorporates latest technologies relating to gas turbines (advanced gas turbine, low NOx combustors, new cycles etc.) while retaining it classic lucid writing style. Every engineer who operates a gas turbine can benefit from this book as it will provide a deeper understanding of different components and their interactions. I highly recommend this book!

This is the classic undergraduate textbook on gas turbines.
This is the classic undergraduate textbook on gas turbines. Not much more needs to be said than that. Future editions need to be updated to include computer examples and more on cogeneration and combined cycles

Ghostly Matters: Haunting and the Sociological Imagination

deserves more than 5!
i was blown away by avery gordon's book. i love her notion of haunting, that everything is "haunted" by the specter of something, that theorizing and analyzing what isn't readily apparent is as critical as examining what is apparent. gordon deploys literature to discuss haunting (and beautifully discusses toni morrison's work). this is an incredibly powerful text.

A brilliant conceptual piece redefining the supernatural
Quibble (as many well) with the specifics of particular examples, or the choice of them, Gordon's crucial conceptual leap is to explain the supernatural in terms of the psychology of anxiety, hallucination, and ultimately, religion and myth. Her work adds a critical, and unifying, piece to the work of Joseph Campbell, Sigmund Freud and others which ultimately go to the underlying workings of the human mind and the bases of consciousness.

This is a (hauntingly) beautiful and useful book.
I find Ghostly Matters a brilliant, useful, and (hauntingly) beautiful book. I especially appreciate the way Gordon brings together ostensibly disparate approaches and subjects (sociology and literary studies, the material and the spiritual, Argentina's "disappeared" and slavery in the U.S., and different kinds of writing in her own text) to call into question our conventional ways of seeing, to bring back those whom History and "just the Facts, ma'am" have tried to bury or relegate to permanent shadow. I'm going to give this book as a holiday present to everyone I love who hasn't read it already.

Risk-taking fantasy for young readers
I remember this book vividly from when I read it as a child. I checked it out repeatedly from the library (I can even picture in my mind's eye exactly where it was on the shelves). It was unique among fantasies written for young people in that it really was scary.

Many children's books make the mistake of talking down to kids-- they make things saccharine and elide the scary bits. They don't need to be explicit or blood-soaked, but at any age it helps if things feel real. Gordon is to be highly commended for not dumbing down his writing.

Jonquil is in a bad mood and wilfully deserts the rest of her class on a field trip to the backlands. The ground itself seems to approve of her going AWOL and she finds a piece of metal tucked among some ridges in the soil. This discovery pulls her into a dangerous adventure filled with vicious dogs, grey men, leather men, and the charming Elizabeth Goodenough. _The Giant Under the Snow_ is comparable to _The Dark is Rising_ books in that it draws from traditions of British folklore and mythology.

Difficult to find these days, but worth the effort.

Great Fantasy for Kids
This book is one that I remember very fondly from my youth, though I was not a fan of fantasy books. I read it again and again for the uniqueness of the story and because of Jonk, the main character, who has many troubles but at least as much appeal. At one point the book is almost too bleak, but this makes the conclusion even more satisfying. I hope you can find this one for your young teenager - it seems rare now. Good luck!

Great book for teenagers who feel alone and powerless
I've read this book many times! Great for any teenager who feels lonely and powerless to control their world.

Great stories from a great author
I already owned the trilogy and MacQuarrie Miscellany. I've read them so much the covers are worn. This book contains mostly stories from the original 4 books but the 8 or 9 new stories are worth the money. Yes, there are some new stories that include Mr. President, but there are also some that go outside of MacQuarrie's normal boundaries. A great book to buy a sports person as a gift.

Question?
I also would like to know if these are different stories from the Old Duck Hunter trilogy. The trilogy is the best 3 books on the outdoors written by anyone, ever! I will buy this book if it contains stories not in the trilogy (already own them).

A masterful story teller
Gordon McQuarrie is the most endearing author I have read. His Old Duck Hunters series is a treasure I have read and re-read. Can someone tell me if this Treasure of 38 classics are new and different from the original Old Duck Hunters series? If so, I would buy immediately.

The Guru of Malad

Author: Gordon Epperson

Average review score:

So easy to pick up and so hard to put down
The Guru Of Malad is a historical novel written by Gordon Epperson (Professor Emeritus of Music, University of Arizona) and set in the small town of Malad, Georgia in the 1930s. When a man of education and refinement returns home, the paradox of conflicting ways of life threaten to overwhelm him. Racism and bigotry as well as the uglier sides of sexuality and politics form a dark undercurrent in Malad, in this hard-hitting story. The Guru Of Malad is one of those books that are so easy to pick up and so hard to put down!

Excellent reading! Thoroughly recommended!
In his finely honed novel, The Guru Of Malad, author Gordon Epperson weaves a tale of life in Georgia in 1936---a life of gentility, grace and manners, at least on the surface. But underlying this superficiality are real characters suffering real problems that the reader can align and commiserate with.

Dr. Robert Dowland returns to Malad from New York City, not quite the success he wanted to be. This physician, pianist, poet and literary critic returns to his roots to, hopefully, accept the Presidency of Cherokee College and the success he so needed.

Gordon Epperson fills his richly inspired book with a well defined and developed assortment of people, each in their own situation, and each leading lives (like us) that are filled with joy, sadness and frustration. One of these characters is a black lady, Doris Williams, hired to be Dr. Dowland's part time housekeeper and cook. At his first sight of Doris, "...he felt the breath go out of him."

And so we have a story of life in the South in the 30's; race relations in the South in the 30's; and one man's image of himself as cosmopolitan, rid of narrow prejudices, who wants very much to be president of a college that did not even admit blacks.

This reviewer could not stop turning the pages of this epic story. Each was a revelation of what was (and could be)---all leading to enlightenment, fulfillment and a miraculous epiphany. Gordon Epperson, internationally known cellist. teacher, poet and story teller has used all of his wisdom and knowledge to produce this heroic novel. In this reviewer's opinion, The Guru Of Malad should be cast as a major motion picture akin to Gone With The Wind!

An Enchanting Portrait of a Small Southern Town
"The Guru of Malad" is an enchanting mix of satire, comedy, and drama--skillfully blended and beautifully balanced. Although the novel is not long, the people in this small Southern town become flesh and blood as the author gently but incisively exposes their frailties. However, he does not ignore their admirable qualities; these are complex characters. As the plot develops, Epperson takes time to explore the characters' interior lives to show how they have shaped their self-images. For example, in one passage, Robert Dowland, candidate for President of Cherokee College, affirms to himself his enlightened views on racial matters, rationalizes why he must keep these views to himself for the time being in order to advance his career--and feels momentarily irritated by the resulting moral dilemma ("It was so troublesome. Why couldn't he have been born in Massachusetts or New Hampshire? How could he, one man, change the mores of a whole region?"). In summary, Epperson creates a compelling portrait of this town. It is clear that he likes his characters, despite their flaws, and he draws on his own Southern background to make them real. This novel should have wide appeal and is highly recommended.

Readers may experience death by laughter.
The hokas are back! The fiction-loving teddy bears are out again on their pursuit of evil and adventure as they learned it from the earthlings media. And they are dangerous: readers may experience death by laughter... .

They're back...
That's right, the Hokas are back. This is the second book with the teddy bears running awok. Watch them act out both childern's books and history, come right to the edge of doom and than pull back with little or no help from humans. Funny AND a delight to read.

The "Demon Teddy Bears" are back! Hooray!
With the earlier publication of "Hokas, Hokas, Hokas" by Baen, all of Anderson and Dickson's wonderful "Hoka" stories are back in print. This volume includes "Full Pack", "The Napoleon Crime", and the novel "Star Prince Charlie." There's an awful lot of humor and joy in these books, along with the usual taps on my "think" button that these authors can't help but hit. If I'm very very good in *this* incarnation, I hope to reincarnate as a Hoka.

One of the best
The author is a medical illustrator and her familiarity with human anatomy is evident with each drawing in this book. Both male and female anatomy is presented, and the differences between each are noted. Where possible, the anatomical and finished drawings are placed side by side so that underlying musculoskeletal features are shown on the surface. Most of the drawings are of dynamic poses to show how the parts of the body work together. This book will be one of your primary references on human anatomy.

If you want to draw the human figure, click the "buy" button
I was struggling to get the concept of drawing the human figure even though I was enrolled in a figure drawing this class. Within a week of buying this book, and this is true, I was drawing extremely well applying what I seen and learned from the book to my drawings. The book shows you both the anatomy of the body, something extremely helpful since you'll need to know what goes where when you draw, and the bone structure and how one bone connect to the other. Louise Gordon's drawings are simply magnificent and can easy be achieved just by reading her notes and drawing the way she does. Once you do you can easily apply it towards your own drawing technique. And with the many depictions of famous artist drawing renderings, this book with give you a very high jolt in artistic vision to where it's impossible for you to not improve. Do yourself a favor, BUY-THE-BOOK and also check out her other books. If you start a collection of How To books, Louise Gordon should be a primary choice.

A SATISFIED READER
I thought that this book was great. It was really helpful. It had many great and useful tips on the human anatomy, which really helped me alot since I couldn't draw the human figure if my life depended on it lol. Now at least you can tell it's a human.
