How Well Does Jules Verne Write?
What a charming author! His ability to write has astounded me; and I know other people who are enchanted by Mr. Verne's books. My personal favorite is Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea. I would highly reccomend these books for people aged 11 and up.

20,000 Leagues under the Sea summary
This book is about a naturalist who is invited to hunt for an ocean monster, but ends up in the monster, only it is actually an electrically run submarine. The captain of the submarine did not want any one to find out about it, so now the naturalist is a captive with his component and an agressive harpooner. He gets to explore the ocean, but craves land. Can he ever get back on land?

Excellent!
A collection of the greatest works of this great master.

The perfect reference for saltwater anglers !
This book has been a constant companion on nearly all of my fishing trips, regardless of location. I am currently on my second copy- the first was worn out from repeated use ! When a question arises about habitat, water preference, etc., we whip out the ole' McClanes to settle the argument. The pictures offer a true rendition of the fish which aides in rapid identification. The descriptions give vital information, while remaining brief enough to allow the book to function as a true "field" guide.I highly recommend this book to any angler or saltwater fish enthusiasts in need of a pocket guide.

Complete and Comprehensive
This book is very useful in every facet of salt water fishing, from fish physiology and habits to tackle selection. A must for every salt water fisherman.

No saltwater tacklebox is complete without it
McClane's saltwater fish identification guide is a must for every angler -- sunburned beginner or salty old pro -- who casts a line into our bays and oceans. The most outstanding among this guide's many strengths are its clear, concise writing in the description of each fish, and the strikingly life-like, full-color artistic renditions of most of the fish. The fish are organized by family; so where there are related species on the Atlantic and Pacific sides (e.g., among sea bass), the book does jump somewhat to and fro. However, with its thorough index and vivid illustrations, any saltwater angler should be able to locate that "mystery fish" in McClane's within less than a minute. This book accompanied me on every fishing trip in my years of angling in South Florida and the Keys; and many an unknown fish was revealed through McClane's pages. With this book, the difference between sheepshead and spadefish (for example) is obvious -- in feeding habits, location, water preferences and any characteristic of appearance. Whether you catch a Spanish mackeral, ladyfish, jack crevalle or even the ugly (but tasty!) guitarfish, McClanes can teach you all the important information about it, quickly. It's the perfect size for the tacklebox; but be sure to put it in a freezer bag to keep it dry.

Meanwhile, Jules Feiffer writes another winner...
Those of you who are long-ago fans of the wit of Feiffer's Phantom Tollbooth will be charmed by this picture book about young Raymond, who gets out of chores, perils with pirates, mountain lions, and Martians by writing out the magic word "MEANWHILE...," thus zipping himself instantaneously into a new story.

The book is filled with Feiffer's imaginative comic-style illustrations to go with the amusing story. I surely do wish Feiffer would write more children's books, his books are unbeatable for their combination of humor and imagination. Especially good (but not only good) for little boys.

Jules Feiffer strikes again
Jules Feiffer's "Meanwhile" is another great example of his feverish, wonderful brain at work. "Meanwhile" looks at the life of Raymond, a young boy who just WANTS TO FINISH READING HIS COMIC BOOK, FOR CRYIN' OUT LOUD! But no, his mother is calling him to do a chore and Raymond mutters, "It's not fair!" and then realizes that he can "meanwhile . . . " out of his life just like his comic book heroes do. Raymond zigs and zags around from one adventure to the next, always depending on "meanwhile . . . " to get him out of increasingly dangerous scrapes (it's hilarious to see the lengths he goes to to "meanwhile" in different situations).

When Raymond finally ends his adventures . . . well, I don't want to give too much away. Suffice it to say that Feiffer uses his usual masterfully simple line drawings to jack up the feverish pace of this wonderful tale. Boys and girls, kids and adults, will all enjoy this ripping good yarn.

This book was GREAT!
I really liked this book! It is about a kid who writes meanwhile on the wall and when his mother calls him, he thinks to himself It's not fair. When ever he writes "MEANWHILE", he ends up in a toattly diffrent place, from a pirate ship to the wild west. But when the kid (Raymond) comes back to the pirate ship, he doesn't have time to write "MEANWHILE" And meats his doom.

An absolute joy to read
This book was required reading for my Abnormal Psychology class and it was simply a pleasure to go through it. Henry writes with a poetic tilt that makes even the most tedious passages bearable, and his perspective is a refreshing change from the heavy-handed reading that's so common in our textbooks. I highly recommend this to any student of anthropology, sociology or psychology. Praises, praises, praises. Can't you hear me singing?

Brilliant, well written
A man at the top of his game! Insightful and deep analysis of dysfunctional family dynamics. Quotable lines jump off every page. Descriptons of the patients are vivid. A very big book, but very very readable. Excellent writing, excellent natural style, pleasure to read.

Great book for students of Psychology and Sociology
Jules Henry lives with and observes four families. His observations of their homes, lives and interactions, and his analyses are great examples of how to integrate psychological and sociological theory. While some of his assumptions are now outdated, the real value of this book, is placing the families with "mental illnesses" on the continuum with "normal families." He is also able to write without judgment and many of his observations give us great food for thought.

Return Engagement Plays for Seniors

The Art That Conceals the Art
Jules Abrams has done it all. In "Return Engagement," he has captured the essence of the aging process and the durability of the human spirit in facing up to the physical and mental challenges imposed Mother Nature. Morever, Mr. Abrams has done it in a way that bespeaks an appreciation for the way that seniors relate to each other--especially when the seniors are widows--an ever-growing group of women who share a life style that is little understood or appreciated by the larger community. Of all the forms of writing, I have always considered play writing to be the most difficult. Were I to try play writing, I am sure that would be true. So, I have read Mr. Abrams plays with great admiration for the sense of ease with which he creates his dialogue, builds his story line and brings each tale to a satisfying conclusion. As a professional writer, I know that good writing is never as easy as it seems. It is, after all, an art that conceals the art. In writing for senior theater, Mr. Abrams has chosen a difficult task. But he has done it well. And we are the richer for his efforts and his talent.

An excellent vehicle for senior entertainment
Jules has captured the essence of what seniors are all about, the drama, the emotion, and the reality. A snap to produce, these plays are fun. I have been involved in a number of Jules' plays and would recommend this book to any group of seniors looking to entertain or be entertained.

Featuring seniors in style!
What a brand new genre this book creates! Plays for seniors to read, perform and enjoy. Playwright Jules Abrams with great panache includes ten plays in this collection that treat seniors with respect, explores their plucky nature, shows them as sometimes impetuous, always full of life and eager for adventurous experiences. In "A Collie for Christmas" a group of women friends explore the possibilities of one of the group adopting a dog. What happens will warm your heart. A perfect reading for senior groups (senior centers) for the Christmas season. The one-act plays all have a narrator, are upbeat and two mysteries are included. If you have anything to do with senior residences, senior centers, senior drama groups, this unique collection is for you.

Covers the big and small cities.
I have always wanted to go to Sweden. I started learning Swedish when I was 14, and I started a pen-pal friendship with a Sweden at the same time. When I was 21 I finally made a trip to Sweden (March 2002) for 2 weeks and I used the May 2002 edition of this book.

I spent my time in three cities: Stockholm, Umeå, and Skellefteå. Most guidebooks that I looked at covered the south of Sweden quite well at the expense of the North. This guidebook used 25% of its space to write about the two largest cities and 60% to write about the rest of Sweden. (The remaining 15% of the book deals with formalities of getting to/into Sweden, language, food, etc.)

The section on Stockholm was fantastic, and since the chapter was organized based on each island or section of the city, it was very easy to read. You could plot out which part of the city you wanted to visit each day with ease. The book specifies open/close times very well (although you always double check). As someone traveling in the winter, I appreciated that fact! Some guidebooks don't list the months that something is open!

Whereas some guidebooks have 2 paragraphs on Umeå and Skellefteå, this one had 6 and 3, respectively. The cities are described well and the information is as much as you'll probably need.

Another nice feature is that the guide features fairly detailed information about getting to/from each city, even the small ones.

The third section of the book, about history, food, money, language, etc was well laid out, and the history section was as complete as most general tourists would want it.

The book caters to a variety of tourists as it lists a wide (very wide) variety of accomodations, restaurants, activities, and methods of travel. Other guidebooks aimed at "poor college students" seem to cover mostly pubs and nightclubs at the expense of museums. Guidebooks aimed at the "one trip to Europe in a lifetime let's use all of our stock earnings" books seem to cover hotels at the expense of hostels. This book covers both.

Overall, a very good buy.

An excellent guide to a wonderful place.
Sweden is a wonderful travel destination. It is beautiful country that manages to be both very tranquil and very dynamic. However, like most Americans, I was totally ignorant about Sweden. In fact, I don't think I would ever have gone there if I hadn't found this book in the public library. It got me interested enough to spend a few weeks in Sweden, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I will definitely go back!

The book was very detailed and accurate, and went well beyond the average travel guide in the level of interesting detail about almost everything you could possibly encounter in Sweden. Although the book was published in 1997 and I went in 1999, most of the hotel and restaurant information was still accurate. The book also provides a good introduction to the history and culture of Sweden.

review of rough guide to sweden
I throughly enjoyed reading this book, about a country which so little is understood, I baffled as to why nobody has discovered this fancisating guide to a wonderfully exciting, beautiful country. It's a must that you visit the beautiful, wonderous, exciting, young and vibrant and little known cities in northern europe Stockholm. Stockholm has been described as the "The Venice of the North". But Stockholm is far more beautiful, spacious, less crowded but best of all it has 24,000 islands in it's archipalego to discover. Don,t take my word for it GO!

A much needed and most enlightning book of hope..Refreshing
There are several self help books and books to inspire the soul and this by far was the most inspiring and moving and thought provoking that I have come across to date. The beauty of this little book is the simplicity of it and her powerful words of wisdom reminds us to do just that..keep our lives simple and remember what is really important to all of us.Every home should have a copy of this beautiful little treasure.

This book is the author's gift of hope, healing, happiness.
This compendium of optimistic outlooks on everything from love to patience, trust, kindness and virtue weaves together to give the reader renewed faith and belief in oneself and in life. Its affirmations are meditative; its illustrations incredible. Give it to yourself but, more importantly, give it to someone who needs to heal.

The most complete story of the campaign & shooting aftermath
Fabulous book! This is the most complete and comprehensive account of the ill-fated 1968 Presidential campaign of RFK ever written. All the speeches, campaign stops and strategy meetings are discussed in detail as well as an analysis of RFK's platform and the deteriorating political relationship with fellow Democratic candidate Eugene McCarthy are vividly covered...Witcover really puts the reader right into the campaign and it's never more evident than when the assasination and subsequent hospital stay and funeral are covered. Most books about this campaign cover just the campaign details or the assasination and none cover completely all the post assasination details like this book does (i.e. we hear about how 3 people are injured/killed in the funeral train procession). Finally, Witcover's conclusions about Kennedy's policies and speculation about his possible Presidency are right on target. Overall, this is an essential book in understanding RFK's transformation from the "Ruthless Cannonball" into a caring/[...] person who very well would have been President...highly recommended.

HOP ON BOARD THE "RUTHLESS" CANNONBALL
Hop on board the 1968 Campaign Train! All aboard! The train will be making nationwide stops. It's the Equal Opportunity Train! Join Robert Kennedy and supporters as he makes stops across country during his 1968 Presidential Campaign.

Tagged by detractors as being ruthless, the Senator's supporters lighten the charge by doing a parody of the "Wabash Cannonball," called the "Ruthless Cannonball." Robert Kennedy, then a senator, had lived with the charge of ruthlessness since his days as a young attorney prosecuting Teamsters and mafiosi. In fairness, the Senator does not appear to be ruthless. He appears to be a very determined, committed, goal oriented, compassionate and often driven man. He was the man who was credited with helping unify groups of disenfranchised persons; he was the advocate and voice for many.

Witcover's clear, precise writing literally places his readers on board that 1968 campaign train. In reading this book, one almost wants to cheer, "Hop on board the campaign train! Next stop, VICTORY!"

Sadly, the last stop was in Los Angeles the night of June 5, 1968 when Senator Robert Kennedy was assassinated. This book does an excellent job of discussing the tragic aftermath of the Senator's assassination and yet the question will always remain -- what would this truly good man have accomplished had he lived to be elected president in 1968?

A fantastic adventure in the XIX Century

Classic Jules Verne book both adults and kids will enjoy!
The story is set in the 1860's and is about several people from a fur company in Canada who set out on a journey to find a open a new store. They have to bulid it above the 70th parallel because that is where all the most animals are to be found in the area. They set out from their store in central Canada and head towards the west coast of Canada. Also with them comes a woman and her housekeeper whom she treats like a sister. This woman has traveled all over the world and now wants to discover the wetern part of Canada. Also along is an astronomer who came to study the solar eclipse that will be totally visible along the 70th parallel the following year.
The story talks about their adventures on their journey, finding the perfect location for the store, life at the store and how theire store turns out to be built on a piece of ice that breaks apart from Canada and begins floating in the far Northern Pacific Ocean.
Jules Verene makes you feel like you are there in northwestern Canada with his descriptions of the scenery. Verne also describes the characters and how they feel in a way that makes you feel for the characters and hope that they make it to saftey when the land becomes an island.
This is an excellent book about Canada and the landscape and climate of the area, and about the fur trading business that went for a long time in our history. This is another wonderful adventure book from Jules Verne that everyone should read. I am 21 and in college to become a high school english teacher and I this is a book that I would highly recommend teachers using as reading material in their classes. I will use it in my classes when I begin teaching.

Classic Verne in the Arctic Circle
I bought this book last fall, and after a month or two it finally arrived from England. It was worth the wait. Excellent. The story is captivating and the characters are memorable. The environmental issues cannot go unnoticed, nor can the allusions to Noah's Ark. Verne takes some shots at the fur industry of North America during the mid-1800s. He criticizes their endless and mindless killing of animals just for the purpose of making a buck. The story also demonstrates the will of man and the power of faith in God when facing seemingly insurmountable odds.
