A young girl's growth into wife, mother and helpmate.
This young girl overcomes whatever life has to throw at her. She was--and still is my ideal. I first read this book when I was about 10 and re-read it every year or so. My original book was recently lost during a move and I now have to have another. As I read, I became this young girl and seemed to experience her love, heartache, and adventure. It is difficult to read when you are crying so hard you can't see the page. I have read this so often that I now start crying pages before I should. This is a life-learning book that should be required reading in middle school or even high school. Normally, I like books, I cherish some books but this book will always be my favorite love. I wanted to be Katherine Mary Flannigan. I only have 1 daughter and her name is Kathryn.

My favorite book of all time
I first got this book when I was in 7th grade over 25 years ago and have read it at least 8 times. After our cat used it to make a birthing bed I searched for it again until I found another. I recommend this book to any women young and old, I could read it over and over.

An people today think they've got a hard life.
Another required reading book from junior high . . . it was wonderful. My mother and my grandmother both read and loved it.

The life she led makes you count your blessings. Such heartbreak and such love.

Thought Provoking Alternative
Abolishing Performance Appraisals makes a powerful case for removing this well intended yet ineffective ritual organizations have been requiring for decades. Indeed, Coens and Jenkins provide solid reason why appraisals have to go, to be replaced with quality feedback mechanisms including coaching and support structures that enable employees to maximize their own potential. No one reading this book would challenge its basic argument. My primary concern was in the prescription. They recommend you recruit a group of stakeholders as your design team, to explore the problem in your own organization, and to arrive at alternatives that align with your organization's mission. Considering that Coens and Jenkins affirm W. Edward Deming's claim that 94% of performance outcomes are attributable to the system, they are less robust in offering concrete guidelines on what "the system" should look like. This book is excellent in describing the history of the problem and highly persuasive in its message. It accomplishes that goal. If the reader is interested in exploring a system that is a clear alternative, that is simple in scope and provides a strong transition from the current mess, I recommend you pick up Catalytic Coaching - The End of the Performance Review by Gary Markle. Equally thought provoking on the issue, but a stronger set of steps on how to approach the problem.

Dignity in the Workplace
This is an important and well written book. The authors, Tom Coens and Mary Jenkins, think it is time for organizations to begin treating employees like the adults that they are. There is too much patriarchal and paternalistic hand-holding, and way too much time spent monitoring, evaluating and judging individuals. The authors advocate dropping the ritual of performance appraisal as a vital step, in itself, and for the "undercurrent" that appraisal represents, towards freeing the human spirit in organizations. This undercurrent "hangs like a cloud, pervades the workplace atmosphere...." It is the "personnel policies, human resource practices, and most importantly, the organization's unseen culture (values and beliefs) about people. It sends messages that people are not interested in working or improving the organization, messages that people are children who need to be directed and controlled in an atmosphere much like a traditional school." This is powerful stuff.

Coens and Jenkins want us to get busy on working together towards improving processes and the system of delivering value to our customers, and give up the quest for finally pinpointing, once and for all, who the "1"s, "2"s, "3"s, etc. are in the organization. They want us to quit thinking that a person's value and performance can somehow be reduced to a number. They explain how this is a fallacy and illusion, given the impossibility of separating out the individual's contribution from the contribution of the system or environment that she works in, inherent measurement and judgment biases, and organizational politics. More importantly, such reductionism is degrading and demoralizing to the individual. And "we trivialize an individual's work, often involving heart and soul, from something unique and wonderful into a cold and sterile numerical rating that purportedly signifies the person's total contribution."

The approach the authors take is to first surface, then examine, and ultimately attack the assumptions underlying appraisal, and then to build alternatives from "newer, more hopeful assumptions." They are thorough and convincing in making the case to abolish performance appraisal.

W. Edwards Deming, who mentored Jenkins, was often asked, "But if we eliminate performance appraisal, then what will we replace it with?" He would reply, "Try leadership." Whereas Coens and Jenkins would surely support such a true and succinct response, they also offer specific guidelines and methodology for an organization to wean itself from the nonproductive and harmful anachronism of performance appraisal. For example, they describe how to effectively "debundle" management concerns, such as motivation, coaching, counseling, retention, discharge, goal setting, pay, promotion, and discipline, which are often packaged as part of the appraisal process.

I highly recommend this book for anyone who values dignity, respect, and trust in the workplace, and who believes that holding such values is crucial in striving for true organizational excellence.

Everyone giving or receiving appraisals needs to read this!
Coens and Jenkins evaluate each and every "assumption" we use in defense of performance appraisals, and help us to see clearly that what we get from appraisals is not what we are hoping for. They don't try to sell quick replacements, but offer ways to accomplish what we really want out of appraisals through developing brand new assumptions in the workplace -- such as trusting employees, and focusing on improving systems and processes to improve organizational performance.

A resource that will enlighten all well-meaning managers and employees who think we have to have the annual performance appraisal, but are always disappointed in the results!!

This is my favorite book!!! I've read it 13 times!!!
Reading this a age 11 changed my life. I was forever obsessed with the middle ages, and this filled every craving for my infatuation with Scotland, leaving me only desiring a sequel. Quest for a Maid is my favorite book, and I have read it over thirteen times, never tiring of it. I'm on the edge of my seat every time, and can never put it down once started. Words cannot express the wonder and magic of this book, with its quirky characters and hauntingly beautiful storyline full of humanity and suspense. More than a masterpiece, this book is comfort food for the soul.

Unlike any fantasy book I've ever read
This book surprised me and drew me in from the opening line, "When I was nine years old, I hid under the table and heard my sister kill a king." How could anyone resist an opening like that? Quest for a Maid follows its own guidelines about how a fantasy should be written. The evil villainess in this book is also the main character's idol. Our heroine has no magical powers or battle skills, only her wits and courage. Much of the book describes Meg's childhood, which lends the book a kind of innocence to contrast against the elder sister's intrigues. Meg, Davie, and Peem form an adventuresome and loyal trio. You may even find yourself liking the evil villain, though we see little of what she does. Much of this book is written phonetically, but after you get used to it, you'll find yourself thinking in a Scottish accent. This book will make you think twice about love, sin, and redemption. A rare book. Read and enjoy.

Fascinating story set it medieval Scotland
I accidently "rediscovered" this book a couple months ago, and it captivated me the second read as much as it had the first. The first time I read it, it had so much impact that 3 or 4 years and probably 100s of books later (yes, I read a lot) it was one book that I always remembered, even when I couldn't remember the title or author. When I accidently found it again while browsing the library book shelves, it was like finding an old friend! This book has an excellent and realistic portrayl of life in medieval Scotland, and really brings you into a different world. But also, the story is just really interesting and the characters are very well written. I loved seeing several years in Meg's life unfold and whatever was happening to her was always interesting to me, from the whale adventure, to sailing, to the witch sorcery, to living with Davy's family, to the actual 'quest for the maid' itself.

I definatly reccommend this book to anyone interested in medieval times or Scotland, or someone who just likes a good story with adventure and a bit a romance. Though, if you are a reader who only likes really fast-paced books, it might not be for you, since while it does have exciting adventure parts, some parts are slower.

Cropped and missing fairies
There are 6 fairies that never made it into the book: Cat's Ear, Convolvulus, Goose Grass, Scentless Mayweed, Sorrell, and Wild Thyme. Also, some of the images are cropped out of context, grossly enlarged, etc. Nice collection, but if you want pictures to sit and pore over, get the little reproductions of the books.

The Most Wonderful book of Fairires I have ever found.
Now I'm an adult who ran across the book just a little while ago. I have always loved fairies, but was not really into the horrid interpretations of modern day artiest. This book is so amazing it's unreal! The artwork is so beautiful and delicate. She painted them as beautiful wide-eyed children and adolescents, with absolutely amazing accuracy on the accompanying flowers. The poems for each flower fairy describes the chararistics of the flower with such grace it sends chills up my spine. A WONDERFUL book for parents to read to their children, as well as a great book for adults who want to stay children at heart. I can not express enough the beauty and gentleness of her artwork enough! The book here contains all 8 of the Flower Fairies books as well as story of The Fairy Necklaces and the poems she illustrated for Old Rimes for All Times. You will not be disapointed.

Good Pictures
Since I can remember I have loved th faerie series and this book is what I wanted most for my birthday. The pictures kept me (and still do) occupide for hours with friends and alone. Me and my friends play a game with it where we open a page and point to the faeries nameing what we think each one is. Here is an examble of what we call the faeries, cute, pretty, and fun. If you have a daughter or if you like faeries, order this book.

What a bargain!
This book is a very comprehensive account of the discovery of a revolutionary drug to treat breast cancer. Very pleasant to read, the author guides you through the process which goes from discovering the drug almost by chance, making the trials (from a very human point of view) to the final approval of the drug. If you want to read a very enjoyable book about science, drug development, Phase III trials and human hope, don not look further....

Razor Sharp Reporting
This book is written with tight-as-a-drum research and detail. It read like a great suspense novel. As we sit on the edge of our seats for a cure for this devistating disease, Bazel shows us the behind-the-scenes deadlines cancer patients and doctors are working for everyday. This was an unbelievably good book.

A must read for anyone fighting breast cancer
I wish I had read this book last year. I ordered while my sister was being treated with Herceptin for a recurrence of breast cancer. Unfortunately, she died before I could get the book.

This book give real insight into the politics of cancer treatment - the passiveness of some oncologists, how an executive's own personal experience with a disease can determine if drug development will go forward or not, and how women are becoming more aggressive in monitoring their own treatment.

Bazell talks about the frustrations of critically ill and dying women in trying to work through the medical, academic and managed care maze to get the treatment they need.

This drug has been the 'magic bullet' for many women. It has been called the start of a new era is disease treatment. It is essential for anyone involved in this disease to read this book, to understand what they are up against and how they can help themselves.

Great book, ....eh ending
I think of myself as a fairly avid fan of Dragonlance. And there are a couple of elements about the series that i like; like the fact that the some, 90+ books that have been written about the world of Krynn are, well, just that, about Krynn. What I mean is that the saga, once you're into it and familiar with the history, geography, etc, you can read a new story and things make sense. Another element that I like about the Dragonlance saga is the fantastic element (ie, dragons, chivalry of knights, and MAGIC). I like that fact that this book reassures me in both of those elements. The setting starts the book around the time slightly before the War of the Lance and the Companions, in a not-so-well known part of Krynn. And since the entire book is about magic and the study of it, it gives a very good look behind the every-day workings of magic, and insight into how and exactly what magic skills mean. Magic has always been such an elusive force in the Dragonlance world, where all they talk about is uttering of words and vague things like, "concentration" and "feeling of magic inside". This book really helps to change that.

This book was an excellent read for magic-lovers like myself, and had most of the elements that make a good Dragonlance book, like a good plot, a love interest, and and a well-developed, main character. If you like magic/Dragonlance/a good read, get this book. It may not be one of the VERY BEST DL books I've read, but it's still well worth the time, especially if you're a DL fan.

In fact, my only problem with this book was one aspect of the ending (if you haven't read the book, you may want to look away now...); Guerrand's sister is not addressed in the ending... She was perhaps my favorite character(i think it was because she seemed like such a helpless caged bird that tried so hard, and i'm really taken in for those "romantic"-type characters) in the book, and everything wraps up nicely except her... what happens to her? Why didn't she find out where Guerrand lived and ran away from home to Palanthas? Why didn't she just run away to begin with?? I know that the second book continues the story, so I'm hoping for the best....

Great Intro to the Magic in Krynn.
This book provides alot of information about the three orders of magic in Krynn. A vague story of the Cataclysm and the Lost Citadel is told well in this story.

For the storyline, I found it pretty interesting. There are several plot twists, which reveal what actually happened in the previous chapters. The author, Mary Kirchoff, describes objects in the story very well, which makes the readers imagine the world better. The characters' feelings are all very different, not just one or two similar characters.

Overall, I thought this was a very well-written book for starting Dragonlance readers and the experienced one.

Great Story !
When I read this book I had no idea about fantasy , but I easily understood the whole story. ( about magic and everything.. ) Ýt was a great beginning to read other fantasy books.. The story was fascinating and VERY captivating , I hardly could leave it and spend time with my friends until the next day I finished it ! I highly recommend it to everyone !

I love this book.
"I am currently reading Mary Ellen's new book, "Expect Miracles," and must express my overwhelming gratitude for what this kind of book adds to all of our lives.

I read one or two "miracle" stories each morning to begin my meditation and prayer time, and usually end up starting this period of my day with tears running down my cheeks... which even as a male I lovingly admit!

Discovering how other people are helping one another or have discovered angelic help in their lives is a great way to start the day.

This book will make a perfect gift for all your friends, whether or not this is a critical time in their lives, or just as an added gift because you love them so much... either way, its message will be well received, I guarantee it, and more than likely passed on to other people in their lives as each day passes.

And hopefully, they too will buy extra copies and send them to their friends. I give this little jewel a 5 star rating (out of a possible high of 5). Share it with all those you love!

with peace, love and joy,

Dick Sedona, AZ

A beautiful book you will want to give to all your friends!
This is a magical little book that will lift your heart, increase your faith and nourish your soul. Its about miracles happening to everyday people, and this special book reminds us that our guardian angels are always there when we need them. Mary Ellen shares some beautiful, inspiring, true stories that teach us to have faith not fear, for we truly can expect miracles, when we need them the most.

The Best Christmas Present
Hi I am the Author of the Best Christmas Present story, that was published in Expect Miracles. This story was picked up by the Paxton television network and aired December 16 and December 19, 1999. I have up until now, avoided talking to people about my miracle, but after it was published in our hometown newspaper and a short interview on a local radio staion before it aired on television,I do not avoid it anymore, it has changed my life in alot of ways. People I had thought would find it unbelievable have approached me and told me of their own miracles, this has shown me it pays to be open about such experiences. It is a very moving and learning experience . The stories in the book have helped a lot of people and now I have a lot of friends who want the book, and relatives who bought and gave the book as Christmas gifts this year. I really owe Mary Ellen a debt of gratitude for helping me realize what I had was a gift to me. Thanks

For the sins of my father
Great Book! Keep's you reading until it's done. I had seen the review put out by "Concerned Citizen" and had to laugh. Does he think the writer of the "Murder Machine" had all the right answers to all that went on with Roy DeMeo? I guess no-one person has all the answers but I am open minded enough to hear all the perspectives. Albert had first hand knowledge of the events and was trying to write a human interest story and not a crime novel. Did Al get rich off the blood money? could have, but no amount of money will bring back a lost parent, fix a failed marriage or give back the years he has lost to depression. Read this book, it will give anyone more humility.

I couldn't put it down--the story rings true to me.
I couldn't put this book down as I rooted for Al all the way through. However, I think this book will be much more appreciated if you read MURDER MACHINE first. Al DeMeo describes his childhood as the only son of a high ranking mobster, and the double life he led as a kid at school and a wiseguy in training. I admire him for surviving all he describes and becoming a man of whom his father surely would have been proud. I wish him every success and happiness.

The ignoble consequences of Roy DeMeo's sins
Al DeMeo's 'For the Sins of My Father' offers the other side of Roy DeMeo as portrayed in the book 'Murder Machine'. Young DeMeo describes in vivid detail growing up in adulation of his father, gradually facing the reality of life in the Mafia but never quite coming to terms with the extent of his father's sins. It's understandable why Al doesn't believe the accounts of his father's bloody butchery in the 'Murder Machine', considering that he grew up seeing the fatherly side of Roy DeMeo and was never subject to his father's blood-curdling brutality. Al's account of his life growing up as the son of one of Mafia's most notorious killers is sometimes heart warming, usually sad, and always suspenseful. All in all, this book is well worth the read. It is different than any other 'Mafia' book; Al was not only the son of a vicious killer but a victim of his father's deeds. For greater effect, I recommend reading 'Murder Machine' before reading this book. Good luck to you Al DeMeo.

I LOVED this book!
This book has been a favorite of mine ever since the first time I read it. I read it all I can and lend it to ALL of my friends. There is so much to learn from this book, not only do you learn about horses and methods of training them, but you also learn about the human nature. You have Ken, the boy that only wanted one thing, a colt, but could not have one because of his forgetfullness. You've got Rob McLaughlin, a soldier boy who expects his boys to be army boys too. You've got Nell, the well-doer in this book, with a soft, kind heart.

The Best Book in the Universe!
I have to admit, when I first saw this book, I saw a big thick book. But then I read it , and now it is my favorite book! I loved how they gave such a description that you felt like you were there. I could realy relate to Ken, and how he stuck to what he did and was nervous about it. I liked how the love of Flicka stayed with Ken even when she was in pain. This is such a good book I recomend it to anyone!!!!

A Really Great Book!
This is one of my favorite books ever!!! I could identify with Ken, being a daydreamer and a horse lover too. I get in trouble for forgetting things all the time, so I really understood how he felt. The way he loved Flicka, and wouldn't let his father sell her off with all the other of the Albino's offspring really moved me, and the way he cared for her and loved her the whole time, even when she was afraid of him. I've read this several times and I know I'll read it again. I just started The Red Pony and i still like My Friend Flicka MUCH more!!! I would recommend this to anyone!!!
