escape Attempt Review
Summary: Two young guys (linguist and pilot) are planning to go for a hunt to an Exotic Planet until a stranger in whit pants and cap shows up and asks them for a favor: Fly him to an uninhibited planet anywhere in the Universe. That sounds like a swell plan to spend a vocation until the arrive to the planet and find it in the middle of Dark Age. They fill an obligation to interfere...but should they?

Personal Thoughts: the story is intriguing, the characters ar well developed and as always in Strugatskys' books there is a certain philosophical twist with some thoughts about social structure and marality of the individual. However the ending confused me quite a bit. i just finished the book and didn't have time to think about it but it does leave you a little bit puzzled. Over all an excellent read.

Fischer Vs. Spassky: World Chess Championship Match, 1972
Published in Hardcover by Simon & Schuster (1973)
Author: Svetozar. GligoriC
Amazon base price: $5.95
Used price: $5.25
Collectible price: $5.75
Average review score:

A contempory and readable account of the 1972 match.
A contempory and detailed account of "the chess match of the century", GM Gligoric sets the scene in a very readable introduction to the match and to each game. Detailed as his annotations are, as a very mediocre player I found that they were a tad difficult to follow and could be a bit dry in places, but were still followable and gave an excellent idea of the twists and turns in each game. If you're curious about the specific match or interested in the games of Spassky or Fischer I highly recommend it, but it would take a lot of self effort I suspect for an average player to use it to significantly improve his game.

How to Detect and Handle Outliers (Asqc Basic References in Quality Control, Vol 16)
Published in Paperback by American Society for Quality (1993)
Authors: Boris Iglewicz and David C. Hoaglin
Amazon base price: $23.00
Average review score:

Coping with Outliers
How to Detect and Handle Outliers is the last volume in a series of 16 books dealing with statistical techniques in quality control. The book is targeted for people in quality control whose job is to analyze data. The book is meant to be a both a "practical introduction to the statistical treatment of outliers and as a stepping stone to more-comprehensive and more-technical treatments of the subject".

Research is ongoing into statistical methods and Hoaglin and Iglewicz cover a small group of methods, which are "most suitable for application". The book covers outliers in 1) single and multiple samples, 2) linear regression and 3) factorial experiments.

I have read statistical books on experimental designs to collect data (such as Understanding Industrial Experimentation by Donald J. Wheeler) and evaluating sets of data (such as Evaluating the Measurement Process by Donald Wheeler and Richard Lyday). However, this is my first book dealing specifically with outliers. There is a short section on outliers in Quality Assurance of Chemical Measurements by John K. Taylor, but it is not very comprehensive.

Les Morts ont tous la même peau ; [Les Chiens, le désir et la mort]

Les morts ont tous le meme peau
I like this book a lot. I was very different from all the books, I've read from this author but I liked it a lot. And I really appriciate the fact that he was able to change completely his style of writing and pretend being someone else[Vernon Sullivan]. And eventhough the book is written in the style of detective stories of "hard school", the main story is really impressive and not cheap at all. I enjoy it. You can also see that he wrote it on purpose to make the critics even more angry so be prepared at some sexual parts and some slang.

Great light-hearted humor for early readers (and younger)
My son could not stop laughing when I first read him this book, and he requested it many times after that. Morris (the moose) can never quite get things right, and Boris (the bear) becomes quite exasperated trying to correct him. By the end of the book, Boris is pursuing Morris all over the circus tent, much to the delight of the crowd - and the reader.

This is probably the best of the "Morris and Boris" series - it gives kids an introduction to the humor of word play and just plain silliness.

The Paleolithic of Siberia: New Discoveries and Interpretations

A Reader Review of "The Paleolithic of Siberia"
A.P. Derev'anko's publication of the Paleolithic of Siberia contains a wealth of information about the Lower, Middle, and Upper Paleolithic in Siberia. This text is set up more as a collection of descriptions about different sites, and their attributes, than it is a running narrative of the Paleolithic history of Siberia. Any student of American Paleoindian archaeology should familiarize themselves with its origins in the Siberian Paleolithic. With so few translations of Russian archaeological works, this book is a great baseline of information.

Pasternak, a biography
Published in Unknown Binding by Weidenfeld and Nicolson ()
Author: Ronald Hingley
Amazon base price: $
Used price: $6.00
Collectible price: $10.54
Average review score:

Personal and literary biography
Hingley does a good job of approaching Pasternak, particularly given that Pasternak was so chary of providing evidence of his personal life. The biography was a good read, and certainly motivated me to read more of Pasternak's work. I knew a fair amount about Akhmatova and Tsvetayeva going in to reading this book and it felt like it filled in some of the missing pieces even if Pasternak is not a writer with whom I can identify in the same way. For me, the only unfortunate aspect of the book was the nagging feeling that Hingley was somehow taking sides in the veracity of the various women in Pasternak's life. It added a weird gossipy kind of tone to places. Still a commendable effort.

Stratification in Cognition and Consciousness (Advances in Consciousness Research, 15)
Published in Paperback by John Benjamins Publishing Co. (1999)
Authors: Bradford Challis, Boris Velichkovsky, and B. M. Velichkovskii
Amazon base price: $41.95
Average review score:

more than the sum of it's edited parts....
Although the term stratification is something of a misnomer, which each of the authors of this edited book feel compelled to repeat (often in a tenous manner), this book represents a clear account of consciousness research from a primarily cognitive science perspective. The main focus is consciousness as conceptualised within the cognitive domains memory and perception. Each of the chapters is lucid, and in addition to providing consolidation of the extant research, several novel approaches/modifications to the 'problem space' are introduced. Consequently, this book moves beyond the typical critical review status that similar texts can be relegated.
