The airplane before it was
An incredible story of flight before the modern airplane, with an engineer, Robur, and the Weldon Institute. A story of lighter-than-air versus heavier-than-air travel, and it takes you all around the world, even over Antarctica.

Culture and Man
I first encountered this book while in High School as a small piece of it was reprinted in an anthropology textbook. Though Henry goes off of the deep end a little bit in the veracity of his anti-American rhetoric, most of his observations are fairly sound. Probably the best analysis of the educational climate and processes ofcultural and social conditioning in the 1950's that I have read. In a sense, education in America is still very much about "Learning the Nightmare" as he calls it, wherein children are socialized into an overly hierarchical and competitive environment.

Dynamic and defeasible deontic logic
The book has 12 chapters on deonitic logic by different authors. Deontic logic is the study of obligation and permission. The book has chapters on dynamic (Ch 4); defeasible (Ch 3, 9) and temporal (Ch 1 & 7) versions of deontic logic. The chapters deal with both law (esp. Ch. 8 & 10) and computer science. Several of the chapters gave helpful definitions of "act."

Diagnosis: Great!
I thought this book was a very good read. The plot has little twists in it that keep you on your feet! I also Love the story line. It isn't just one of those unbealivable romance stories that you know will never happen. It has stuff that happens in the real world too. It is a great summer read, or for that matter, a great fall, winter, and spring read too. If you like romance, you'll defiantly like this. e-mail me on what you think! (wildmagic79@hotmail.com)

A jewel of children's literature
Though not directly related to Jules Verne's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea - In Search of Castaways - Mysterious Island sequel, this book is very similar to them and just as good. It's a classical adventure, something that every child should grow up with, one of the jewels of world children's literature. It's all that - adventure and mystery, courage and love, gallantry and friendship. Left in the command of a ship by an accident, the main character, a 15-year old boy, delivers his passengers and the crew through all the dangers on land and on sea and sucessfully overcomes the evil intentions of their enemy, who was trying to sell them to slavery. Let your kids read it - it's a must!

The Dolls of Jules Nicolas Steiner
A beautiful book and a very well documented study with lots of photos to compare the different types of dolls made by this important maker. The thorough research that's gone into this project is what makes this book much much more than just another "coffee table book". In my opinion, this book is an absolute must for every serious collector of French antique dolls.

Exellent collection of short stories!
Even though this author in particular or in question, i.e., Jules Verne, will never wrote anything that was directly profound, cerebral nor astounding when it comes that of the work of the mind; he, i.e., Mr. Verne has in this pages of this book, been able to write numerous well written short stories. He is one of those great fantasy writers, e.g., Tolkien that will stand for all time and will therefore by read for several future generations. The stories themselves, e.g., Dr Ox, are all very well written and versed and are therefore a treat to read and ponder, ruminate and think over as one reads studies and examines the short stories in question. However, the best story is probably the story called "Town of Quiquendone"; which tells the story of a mad scientist whom plays with towns people's emotions at his own whim, desire and liking.' "A winter amid the ice" is on the other hand not very engrossing and a bit tedious (it unfortunately has a strong sedative quality to it, which is a major faux pas when it comes to literature) and is therefore the weakest of all the stories. Overall, I would have to say that this collection, i.e., Dr. Ox and Other Stories by Jules Verne is by itself and in itself a good read and I would without apprehension nor hesitation recommend it as a good piece of action packed literature.

A CLEVERLY WRITTEN SCIENCE FICTION NOVEL
This is a clever and good book. The townspeople were simple, conservative, quiet, and slow-paced. But because of Dr. Ox's experiment, they are transformed into the opposite. It has a happy ending in which they are transformed back into their original selves.

A silly, but amusing, mad scientist story
This is obviously not one of Jules Verne's best known stories, but it is fun. A "mad scientist" visits a sleepy town and, under the appearances of setting up gas lighting for the town, instead performs an experiment on the townspeople, turning them into frenetic lunatics. OK, so what is proposed wouldn't work in reality; neither would firing a cannon to the moon. However, it is a fun story.
