Framing an Environment
If you value field guides, you will love this Time-Life edition of "The Walker's Companion" from The Nature Company. Several highly respected nature writers, including David Rains Wallace and Ann Zwinger, make contributions to this well-illustrated and highly informative text. Those names should give you a clue to the excellent combination of literary and scientific writing that makes this text a must-have reference for anyone who is interested in the environment.

This is a field guide that powerfully combines content with context in a way that makes the information about nature and the environment not only highly accessible, but intrinsically linked to the key social topics that are central issues in both science and social studies. Topics include the history of nature writing and in America, hiking tips, the study of nature throughout the ages, field identification and sketching outdoors. Ecological concepts such as food chains and pollination are concisely described and illustrated in a section titled, "Understanding Nature". Information about every ecosystem from forests, mountains and deserts to farmland and vacant lots is included in the "Guide to Habitats" section. This kind of comprehensive perspective about environment helps the reader to think about and see ecology in very relevant ways.

The format of double-facing pages per topic gives concise environmental information, making it easy to read, index and apply to the reader's world. The guide is an essential home or travel reference as well as a valuable classroom text that would be interesting and accessible for audiences from 10 to 100. The text is so versatile that I have a copy for myself and have ordered a class set for my middle school students for a wide range of class use including nature drawing, research, gardening and environmental education.

Walnut production manual - great book for fruit growers
I have read the Walnut production manual. It is the book that deals with all aspects of walnut production (orchard managament, economic considerations, marketing..). As someone who is dealing with problems of agriculture in the period of transition (post comunist period) I believe that every farmer that is considering the walnut production as an alternative should read this book.

A drop-dead gorgeous book
This is one of the most beautiful books I've ever seen. I wish they would have given details on the printing process for this book. I've never seen such vibrant, sharp, photographs in a book. They look almost as good as professionally done prints on photographic paper. As for the artistic merit of the photographs themselves, they are wonderful, something to get lost in.

Weather at Sea

outstanding overview of how weather works
This book presents the fundamental physics which makes weather happen and then presents the reader with the tools with which to make weather predictions based on local observations using this physical model. But it's more than simply a book for boaters far at sea who must rely on their own analysis of weather patterns. It's also very useful as part of a larger understanding of science. Every branch of science tends to have a small number of very important concepts which form a model of how things work. This whole group of models from different disciplines very often can be used to understand completely new complex systems that aren't yet well understood by any formal branch of knowledge. When you've learned enough of the models from different branches of science, you are able to understand complex system much better. This book contains one of those models of scientific knowledge which I've found useful in a general sense.

A book with depth
a book with depth I find in this book so many attributes of preservation of more than just wildlife. The book tells a great story of a man's dream, a kid's growth, and about how a bird brought them together. The man was real and was influential in bringing a lot of publicity to a beautiful place and a beautiful bird where I grew up as this man's son. this is a fitting tribute to him and all he cared about, before his time was up as it's caretaker. Especially when he never asked for the credit, or prestige for himself for what he considered a privilege and part of his job as a human on this planet.

Wild Apples

Thought provoking and oddly funny!
Thoreau has been able in these few pages to conjure up a deep rumination regarding the wild apple and how man needs to sometimes to become semi civilized in order to recapture the true essence of nature. Thoreau writes, "From my experience with wild apples, I can understand that there may be a reason for a savage's preferring many kinds of food which the civilized man rejects. The former has a palate of an out-door man. It takes a savage or a wild man to appreciate a wild fruit". This paragraph is simply amazing in its complexity regarding the fact the modern man has lost his touch with nature and by doing so lost his palate for the wild fruit. Even more thought worthy and slightly humorous is when Thoreau talks about the different stages that a wild apple goes through, i.e., the frozen thawed apple. However, the most powerful statement that comes out of this book is not regarding civilization or the apples themselves. When Thoreau states: "I fear that he who walks over these fields a century hence will not know the pleasure of knocking of wild apples. Ah, poor man, there are many pleasures which he will not know". This statement is revolutionary in the sense that this is the first time a writer expresses a deep concern regarding the environment. Thoreau fears that the wild apple will grow extinct and by doing so, man will loose an important part of his/her natural environment.

Wilderness Sojourn: Notes in the Desert Silence

A personal account of one man's spiritual journey.
For many years, David Douglas did an annual trip into the desert by his home. His trip was solitary, and he took the opportuntity to reflect on his life, spiritual condition, relationships, etc. This book is similar to a diary; recounting a trip through the desert canyons of the American Southwest. Douglas looks at the spiritual aspects of wilderness, and examines it from a Christian perspective. He examines Biblical precedent for wilderness retreats, and modern motivation to take time away from "civilization". The book is personal, but not exclusively so. It is written in a very easy to read, easy to understand format. As an outdoor professional, this book seems to hit home with the reasons why I use the wilderness as a tool for teaching. It is short; the whole book could be read in a day. I highly recommend it to anyone who has spent time thinking WHY we go to the wilderness, or to those looking for affirmation for thier own wilderness journeys.
