Helps kids understand the conflict
This was a great book. It's hard to believe it is a kids book because you don't get many books for kids on this subject. I think it's great that kids can learn about the Arab-Israeli dispute in a mellow way. I really liked this because you start to understand what it must feel like to be 9 in Israel right now. I think the reason the Israelis and Arabs got over their fight (in the book) is because they relized they could share, and they could use it for something they had in common. And, in the end it all worked out, for everyone.

An important book - go buy it!
This is a great book on a subject that is not often written about for kids. It is written in language that draws them into the story, and lets them understand and experience another part of the world through the eyes of normal kids facing problems that are much bigger than they are. This book tackles the subject of distrust between Jews and Arabs in Israel. It is ultimately about friendship. American kids will be easily able to identify with the kids in this story even though the subject may be new to them.

Salt tap dances on your table, makes you blush with delight.
By just thumbing through this book for a few minutes, I realized that writing this book was a labor of love for the author. The recipes are magnificent and often unusual, showcasing the complexities of these two spices, ubiquitous to all our kitchens in the US. In addition, in true Jordan style, she researches her subject diligently and with passion. I felt almost ashamed for taking these two ingredients for granted. I have been a fan of Michele's cooking and writing for some time now, but in this book, she let's us see a little more of the person she is. In one of the most poignant vignettes I have ever read anywhere, she wrote about a recipe for Asian Limeade. "The first time I tried the real thing was ...in Borneo....geckos, the same green color as my limeade, scurried across the walls; I don't think I have ever felt so far from home." This is one great book, for the vignettes and for the recipes.

The salt of my cookbook shelf.
Michele Anna Jordan is a food writer for the reader. Her books are a road to travel in and around the subject, enticing one to rummage into spice cabinets, and through specialty stores and farmer's markets. If we can't hop on a plane to Malaysia, Michele will do her best to help us taste it. With Salt and Pepper, I found a welcoming mat for my pleasure of salt. There are no sneers across her pages as I reach for my sea salt to sprinkle more on my Edamame, or the Kosher flakes for my fresh summer tomatoes. "I love you more than salt" - that alone will be reason enough for me to bless each new wedding in my circle of friends with this book and a sampling of salt and spicy pepper!

Wonderful Resource for Therapists new to Sandplay/ Sandtray
This is a fabulous resource for those who want to start using sandplay in their work with clients. The techniques that they offer do not rely on an understanding of Jungian theory. The information is very practical and immediately useful. It provides detailed information about working with non-directed trays, as well as ideas for directed trays. It also addresses issues in using sandplay with children as well as adults and couples. This book has thrown wide-open the door of possibilities. Highly Recommended!!!

Convincing portrait of German society during Nazi reign.
Anybody who has ever wondered why things happened the way they did in Nazi Germany may find some answers here.

In contrast to other writers, screenwriters or film directors who sometimes prefer to dwell on horrific details of crimes committed by a totalitarian regime, Anna Seghers offers an insight into people's lives.

This is a portrait of German society of the late 1930s as realistic and convincing as one might dare to hope for. The fact that Anna Seghers was a contemporary distinguishes this book from many other works with similar aspirations. She wrote based on her own experiences, as well as accounts of friends, relatives or fellow exiles, while events similar to the ones narrated actually took place in her home country. (The Seventh Cross was first published in 1942.)

Seghers' ability to create believable characters is amazing. She managages to disintegrate the anonymous masses who cheered the Nazi dictators, and shows us THE PEOPLE in its diversity: Individuals with individual fears and hopes and scars from previous fights.

I approached this book very reluctantly, bearing in mind its status as standard school lecture (in Germany) and the author's standing as a GDR icon of Socialist literature. Segher's political views however, though clearly noticecable, do not harm the story and in this particular case may even have equiped her with a deeper insight into what really happened.

Apart from the book's informative value, the excellent writing style as well as the gripping story make it a great read.

great book about the escape out of an Nazi prison
Seven men escape out of a conzentration camp in Nazi-Germany. Their goal now is not to get captured again. Its difficult to trust somebody because peoples true characters appear suddenly. The nazis catch one after the other again, let them nail on trees and torture them in the cruelest mannner. At last there is just one tree left empty. The seventh cross is a fabulous book. It describes in an very vivid and exciting way the situation among the german population at that time. The people midst decides about the lifes of these seven completely different guys. It's not easy to find the way out through the tight net of nazis. Tough situation let peoples true face appear. Danger is everywhere and you can't trust anybody. Faith, hope but also evil and death are reunited in that seventh cross (last tree that is left). The whole story of one man reflects and embodies the grief of a lot of german people. But finally it's just another war. Silence will return. Nobody is able to ! surpress and reign in such an unhuman manner about other people.

The Best In-Print Translation
This is a classic and priceless work. Along with the other extant works of S.E. it remains virtually the only surviving record of teachings attributed to the very influential 4th c. B.C.E. philosopher Pyrrho of Elis. As such, the book preserves a now largely forgotten body of thought that rivals anything produced in the same vein since. I think there is nothing -- except a lot of multisyllabic obfuscation -- in the works of the phenomenologists, the existentialists, or the usually uneducated and thoughtless so-called "postmodernists" that can't be found in ancient skepticism.

I think this particular translation is also the best for most readers. (If you are a serious scholar and can read the Greek yourself, then you are a better judge than I of whether it's a good translation. What I mean is that it is the most accessible for modern readers.) Numerous other translations are available and several are in print. Annas & Barnes, however, both noted classics scholars and both persons who deeply understand and seem sympathetic to the ancient skeptics, have set out a translation very accessible to modern English readers. They have also set out copious notes and cross references that are very useful to more serious readers.

The previous reviewer from Colorado, incidentally, is off the mark on a few things. First, I doubt that S.E. was really interested that much in "truth." Though he may sometimes say or imply that that is his aim, I think he does so in a catty or coy way. I think he never thought he was going to find the truth; rather, he knew before he started writing that the skeptic simply cannot be answered -- there is no argument the skeptic cannot pick apart. As S.E. -- a professional doctor -- repeatedly says, skeptical arguments are like a doctor's medicine. They go in and dissolve the patient's illness, and then flow out with it to be disposed of. In other words, the skeptic argues not to discover truth, but only to dissect illusions.

Moreover, in the spirit of full disclosure, S.E. is not as timely as the Colorado review implies. S.E. nowhere mentions God, contrary to what the previous review suggests, and is not in this book concerned with scientists as such. Rather, he attacks the prevailing *philosophical* schools of his day, namely the Stoics, the still-lingering corpse of the Academy, and a group he calls the Peripatetics (meaning Aristotelians). This book is largely a technical manual of arguments to be made in response to the arguments of those other groups, which in turn are technical themselves.

That is not to say that this is not a fascinating book. For example, how interesting it is that S.E. solves riddles that would so traumatized Sartre and Camus 2000 years later!

A masterpiece on the study of knowledge.
Many books have been written on skepticism. But this one is the best. The author not only outlines what skepticism is,but spares nothing from skepticism. This is a refreshing outlook from the skeptical books published recently that link skepticism and anti-god,psychic powers, and so forth. A skeptic is really a wise man who calls all claims into question including those of scientists and other skeptics. His only goal is truth. Something that the majority of so called "skeptics" today know very little about. This book is not biased, and clearly shows how a true skeptic thinks. Rather than being the kill joy of so many people, the book shows that the true skeptic is not a cynic, but rather a sincere individual who loves truth. This is why so many views on God, dogmatism, and so forth are attacked in the book. The skeptic is intrested in seeing how the claims to truth stand up to his attacks. This book focuses on dogmatism in many subjects. This is the center of the skeptics attacks. We see that many views do not hold up to the skeptics critiques, this includes ironically the views of scientists and other philosophers. This is a classic book and deserves every bit of praise. I loved it .

As someone frequently traveling in Slovakia, I can only recommend this wonderful collection of pictures about this small, East Central European, young country; as I recognize something from my time spent there in every picture.

Great message: Every Child is Born to Succeed
"Dear Yuri, thank you for the gift of your heart. Your stories spoke to the child in me and moved me deeply. They spoke to me as an adult and moved me even more. The purity, the moral and universal values to which you gave such eloquent expression with such beautiful simplicity should be an example for others how stories for children should be written, if we are to raise a generation capable of preserving our species on this planet."

long overdue!
Recognition of Mozart's mother is surely long overdue but it was worth waiting for this well researched, involving, and at times poetic fictional account of Anna Pertl Mozart. Not only did it make me want to read more about the Mozarts but also visit all the places in Salzburg that are associated with them. Ms. Norman is to be congratulated on illustrating so vividly why women composers (or women artists of any kind for that matter) have had to struggle so hard for recognition over the centuries. She has certainly succeeded in rescuing one ANON from obscurity.

A fascinating, entertaining, fully engaging read
Liane Ellison Norman's Stitches In Air is a compellingly written, superbly crafted historical novel about Anna Pertl Mozart, who was the mother of the legendary 18th-century composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. An evolving, personal tale of conflicting family dynamics and the struggle to balance responsibilities to kin with individual freedom, Stitches In Air is a fascinating, entertaining, fully engaging read, and a very highly recommended addition to community library collections.

Atheist Masterpiece
First of all, this work was not written by Jean Meslier, and the real title is not "Superstition In All Ages." In reality, this work is Baron d'Holbach's masterpiece, "Good" or "Common Sense." Due to the severe restrictions on the press in the 18th century, d'Holbach published virtually all of his work under the names of famous dead people. Amazingly, the only edition of this fine work that is still in print does not even credit the real author of the work! Nevertheless, the substance of the book is the same. To be honest, this is one of the best atheist tracts ever written. It is a more cogent presentation of the ideas that Holbach set forth in his famous "System of Nature." He completely destroys any rationale for "God," or anything else of the supernatural bent. He relentlessly attacks Christian dogma, revealing just how truly absurd it is. Moreover, he also demonstrates how harmful religion has been to individuals and to societies, and why it is a highly immoral force. Overall, this is still a devastating and profound exposition of atheist ideas. Although I agree with most of his ideas, I must admit that I am not inclined to follow his materialism or determinism/fatalism. Beyond this, I would recommend this work to both atheists and theists alike. The former will be exposed to some refreshing ideas, and the latter will surely be in for quite the shock, as their superstitions will be thoroughly undermined, if of course, they make use of their rational faculites.

One of the greatest books against religion ever written.
Tough and going right for the kneecaps, this book is a masterpiece. Many of these arguments still have religious types scratching their heads.
