Very Insightful
This book originally was a collaboration between Kato Kaelin and the author. Eventually the two men had their differences and this book was issued without Kato's approval. Also, the book came out in 1995 before the verdict was reached in the criminal trial. Mr. Eliot does a good job of demonstrating how Kato when questioned by Marcia Clark gave a much different version of reality than he did to the author. Fear, gratitude to O.J. and self promotion appear to have won the day with Kato.

This book has much information which is not common knowledge. From this book a person gets a much more accurate view of life with Kato, O.J. and Nicole than press reports provided. Nicole's day to day life is portrayed and her various likes and dislikes. Kato's life with O.J. is also shown. Kato accompanying O.J. to film shoots, football games and other activities is documented. Various confessions of both Simpsons to Kato are recorded here. Some information is given about each of the four Simpson children. In short, if one is looking for little known personal information about the Simpsons and Kato, this book provides it.

Great guide for George Eliot's works
This book is not a careful analysis of all of George Eliot's works - you'd need a much bigger book to contain all of that. This book analyzes George Eliot's style of writing and the way she used the language to paint her fiction.

M's Mann uses many examples from M's Eliot's art to point out the wonderful wordplay inherent in the work. M's Eliot's sarcastic remarks, puns and metaphors are carefully chosen and explained. M's Mann's love of her subject material comes shining through her book.

If you are interested in George Eliot's works or you're a writer, wondering how does another writer generate plots and storylines, this is a great book for you.You will end up with a greater understanding of not only M's Eliot's work but the process of writing.

Great essays from the modernist era
I find that reading just the first two essay was worth the money I spent on this book. Pound writes his literary essay with creativity, intelligence, and humor that are rare even among the best essayists. "A retrospect" is a great guide to use for those who takes interest in writing poetry. Likewise "How to Read" will serve as a great crash course for the history of poetry, and provides us with an instruction on how to approach poetry. His personal critique of other writers are also worth reading.

A must read for those interested in the great age of sail.
One of the most fascinating accounts of sailing, history and economics I've ever encountered, this book is a must if you have an interest in the great age of sail.

Certainly more than a dry recounting of historical events, Morrison helps you understand the passions, motivation and impact on the economic development of the western world of those who came and went from Boston and other East coast ports in the early to mid-1800's.

The last two chapters, in particular were absolutely rivetting. The era of the clipper ships was not only amazingly brief, but possibly one of the biggest catalysts for economic change in the 19th century. In particular, the extremely detailed description of the activities on the deck of a huge clipper moving into a berthing at a Boston pier, completely through the skill of the experienced captain literally moved me to tears. Understanding the pride of a seaman in presenting the best face of his ship and crew to the watching throngs on shore is something that any sailor can readily identify with.

You'll find it a very rewarding read.

excellent scholarship from a truly great historian
Jane Sewell, who unfortunately died earlier this year (with a glowing obituary in THE SUN), was one of the best historians Maryland has ever had. Her ability to combine brevity with comprehensiveness shines nowhere better than in this volume on Maryland's 200 year history in American medicine.

Ms. Sewell touches on all aspects of the state's medical history, from the heyday of Baltimore medicine (which, thanks to Johns Hopkins and UM, continues to this day) to the impoverished conditions of the state's western and southern fringes. The grand scope of this book is executed with such mastery of content, voice, and detail that I would not hesitate to call this one the most outstanding histories of medicine ever written. I found the chapters both informative and inspiring, and advise any person studying or practicing medicine in the Free State to secure a copy for his or her library.

Arquitectonic richness of Mexican churches

It contains a large colection of photos that shows the great variety and arquitectonic richness of Mexican churches, some of them are not well know, and their splendor is in certain way product of the cultural hispano-indian sincretism. The photos were taken around 1956 by the excelent photographer, landscape specialist, Eliot Porter (who quit medicine for photography).

The Musical, Cats, Lives on in These Timeless Poems
If you are a Cats fan and feeling withdrawal symptoms since the musical closed on Broadway, you have several choices to feel better. You can fly to London and see the show there. You can watch the terrific videotape of the show. Or for a smaller investment in time and money, you can read your copy of this delightful book. Although billed as a children's book, this book is really for children of all ages who love T.S. Eliot's work.

Researchers constantly find that reading to children is valuable in a variety of ways, not least of which are instilling a love of reading and improved reading skills. With better parent-child bonding from reading, your child will also be more emotionally secure and able to relate better to others. Intellectual performance will expand as well. Spending time together watching television fails as a substitute.

To help other parents apply this advice, as a parent of four I consulted an expert, our youngest child, and asked her to share with me her favorite books that were read to her as a young child. Mr. Mistoffelees with Mungojerrie and Rumpelteazer was one of her picks.

Our daughter has seen Cats so many times that she cannot remember the number. Some of our happiest experiences came when she and I went to the show together, having worn out the rest of the family's interest years earlier. Each time she saw the show, Mr. Mistoffelees was her favorite character. After reading the poem here, you, too, will become more taken with Mr. Mistoffelees.

This book contains two poems from T.S. Eliot's 1939 collection of poems, Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats. The musical was based on these poems. In this version, the poems are beautifully enhanced by very colorful, well-composed, and witty art by Errol Le Cain. This book won a Parent's Choice award in 1991.

Mr. Mistoffelees is "The Original Conjuring Cat" and can perform many wonderful and funny tricks. His best trick is to produce "seven kittens right out of a hat." After you see him at work, you'll say

"Oh!

Well I never!

Was there ever

A cat so clever

As Magical Mr. Mistoffelees!"

If you are like me, you'll sing the verses as you read them.

Mungojerrie and Rumpelteazer were "a very notorious couple of cats." "As knockabout clowns, quick-change comedians, tight-rope walkers and acrobats they had an extensive reputation." "They were highly efficient cat-burglars as well, and remarkably smart at smash-and-grab." If anything was missing or awry, "Then the family would say: 'It's that horrible cat!'"

After you have bathed in the beautiful glow of T.S. Eliot's good humor and been warmed by the reflected light of the illustrations, I suggest that you consider writing some children's verse yourself. And the best way to do it well, is to enlist a child to help you. However the poetry turns out, you'll have wonderful memories together.

"And there's nothing at all to be done about that!"

Making It New
The rediscovery of Greek and Roman literature kickstarted the Renaissance in Europe. In a similar way, though on a somewhat smaller scale, the conveniently Imagist makeover of Chinese poetry by Ezra Pound and Amy Lowell undoubtedly had a seismic and far-reaching effect on later 20th century American poetry. In his learned Introduction to this outstanding and indispensable Anthology, Weinberger traces the many subsequent debts owed by a galaxy of fine American poets to that seminal work of re-invention. Such impressively talented scholar-translators as Burton Watson, J. P Seaton, Jonathan Chaves and several others receive an honourable mention, though their work is well anthologised elsewhere, and Weinberger¡¦s brief seems to have been only to include full-time poets: with the possible exception of Hinton, that is. (However, Sam Hamill's, Arthur Sze's and David Young's names have inexplicably been left out: all three of them marvellous contemporary re-interpreters of the classical Chinese tradition, and all three fine poets in their own right.)

Weinberger concentrates in particular on five exemplary writers: Ezra Pound himself, William Carlos Williams, Kenneth Rexroth, Gary Snyder, and David Hinton. They are certainly all major figures, and it's useful to have them grouped together in this way (particular since the last of them diverges in such interesting ways from the Imagist 'Less is More'tradition: though he certainly 'makes it new' in accordance with that central dictum, which is even quoted in the original Chinese characters both on the cover and on the titlepage).

I thought I already knew quite a lot about American translators from classical Chinese---a whole shelf of mine already groans under their weight---but the William Carlos Williams renderings were entirely new to me, and so were some of the later Pound translations.

For this reader it's hard to contain his excitement at such a beautifully produced edition (only spoiled by a spine-label that's somehow been glued on upside down), and I recommend anyone interested in either recent American poetry or in the classical Chinese tradition to go out and buy it straight away. It will admirably complement Minford and Lau's recent historical anthology of all translations (both European and American, and both scholarly and 'creative'), which of course covers a much broader range, but which is similarly ground-breaking and enthralling to read.
