The Art of Netting

Authors: Jules Kliot and Kaethe Kliot

A very useful and informative book!
This book is an excellent introduction to the art of decorative netting. Different netmaking tools, materials, and knots are introduced for the beginner, and many reproductions of published projects from the late 19th century are presented for more advanced practitioners. Projects for doilies, edgings, mats, and filet lace are included, as well as some items of Victorian clothing (fichus, mittens, purses, shawls, etc.).

Some of the projects could have been improved with the addition of more modern commentary or clarification, but on the whole it is a very good book for anyone wanting to learn more about the more decorative aspects of net making!

Interesting . . . in an odd sort of way!
_The Baby Maker_ has quite an interesting premise, to say the least. At first it seems a bit far fetched, but after a while you do get caught up in the magic and the romance of two lovers who were destined to be together. Though it gets off to a slow start, about midway through the book the action picks up and things start falling into place and making sense. The only thing I had trouble with was the fact that there are quite a few scene changes that aren't indicated by anything but a new paragraph -- these made for some very confusing moments. It's a fun, quick read, though not quite as good as some of the other 'More Than Men' books.

Excellent discussion of Russell's philosophical logic. Discussion of epistemology is a bit less lucid. Highly recommend overall.

The Children of India (The World's Children)
Published in Library Binding by Carolrhoda Books (1993)
Author: Jules M. Hermes

Great with one exception
We bought this book to take with us on a five-month stay in India, and it was a great resource for our two daughters (ages 7 and 4). The pictures and text are engaging, and the author gives a sense of what life is really like for these kids. He makes a special point of including tribal and Christian children, not just Hindus. Which brings me to the one exception to a glowing review: how in the world did he manage to avoid including a Muslim child?

The Cryptogram

Author: Jules Verne
Amazon base price: $18.95

A good yarn with some interesting twists in the cryptogram.
As usual, Jules Verne writes a good yarn. This one is about a successful Portugese man who is wrongly accused and convicted in the far reaches of the Amazon basin. He is eventually saved by the solution of an encrypted confession by the man who committed the crimes. I found the challenge of solving the cryptogram before I got to the "book solution" to be trickier than expected. The type of cryptogram is pretty easy to determine; but getting a complete solution means overcoming three unexpected hurdles, two of which aren't even mentioned in the book.

Cutwork, Hedebo & Broderie Anglaise

Victorian Beauties
Written ten years ago I feel this is still the quintessential book on Victorian white work, black work and Cutwork. I love the look of cutwork and while I have found easier ways to "fake it" when I really want the item to look fantastic, have the time and ability to devote to creating a high quality product, then I revert to this book. I will be honest; it is not a book for beginner heirloom sewers! But if you know the difference between Cutwork, Hedebo and Broderie Anglaise then you are likely ready for this book!

Firearms and Ballistics for Physician and Attorney

Firearms and Ballistics for Physician and Attorney
Interest in firearms varies greatly among surgeons and attorneys. A few are fascinated with the subject and others are repulsed by it. The authors have charted a course that will accommodate the demands of the least common denominator of interest. Following a discussion of the various types of civilian firearms and ammunition, including an excellent chapter on explosive bullets, the topics of internal ballistics, external ballistics, and wound ballistics are detailed. Ballistic formulas have been shunned; weapons have been sparingly described. The history of firearms and related and related anecdotes (although of great interest to some) has been avoided. All the basic information needed by physicians and attorneys needed to serve their patients, clients, and the public concerning firearms is presented.

Ballistics is the pathophysiology of the gunshot wound. Comprehensive information on civilian firearms and ammunition is presented to furnish the physician or attorney with information to better serve their patient or client. This book prepares the trauma surgeon to identify explosive bullets and to swiftly initiate the proper precautions during transport or surgery. Physicians and attorneys will be well prepared for court appearances and familiarity with this book will prevent their words from being manipulated, ridiculed, or discredited.

Dr. Jules Ladenheim is a neurosurgeon. Educated at Harvard University and New York Medical College, he received his training in General and Neurological Surgery in the USA and Sweden. During his long surgical career he has treated innumerable gunshot wounds and trained many surgical residents in their management. He resides in Teaneck, in New Jersey with his wife, Janet. Dr. Eric Ladenheim is a general and vascular surgeon. Educated at the University of Chicago and Harvard University his interest in Trauma Surgery grew during his residency at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, Illinois. An avid hunter and shooter, he lives with his wife, Karen and his two sons in Fresno, California.

From darkness to light to flight : monarch--the miracle butterfly
Published in Unknown Binding by Institute for Creation Research ()

Amazon base price: $
Used price: $10.99
Collectible price: $8.00

Fascinating details on life cycle of this complex creature.
This book tells the story of the life cycle of the monarch butterfly. At first glance the cover and beautiful photography may suggest this is a children's book. But the detailed design descriptions are more appropriate for adults. In fact I was never able to get through this book until after I had read a children's book by the same author James Poirer, "The Life and Adventures of Monica Monarch". The two complement each other well.
