Speck: A GREAT Book!
My sister and I think this is a GREAT book. We love how diverse and unique it is.
Does Mr. Smith have an e-mail adress?
Thanks!

The richness of variability
This collection is an absolute pleasure to browse. Rising like a phoenix from all the "stuff" we usually overlook, Buchanan-Smith has compiled a work - both sublime and stark - that forces the reader to acknowledge the potential value of everything.

Packed with color photos and intriguing essays
Speck is billed as a 'curious collection of uncommon things': from close-up photos of lint to very different bottles of sand from beaches around the world, this pairs unusual images of common things with reflections on what makes them unique. Packed with color photos and intriguing essays.

Thorough and efficient program
Although the program is designed for ages 8+, I bought it for my homeschooled 5 year old who has been reading since age three. The results were immediate and he is whipping through the lessons painlessly. Minimal time required per lesson, only 15 minutes for the student and 5 minutes for the teacher. I highly recommend it, though it is expensive.

Give it 10 stars!
My 7 year old groaned every time we mentioned spelling. She had low confidence in her spelling ability. The first day we started this program--WHAM-- what a difference! She saw that she could spell! She loves the 10 step study pages. Also, she likes that you only have to study the words she missed and not 10 to 20 words a day for a test at the end of the week. In this program, you take daily tests lasting just 5 minutes. Then the missed spelled words are repeated the next day.

I'm looking now for the activity cards. This program is wonderful for homeschoolers and anyone wanting to improve their childs spelling ability.

The author of the book recommends this for grades 3 to 12, but used it with her 5 year old granddaughter. We are using it with our 7 year old who is an advanced reader. Also this 10 step word study helps her with independent learning. She focuses better with steps.

They have their own website if you want more info. Just type Spelling Power into your search engine.

Excellent resource for stone projects
Of the half-dozen books I bought to help me with a stone project (old fallen-down stone walls recycled into a new retaining wall) this is the one I look at over and over. The first part of the book, under the heading Inspiring Uses for Stone, is exactly that: a group of beautiful pictures that can set your imagination running. The second part, Working with Stone in the Garden, brings you back to earth with the how-to of stonework. (The second half also includes a nice selection of full-color photos to keep your inspiration going.)

Like John Vivian's Building Stone Walls and Kevin Gardner's The Granite Kiss, Hayward's Stone in the Garden has clear and concise instructions. And, like David Reed's Stonescaping, he includes extras like stone under foot, pools and fountains, and stone sculpture. In addition, he includes some interesting (and helpful) extras such as plant selection for stone-walls or near stone pools and descriptions with photographs of the many kinds of stone availble in the US. (This is something that did not appear in any of the other stone how-to books I bought.)

As with Reed's Stonescaping, Stone in the Garden is just too pretty to take to the garden when you're working on your project. No matter how careful you are, when you're in the midst of digging or lifting stone, it's too easy to smear mud on your instructions. The easy solution is to photocopy the necessary pages to take to the project site for reference.

So many fantastic ideas and photos!
Twice now, I have gone to the bookstore to find a book on a specific topic. Both times I found a book by Hayward to be the book I had been looking for. This time I was looking for using Stone features in my landscaping. Since I had such a great use for his book on paths I picked up his book right away. I could not put it down and was up all night browsing the book from cover to cover. The photos are very useful and inspiring. His descriptions of how-tos, dos and don'ts were especially helpful. I have to give this author a lot of credit for helping us to improve our landscaping to look professional. I had a contractor ask me if I would lay stone for his wife's pond a few days ago - thank you Mr. Hayward!

No stone unturned.....
My parents used stone in a variety of ways in their gardens. My father laid out walkways and patios using blue flagstone and built an outdoor grill (chimney and all) of field stones he collected on his travels through the mountains where we lived. He lined the ravine behind our house where the grill was situated with stones, including a series of stone steps down into the ravine. The banks of the ravine became a rock garden loaded with all sorts of bulbs, ground covers, ferns and low shubs, and small trees overhung with larger trees above.

I had not thought about my father's handiwork in many years, not until I bought STONE IN THE GARDEN by Gordon Hayward. Hayward's book is absolutely lovely, and even if you never build a thing using stone you will enjoy all the wonderful photographs he has included in his book showing stonework he found in the gardens of folks like Frederick McGourty, Tasha Tudor, and a host of other garden writers and enthusiasts. He has captured shots of gardens from Japan to England, France to Canada, and New England to the American Southwest.

Stones frequently form the basis of the "bones" of the garden -- structures that every good gardener incorporates. While fences and arbors and other structures can be made of wood, stone also fills a niche and is frequently a more appealing, practical, and long-lasting material. Hayward's book includes numerous ideas for using stone. Chapters cover garden walls and retaining walls, walkways, ponds, streams, outdoor areas with stone benches designed for contemplation, rock gardens, rock sculpture, and many other features.

A third of Hayward's book covers a series of step-by-step procedures for constructing walkways, walls, ponds and pools, and other useful structures. One of my favorite constucts is the stile which consists of a stone composition built into a wall that allows one to walk over the wall and thus eliminate the need for a gate. Most gardeners are sure to pick up a few good ideas they will want to try.

Taylor's Guide to perenials
I am very new to gardening and found this book very helpful. It is cut and dry! The plants are listed in alphabetical order explaining where to plant them and how to care for them. It also describes when and if to trim them back and if dead heading is needed. I also enjoyed how one section of the book organized plants based on color.

A Must Have for Gardeners
I have many helpful gardening books but this one is the one I always come back to. It's best for identitifying plants or finding the perfect plant for certain conditions. Great photos and lots of them!

The most complete color encyclopedia of periennials!
This book is arranged like a bird-identifier book-- color plates in the front arranged by flower color with plant details referenced in the back of the book. The color plates are clear, good color quality, and provide close-ups of the flowers. Pen and ink drawings of plant profiles, leaf structures, and distinguishing features enhance the books ability to help the reader identify "what plant is this?" If you're looking for detailed growing conditions or a "how to", get another book. But if you're looking for a thorough, easy-to-carry-to- the-localgarden-nursery book, to identify plants and the flowers they will yield then this book is for you! I have tons of books on periennals, but this is the one that never fails me when I need to ID a plant or flower.

Great way to get your ham license!
I was a part of a college class in preparing for the FCC no-code tech exam, and over a dozen of us used Gordon's book and passed the exam! His method and approach are the key to successfully passing the exams!

A great book by the two greatest drivers!
If you love racing, and if you have the respect of great drivers you will love this book. I own many NASCAR books, and this is my favorite. The pictures are amazing the information is great. You can't go wrong with this book. There is one sad thing about the book...after reading it reality sets in that we won't see this rivalry on the track ever again. The memories are well-documented in this book and will live on! Thanks Dale and Jeff!

A MUST SEE
Some of the greatest racing pictures ever. What a great way to remember Dale Earnhardt. If you LIKE Nascar you will LOVE this book. I have seen a lot of George Tiedemann's work and this is as usual, quality work. Buy it!

Excellent images
I ordered this book a few days after the death of Dale Earnhardt. I've been a Jeff Gordon fan for a few years now, and loved watching the on-track duels between these two drivers. The stories and pictures compliment each other very well, telling the story of two fierce competitors and their respect for one another. I am sad knowing that there will never be another last lap duel between 'Wonderboy' and the Intimidator, but this book helps keep the memories alive. Highly recommended for fans of either driver, or NASCAR fans in general.

Travel Writer's Guide, 3rd Ed.
This is by far the best travel writing book I've read. It's meaty, chock-full of practical advice from what to do when to how to sell and resell articles. Very strong on how to organize, write and submit work and how to do it profitably. The 365 travel article ideas, examples of query letters, and info on tax write-offs and comps are a plus. I was surprised to find practically everything I needed to write successfully all in one book.

Money-saving/money-making advice for any literate traveler
Now in an significantly updated and expanded third edition, Travel Writer's Guide by world traveler and author Gordon Burgett is a straightforward "how-to" manual for paying for one's own vacations or even making a living simply by writing magazine and newspaper articles while traveling either at home or abroad. From planning a safe and profitable trip, to taxes and the law, to writing an effective query letter to magazines, to advice for converting a single idea into a multitude of articles, to the utilization of photos in composing travel articles, to tips for conducting interviews and selling copy, Travel Writer's Guide is a first-rate compendium filled from cover to cover with practical ideas and money-saving/money-making advice for any literate traveler who could use a little extra financial recompensation to underwrite their journeys by becoming a published travel writer.

Travel Writer's Guide
As a novice travel writer, I have read numberous "how-to" books on the subject, but Gordon Burgett's "Travel Writer's Guide" is by far the best. A virtual bible on the business of travel writing, Burgett gives the reader a clear, no nonsence approach to the ins and outs of getting your article published. Thanks to the the advice in this book, I hit "pay dirt" with my very first article. In fact, I sold it twice!

Excellent introduction to astrophysics
Astrophysics today is required to observe the infinitely small, in order to find answers for the big picture.
In this view the book explores particle physics before plunging into astronomy. It retraces the history of discoveries, starting from the ancient greek concept of the atom, all the way to the latest theories and discoveries made through modern particle accelerators.
The book does not propose answers; it limits itself to presenting the accepted theories, and does so with an everyday language. I would say the book is at such a level that anybody with high a school level of education will be able to understand it.
I would criticize the fact that the authors don't make questions that invite the reader to be more curious about the universe. We know there are inconsistencies in the existing theories but this aspect is not explored. Too bad because I think astrophysics make a very fascinating research.

Essential reading!
Reviews the major developments in science relating to the inner structure of the atom and quantum physics, and the efforts to understand the nature of the stars, galaxies and the universe. Easy to read and accompanied by clear diagrams and photographs, as well as comments on the scientists. Packed with information, making very complex ideas understandable. If you have any interest in what is happening on these frontiers of science, start with this book.

Very accessible and excellent graphics that support learning
This is an exceptional book because of the way the information is organized and for it's wonderful use of graphics. From quarks to Black Holes--it's all in there. I am not a nuclear physicist nor do I hold an MS--I am just interested in knowing more about subatomic particles and the gasses in the gallexies. That's why I love this book's approach which enabled me to absorb the new information and gain some understanding of the world of quantum mechanics. Gratefully, I can report that the authors have managed to make this material accessible and fun! I give extra cudos to whomever designed the book because it is a visual treat which begs to be read.

The Singapore Grip

A Classic!
This is one of my favorite historical-fiction novels with masterful story-telling on a grand scale. J.G. Farrell has succeeded in creating a realistic impression of colonial Singapore and the effects of the war on the "Gibraltar of the East." My favorite part is the one chapter that takes palce on the night of Dec. 7, 1941, the night before the invasion. Here we see Brooke-Popham, trying to reach a decision whether to launch Operation Matador or not, Sir Thomas, the Governor of Singapore, sleeping quietly before the phone would shriek with news of the invasion, LT. Gen. A.E. Percival, asleep too, trying to wrestle with his inner self, Lt. Sinclair watching the events in the Operations Room at GHQ, Maj. Gen. Gordon Bennett sitting quietly in his room in the Strand Hotel in Rangoon, a Private Kikuchi on one of the Japanese landing crafts heading for the Malay shores, and, ending the chapter, a young Malay fisherman starts to hear the drone of aircraft, heading south...
A fine story with Farrell at his best, he writes in his usual style with which many have become familiar with, it is sure not to disappoint fans of "The Siege of Krishnapur." A classic that should be on every book shelf in every home.

A droll & funny novel about the fall of Singapore
If you were to select a subject for a droll and howlingly funny novel, it is doubtful that the fall of Singapore would be high on your list. Nevertheless, that's what you have here! The action centers on the British expat community who, intent on their usual trivial rounds of partying and copulating, are completely oblivious to the fact that the Japs are inexorably creeping down the Malay Peninsula. The novel properly darkens in tone as the city's situation becomes obviously desperate, but it maintains its ironic tone throughout. The result is an absolute masterpiece, and I don't use that term lightly.

Novel about the fall of Singapore during WWII
An excellent novel about the plight of the British and Chinese before and during the fall of Sinapore. Meticulously researched, it fits under the genre of a non-fiction novel. Comparable in quality to Gore Vidal's "Lincoln" and Mailer's "The Executioner's Song." Simply brilliant.

great book flawed by characters of vinyard movement
This is a book well written on the subjects of work and relationships with insightful theology diffused through. The author also seems to attack the main theme in "Seven Habits of highly effective people". If so, it is a great job done. However, the vivid characters of vinyard movement (or vinyard church) invoke people's doubt. It provides good case studies for such church culture, but it diminishes the value of this book.

The Single Most Life Impacting Book I've Ever Read !
This book touched my life unlike any other book ever. At first I found myself weeping for myself and hurts and wounds I didn't even know were buried deep down inside me, then I found myself weeping for my father, then his father. Sins that enslaved me & that I'd struggled mightily with for over 30 years have fallen away! I most highly commend this book to all men (and women), especially those hurting or struggling titantically. This book has powerfully impacted the lives of many men in jail.

To encourage other men to come to be healed of their pasts
If you are one of those big, burly guys that doesn't want anyone to see you cry I suggest you take this book and read it privately, because if you suffer from any of the issues covered in the book, and 98% of men do,you will cry like a baby as the Holy Spirit works through this book and reveals your past hurts to you. This book is a must for ALL MEN ! Everyone has a father, whether he was there or not and Pastor Dalbey eloquently teaches you how your relationship with your earthly father relates to your relationship with your heavenly Father and with women in your life, and with YOUR SON ! Break the generational curse and be there for your son, your wife, and your God! This book will put you on the path to total healing.
