A highly useful guide for the casual entomologist
This title is actually one of the earliest in a very successful list of Golden Guides. It quickly brings the reader up to speed on the subject of insects in general and proceeds to lure him onward with fascinating information about each of the referenced insects in turn. When I arrived in New England, after an early childhood of city dwelling, my forays into woods and field, guidebook in hand, were some of the most educational times of my young life. I still have my original, ragged, copy of "American Insects" and treasure it.

Entertaining, with good lessons
After 4 fish discuss stealing, Tug alone decides to do it. This leads to his being lost. Because his "buddy" fish isn't paying attention, Tug's disappearance isn't noticed until the end of the trip. This story is entertaining for kids, but it can also be used to teach several lessons about honesty, obedience, saftey and thinking of others. It also has beautiful artwork.

A truly great book about the Last Unknown
See the first paragraph of my previous review for a sketch of Madagascar as a whole. As that book, Madagascar: A Land Out of Time, shows, this remote large island/smallest continent is a land of infinite, beautiful variety.

Madagscar has been separated from Africa for a good many million years. The world's most primitive primates, the wide-eyed, colorful lemurs, are located only on Madagascar as are the eerie aye-aye, the tenrecs, which are insectivores that communicate by way of sounds made by rubbing their bristly hairs together, etc., etc. All of these wonderful creatures, found nowhere else, and many more like them, are given extensive photgraphic and written exposure in this matchless natural history exposition.

The book also explores Madagascar's many terrains and types of vegetation. Numerous endemic plants are also examined in detail. The accompanying photographs are exquisite, colorful and carefully chosen. You cannot go wrong ordering this book and waiting for it. An excellent book for the armchair tourist to the graduate student, I rate as high as I can. It is a treasure.

A day by day look at Thoreau
"Oct. 22nd, 1837. 'What are you doing now?' he asked, 'Do you keep a journal?'-- So I make my first entry today." Thus begins Thoreau's Journal, made up of more then two million words and covering about twenty-five years of his life. No other work of Thoreau's better exhibits his discipline as a writer and his devotion to the natural world. In the Journal can be found the fragmented foundations of masterpieces such as Walden, A Week on the Concord and Merrimack Rivers, The Maine Woods, and Cape Cod. But what is perhaps more interesting to a reader of Thoreau's Journal are his thoughts and insights on topics such as friendship, love, religion, nature, bravery, heroism, war, slavery, the art of writing, and, most important to Thoreau, the art of living. Anyone with any interest in Thoreau will find his Journal to be an invaluable aid in understanding and following the life of one of America's most profound prose writers

Most Complete Guide to Mammals of Europe!
I have been searching for a couple years for such a book. This Collins Field Guide is the most complete and accurate guide to the mammals of this area. For example I discovered in this book that there is a species of wallaby the was introduced to Scotland. There are many beautifully illustrated plates in the guide. This is a must for any one interesed in the wildlife of Europe.

I am buying this book for my husband for Christmas. He has the entire rest of the Olson collection, and I know that this will certainly complement that. I would highly recommend any or all of the collection. Especially to anyone interested in the true spirit of the north, and all it symbolizes and embraces. Excellent work!!

Well loved and used on my boat
I have been daysailing my yawl the Winifred for more than 20 years here in the United States Virgin Islands and have thoroughly enjoyed this book as have my guest aboard. In fact I have worn it out so will be ordering another copy. The arial photographs are excellent and useful and the information pertaining to the flora and funa are a bonus. Anyone planing on a visit to the Virgin Islands would find this book full of useful information even if you are just sitting on the deck of your villa in the mountains gazing at the small islands and cays on your horizon.

A feast in words & pictures for OAK lovers!
This is a fantastic reference for anyone interested in oaks, especially the deciduous oaks, as a deciduous oak is featured in the book. Although written in the U.K., the representative oak in this book looks almost identical to the U.S.'s eastern White Oak (quercus alba) or California White Oak/Valley Oak (quercus lobata).

The illustrations are full-color and painstakingly precise -- a pleasure to look at! You could learn a great deal this way even if you didn't know how to read. Of course, reading is a pleasure too, especially since the book is so well-organized.

The various chapters deal with how an acorn grows into an oak; an oak tree in the 4 seasons; common animals (insects, birds, invertibrates, mammals) found in and around oaks, various plants and fungi found in and around oaks, etc. I learn something new each time I browse through.

Yes, I am an oak-nut, as if you couldn't tell. :) If you are too, I wholeheartedly recommend this book! You will truly love it.
