"Dig Fast Die Young"
Do you think your boss is concerned about your health and safety? Probably not until it affects your ability to move dirt. How many mandatory "safety meetings" have you been to where a long list of hazards is read aloud, and then ignored for the rest of the project. So here's a good book for those in the trenches and labs. Chapters on biological hazards (Lyme Disease, Rabies, Valley Fever, Hantavirus, Histoplasmosis, Anthrax, Tetanus, Smallpox) made me think twice about licking bone to see if it sticks to my tongue (throw it in the bag, and give the people in the lab something to do). Perhaps even more horrific is the archaeology of toxic waste; the chemical soup we work in: embalming fluids, tetrachloroethylene, coke, mercury, or just lead. "Dig Fast, Die Young: Unexploded Ordnance and Archaeology" says it in a nut shell. If you wait until your bosses read this book, and expect them to protect you, it will probably be too late.

THE DINOSAUR TRACKERS' 'MUST HAVE'!
This is the most essential (to serious professional and amateur paleontologists) book on dinosaur tracks that has ever been published, and that is probably the reason it is still in print after eleven years. A few words of review will not do justice to this book, which has 71 contributing authors from all over the world! It includes: Dinosaur tracks and trackways so old that they were produced when only about 3% to 5% of reptiles were dinosaurs; A detailed scientific description (also photos and drawings) and naming of Brontopodus birdi (the tracks and trackways of huge Sauropods of Texas and elsewhere); Detailed photographic, graphic, and geological description of the Briar Site, a huge Sauropod trackway site in Arkansas; Description of Pterosaur (non-dinosaurian flying reptiles)foot structure (skeletal), as it relates to Pterosaur tracks and trackways; Details of magnificent Iguanadontian footprints in the Waelden of East Sussex; Dinosaur foorprints of Western Canada; Comparison of ratite footprints and trackways with tridactyl footprints and trackways reasonably attributed to Mesozoic dinosaurs; An important examination of dinosaur trackway beds of the Gulf Coastal Plain of the U.S.A.; Footprints of 'swimming Sauropods' in Morocco; "The Stance of Dinosaurs and The Cossack Dancer Syndrome"; Detailed analysis of elongate dinosaur tracks (plantigrade tracks), with demonstration that 'creationist' claims that some of these are 'man tracks' is completely wrong; and descriptions of dinosaur tracks found in countries across our planet. Really, what is mentioned here is a mere drop in the knowledge bucket of what this essential book has to offer to those of us who realize that dinosaur trackws are the most direct 'window' from which we can 'view' the paleo-environments, life styles, and dynamic abilities of the living dinosaurs that left an abundance of tracks across our world. Do not make the very serious mistake of not having this volume on your book shelf when, inevitably, it becomes no longer available. Serious about dinosaur track studies? If so, GET THIS BOOK! It is a reference that will be become a treasure over the years.

Propably the best introducory textbook on the market
Of the four textbooks on the subject I've been through, this one scores the best credit. Within ecological economics there are two schools of thought. One is basically environmentalist in the sense that views the causes of environmental degradation, as being the economic system AS SUCH. Herman Daly is propably the most wellknown representant of this school. The other school deals with environmental problems as being a 'problem of getting the prices right'. This book is mostly concerned with the latter approach. Several aspects of this book ranks it above average. These are: 1) Although the book primarily deals with the market-approach, it actually covers all aspects of environmentalism, ranging from standard economics to deep ecology, treating each of the in a sober manner, 2) the book is very goos at pinpointing the problematic aspects of different theories, 3) The conclusions are supported by empirical evidence, presented in a readable and realevant manner 4) it really covers the breadth of the field, leaving you with a great overview of the topics you can specialize in, 5) it avoids some of the most common misunderstandings of the field, e.g. by specificly stating the difference between non-property resources and common property resources. All In all: It is a very recommendable book for those who are about to be introduced to the field of ecological economics.

The best reading copy of Thoreau's short prose
Astonishing that so many pages of such great writing (and such wonderful, interesting annotations) can be purchased for so little money. We have needed an inexpensive annotated edition of Thoreau's best short prose for a very long time, and this clearly fits the bill. Teachers and students, in particular, will find this book extraordinarily useful. The Thoreau material and annotations alone are extraordinarily valuable, but Hyde's excellent introduction on Thoreau's "Prophetic Excursions" make this the best deal available for a Thoreau book. Buy it; you'll be glad you did!

A superbly presented body of information
In Walking With Dinosaurs: The Evidence, Dave Martill (Senior Research Fellow in Paleontology at the University of Portsmouth, England) and Darren Naish (postgraduate researchers in the School of Earth, Environmental and Physical Sciences at the University of Portsmouth, England) effective collaborate to explore the discoveries associated with the rapidly advancing body of science about dinosaurs and how they lived. Beautifully, profusely illustrated, Walking With Dinosaurs: The Evidence provides young readers with a superbly presented body of information on how the bones of dinosaurs and the ground in which they are discovered can lead to conclusions about such diverse issues as feeding habits, movement, mating, habitats, climate, and more. Also very highly recommended for personal, school and community library dinosaur reference book collections for young readers is Mike Benton's Walking With Dinosaurs: Fascinating Facts (078947168X, $9.95).

The Falcons of the World by Thomas Cade
Having acquired this book a while ago through a rare books dealer for [money], I would say that it was a worthwhile purchase. Any lover of the birds of prey would appreciate this attention-demanding volume. It is extraordinarily heavy- a full-sized coffee table book- and brimming with full-color plates of the raptors. Each illustration, picturing even the rarest of these birds, is accomanied by an appreciable amount of data and information. A very worthwhile purchase!

Handbook for raising Tom Sawyer
I hardly know where to begin. Like the Boys' and Girls' Handybooks, this hefty little book is full of ideas from a bygone era. Written in 1906, the activities are not always the kind of things our kids can do today...but this is a book of IDEAS! While you might not want to camp in a swamp, this book will tell you how. That information might come in useful for another project someday. The book also has historical value--the vocabulary is sometimes quite dated--but that's part of the fun!
Other ideas from the book, which is organized by season: Kites, herbarium, quail farming, bird houses, cages, aquaria, carts, rafts, boats, camping, indoor ideas, outdoor cooking, sleds, packs, and so much more. Oh, and DO learn how to cook a muskrat!

Invaluable Quick-Reference
Frankel's Field Guide to Clinical Dermatology is a convenient pocket-sized daily working manual for the recognition and treatment of the most commonly encountered dermatological conditions in the clinic, at the bedside, and in examinations. As such it is particularly suitable for medical undergraduate students and health care specialists. The text is written in a concise and user-friendly manner and is clearly integrated with abundant high quality colour clinical photographs. The contents are presented in a unique and informal format, which reflect the author's desire to provide readers with better accessibility to the facts and facilitate greater ease in the identification and interpretation of various skin lesions. For example, rashes are described under the easy to understand headings "rashes that itch a lot", "red rashes on the face", "red rashes (not on face)" and "scaling rashes". Other areas covered in a similar fashion include blisters, bumps, spots, leg ulcers, nails and folds, hair loss and procedures and supplies. Perhaps one of the best features of this text is the inclusion of a useful section on differential diagnosis and how to make the diagnosis for each dermatological disorder-necessary and helpful information for the uninitiated or inexperienced eye. With the emphasis throughout on simplicity and accessibility, there is less focus on pathogenesis and aetiology. However, this field guide is not essentially a picture book. Indeed, the author provides more than sufficient detail on symptoms and signs, treatment options and prognostic information to compensate for less direct mechanistic content. Overall, Frankel's Field Guide to Clinical Dermatology is an invaluable quick-reference/revision dermatological text which successfully combines qualities of a very good diagnostic atlas with its incorporation of numerous colour illustrations as well as also providing all the essential details on the common or classical skin disorders.
