A different view the second, and third time around
Nearly 40 years ago, as a 15 year old girl, I took this book from my parent's bookcase on a cold, Sunday in March. I held out little hope because it was my mother's book, but I was bored and had run out of library books. From the opening page I was enthralled. I read all afternoon and into the evening. The love story of Kathy and Mike appealed to my young, romantic heart. But as I moved into the middle of the book, I missed the romance and found it less exciting. Their married life was not as romantic as their courtship. I read it again twenty years later and saw a different book, one about a maturing marriage and the problems it faced. It seemed much more relevant as a 35 year old mother. I read it again a couple years ago and saw even more in the story; it became a much richer novel each time I read it.

This book was a wise purchase by my mother in 1947 for it has continued to live, and grow. As a girl it was a love story, 40 years later it is the portrait of a marriage. I found a copy in a used book, just like my mother's. I will read it again.

Reminding us of cherished values of another era ...
Mrs. Mike is a surprisingly contemporary story whose main character is a strong female. I think it was written about 40 years ago, so parts of it are a bit dated (and perhaps politically incorrect by today's standards). However, it is a wonderful, tender love story set against the background of the extreme and brutal climate and geography of the Canadian northwest. It is the story of a young Irish girl from Boston who falls in love with a Royal Canadian Mounted Policeman. The young husband, a strong male character, adores his wife and treats her accordingly. The book also depicts Indians (now called First Nation people in Candada) in a wonderful fashion, as well as strong and deep friendships among the women. This book should be required reading for young people, especially in a time when bonds between people are easily shattered and hardship is looked on as something to be avoided at all cost. Our book group loved it and read it based upon the memory of one of our members who read it as a very young woman and always treasured it in her heart.

A story that only improves with time.
I read this book several times as a young teen over 20 years ago, and remembered it as one of the best books I had ever read. Recently I picked it up again to see if the story was as interesting to me as an adult as it was when I was a girl. I discovered that my own experiences as a grown woman gave the story much richer meaning for me. The book not only held up, it was even better.

Mrs. Mike is the story of a young innocent girl who falls in love with man and follows him to the remote Canadian wilderness . It is packed with scenes so vivid and real I could remember them perfectly for 20 years. The romance and adventure called to me as a teenager; the friendships, love and loss call to me as an adult.

I cannot reccomend this book highly enough.--Erin Smit

A vivid and imaginative world that you won't want to leave
I am just now finishing this book and am so sad that it is ending. The characters are thoroughly unique, the story exciting, romantic and thought-provoking. What interests me as well, is the history behind this imaginative story - to think that many of the events portrayed really happened, and that the fragile, beautiful world portrayed is now gone forever. Even though the time the story takes place was long ago, the struggles the characters face are relevant today - after all, like the main character, Ash, people still struggle to answer "What is fairness?", "What is my history?", "Where do I belong?", "how do I go my own way, love whomever I love, and truly be myself when others around me don't want me to?" Even though this book seemed large at first, I don't want it to end and wish it could go on and on.

A masterpiece!
I first read this book when I was about 14. It is truly one of the most unforgettable pieces of literature I have ever come across. It made me fall in love with India. It is, without a doubt, my favorite book. I have recommended it to friends many times. It will appeal to someone who loves romance novels, or action-adventure, or exotic locations. M.M.Kaye has managed to put so much of the essence of what India really was into this book that it transports you back in time to the days when she was an untamed creature fighting against British imperialism.

The colors of love and death have never been so vibrant.
The Far Pavilions is not a fairy tale. Too many people die for it to be called that. But if you have ever believed in a love that conquers all, and a life of glossy glamour, with the exotic backdrop of silks and snakes, you have to read this book. Kaye has a talent for bringing you close enough to the main character that you can feel the heat of an Indian summer, and the sting of the cold wind in the Himalyan mountains. I read this book when I was eleven, and in the seven years that followed I collected a copy of every fictitious book she wrote. I searched many different countries, all around the world, and they were worth it, because no matter how many times you read it, the magic in any one of M.M.Kaye's books never fades away. And The Far Pavilions is her best work.

THE MERLIN TRILOGY--MARY STEWART
This series chronicles the adventures of Merlin--from birth to death. Born a bastard prince, young Myrddin Emrys rides his trusty horse around the countryside. He meets an old man named Galapas, near a sacred spring and a crystal cave. He becomes his teacher and makes young Myrddin become the powerful mage Merlin...

This book was great. It was one of the first novels to be written from Merlin's point of view. There was only one downfall: the last part went really slow. Mary Stewary did write a companion novel to this series, "The Wicked Day" (from the point-of-view of Mordred, Arthur's bastard son with his half-sister), but it seemed like she tried too hard. Don't read it unless you're a die-hard Arthurian Legend or Mary Stewart fan.

Realistic, yet enchanting
The story of Merlin has always intrigued me. Yet I have found the various books and movies distasteful. They portray Merlin in ways that do not jive with my inner sense of what might have been real. Mary Stewart, on the other hand, has portrayed a real individual in her books. A boy, Myrddin Emrys, who grows up spending a great deal of time alone, exploring and thinking. He is then believable as an adult because the magic he practices is ensconced in political wisdom, the beliefs of the people, strategic thinking, and the type of shamanic power that no doubt exists in the world. When the Merlin stood on a hillside overlooking Arthur's troops entering battle, of course they won. They won because they knew they would. Amazingly simple. Was it wizardry or was it the power of belief? Or both? I was permanently affected by this book. I named my son Emrys. I came to believe that the king's merlin no doubt existed, much as political advisors exist today. It is the realistic portrayal of this very important historical character that no one else has managed to conjure in quite so convincing a way.

Fantasy weaved with factual history
I came across the Crystal Cave as a freshman and couldn't "get into it" although fascinated with the Merlin legend. I picked it up again at the age of 30 and was transported to Wales where Myrrdin Emrys (Merlin) was born. A story of a King's love for another man's wife, a man's love for a boy more his own son than his nephew. Mary Stewart taught me more about Britian and Wales in these 4 novels than I have learned from all else in total. I loved it, and re-read each book about every 3 years.

Essential Companion For Die Hard MSTies.
This episode guide is a very informative, entertaining and supurbly thorough compaanion to the long-running cult favorite "Mystery Science Theater 3000".It keeps in the spirit of the show, retaining the laconic, surreal sence of humor, and inimitable knack for the obscure reference. You get a comprehensive show-by-show guide of the first six (out of ten) seasons with a description of the film they're scewering, plus a run-down of the bits in between the commercials, sidebars with descriptions of the monsters, mutants, and atrocious actors featured in each episode, plus a sly recap and reflection. Also, you get detailed background info on the stars and nimble minds behiond the show, and the robot puppeteers who bring(Ro-bot roll-call...!)Gypsy,Tom Servo, and Crow to life.If you're a geek about this show(like me),or just curious, this is the best book about MST3K out there.

This is an extremely funny, must-have for MST3K fans.
This book chronicles six of the years of Mystery Science Theater 3000 episodes on Comedy Central, through the eyes of the show's writers. There's tons of information on such classics as "Manos: The Hands of Fate" and "Mitchell", as well as extra features no MSTie could live without. Unfortunately, with the show now in its ninth season, the book is somewhat outdated.

Hilarious summaries of hilarious shows.
First off, I would like to say that MST3K was the most brilliant, hilarious and creative show ever produced. They were snubbed by TV Guide in their top 50 shows of all time article.
Now on to the book:
This book has summaries and memories of all the episodes form seasons 1 though 6, the hayday of the show. The summaries of the films themselves rival the actual show for laughter value. Whether the synopsis was written by Mike (who I think is one of the funniest writers on the planet), Trace, Mary Jo, Kevin or Paul, they will make you heave with gutteral belly laughs. The memories of each episode are also very funny, and beyond that, pretty informative.
The book also features a ton of other things, such as the story behind the creation of the series, answers to the top 50 questions asked, the making of the MST3K movie and much, much more.
The only complaint I have about this book is that it only goes up to season 6. Although I think the show never regained the edge and hilarity of the the Comdey Central era shows (specifically seasons 4-7), I would still love to have a companion volume that takes care of seasons 7-10 and the movie.

I highly recommend this book for all MSTies out there.

Simply Irresistable!
Scribbler of Dreams is an awesome page turner and I simply could not put it down. It is about two related families (The Malones and the Crutchfields), that hate one another with a passion. Out of money because of her family's refusal to sell land, Kaitlin Malone, along with her sister Abby, must leave Holy Trinity, a private school, and start her senior year at Twin Oaks High. Kait's life is turned upside down because she must start her last year of high school at a new school, which just happens to be on Crutchfield land. Then Kaitlin meets young Bram Crutchfield, a compassionate artist that wins her heart. In order to protect thier love, Kait tells one lie after another and is enrolled at Twin Oaks as Kaitlin Hampton. Soon, Kait is caught up in a web of deciet, that threatens to destroy everything she knows and values.
This book is awesome! I fell completely in love with Kaitlin and Bram, and their love for one another was amazing! What I loved about this novel most is how it showed things from Kait's journal, her writing was fantastic. Everyone will love Scribbler of Dreams, I swear on that!

Fantastic love story!!
I just finished reading this book and it was simply fabulous! I read this 223 page novel within 3 days, so you can tell that I just couldn't put it down! A modern Romeo and Juliet story, 17-year-old Kaitlin gets caught up in a web of lies, while trying out secrets to her family's past. Read the book to find out what I mean! I would definetly reccommmend this book to anyone who loves a love story, that's not you're average love story, if you know what I mean. I LOVE THIS BOOK! ;) LOL

this is the best book i have ever read in my entirer life!!
I recomend this book for people over 11 years of age. I have read over about 250 books in my life and this one wins my vote by a mile! Pearson's writing is fabulous and has a certain-deep-touch to it. 17-year-old Kait (Kaitland) has fallen in love with her familys absolute enemies. Her father had killed a Cruthfeild. Their emenies father. She wants to hide that she is a Malone (her last name), but she wants to keep loyal to her family, land, but most of all...Bram. The moment she saw him she knew there was a bond between them. He knew, too. She lies and tells him her mother's maiden name, but will Bram find out the truth?? Can Kaitland bury the truth forever? Will there love for one another stay strong if one finds out about the other's past? FIND OUT!! I just can not emphasize how much I loved this book. Bram sounds so loving, the kisses he gives, to the way he holds Kait. And even the way they sit silently and draw/write together. I just LOVE it and can nt stop thinking about it. I read it in one day because it was simply immpossible for me to put it down. This book made me cry, flinch, and be a little bit jealous, and a very important lesson. This book was just absolutely may FAVEORITE book and was soooooooooo TERRIFIC!!!!!!!!!

Absolutely wonderful!!
I love alll of the Anne of Green Gables series. They are so vividly written you find yourself wishing that you were born as Anne a hundered years ago on PE Island. I would have happily endured all her hardships for all the wonderful moments in her life, and the fact she married Gilbert Blythe! It's so well written that you actually feel that you know Gilbert and I actually found my self falling in love with him! I've read the series 2 times. The first time I couldn't stop thinking about Anne. I read Anne, I tried to live like Anne and I dreamt Anne. Anyway, although I love all 8 books almost equally Anne of the Island is just a little better. And although it's romantic it's definitely not just a romance. Anne of the island includes wit and humour that makes it an all-round perfect book. If you're an Anne fan you havvvvvve to read this. I could not describe how wonderful it is in 1000 words. Anne of the Island is truly a book you CANNOT put down. After reading this I recommend you read all the rest of the Anne of Green Gables series (there are 5 more book,) although you'll probably be rushing to buy them anyway.

The Best there is!
If you like the Anne of Green Gables series this is the best one in the whole thing! Anne of the Island has something for everyone! Anne Shirley leaves the small town of Avonlea to attend Redmond collage.. There the novel introduces you to a character who is extremely funny named Pricella! (Hope I spelled her name right). In this novel Anne falls in love with a fellow school mate, while her long time friend Gilbert Blythe finds a love interest as well! Do they end up together at last? Read the book and find out! This book is definatly for people who liked the movie "Anne of Avonlea". They are without a doubt slightly similar, but the book is definatly better!

I lOVED this book, it's so beautiful and perfect!
I think that this is my favorite Anne book. I have read it over a hundred times to myself and soon I will need to order a new copy. It tells the ongoing story of Anne Shirley and chronicles her adventures in higher education, friendship, love, and of course WRITING! This is not a childrens' book as some might think. It is very easy to read, but it is for people of all ages. Of course, it features the same Gilbert Blythe who we all know and love as Anne's constant admirer and the irredeemably Sloanish Charlie. She also has Priscilla Grant at her side. She also makes a new friend, Phillippa Gordon, who makes Anne's freshman year wonderful and may someday prove to be quite sensible. In the course of the book, Anne will gain friends and admirers as well as continue to matchmake and write (of Course). She will have her share of joy, tears, loss, and love and ultimately set her course for her life beyond the bend in the road. I learned an important life lesson from this book, you never value what you have until you have lost it. I loved the characterization of all the new characters especially Phillipa, I think that we all know someone like her who attracts men without knowing how or wanting to. I can relate to Anne in this book. This book is thoroughly enjoyable and you not regret reading it. If you still want more Anne after reading this book, you should read all of the other Anne books (the next is Anne of Windy Poplars) and the Chronicles of Avonlea(it includes several stories which include Anne in them: The Hurring of Ludovic, The Winning of Lucinda, etc.) I hope that you will love it as much as I did!

The Greatest of all Books
A true love story! Once you start reading this book, you never want to put it down. It's about a girl named Lauren and a guy named Spencer. When he shares them with Lauren, she becomes worried about him. Spencer becomes part of Lauren's life again because she is the only one he can trust. Lauren thinks all is going well until something happens to Spencer! Read this book to find out exactly what happens to Spencer and how Lauren learns to deal with everything.

The Wind Blows Backwards blew me away
The Wind Blows Backwards is one of the most powerful and influencial books that I have ever read. Though at first glance it might be confused with a pathetic teen romance, the book is the home to many deep, raw truths to which countless teens will relate. I found this book as a freshman in high school, and I have faithfully read it at least once a year since then. I would HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who appreciates love and a terrific read!

Finally, a teen novel with depth
Some teen love stories are sappy and full of fluff, but this one was as realistic as anything I've ever read. These characters are deep, they have problems, they aren't perfect. It's a true slice of life. Lauren and Spencer's love is so real, you can feel it as you read. In the end, it is clear how much they truly love each other. Read this book if you're sick of dumbed-down, shallow books about teenagers.

This book saved my life
I first heard of Mary Shomon through her excellent web site on hypothyroidism. Once I discovered that she had written this book, I promptly ordered it and read it from cover to cover. This book literally saved my life. Throughout my life, I have been ultrasensitive to hormonal changes and have suffered from a pituitary tumor. After my daughter was born, I was not the same person. My post-partum depression lasted a year and was coupled with other physical symptoms I could not explain. My primary care doctor was sympathetic and ran bunches of tests but they yielded nothing. Meanwhile, I got sicker and sicker with no hope in sight. Then I found and read this book. All of my symptoms were listed as hypothyroid symptoms. I had numerous risk factors for thyroid disease. I even found my specialist through this book and Mary's web site.

This book is a total eye-opener. Mary is a passionate advocate for patients everywhere who have lost hope. Her writing is clear and concise and explains complex information in a simple way. Not many writers can do that. In fact, this book is so good that I have recommended it to numerous friends of mine who also have thyroid problems. Even hyperthyroid patients should read it because they could end up hypothyroid.

Read it and then read it again. All medical books should have Mary Shomon at the helm. The world would be a much better place for it.

Finally! Someone tells it like it REALLY is!
Mary Shomon's book is the first I have read (out of a LOT of books) that tells the whole truth about hypothyroidism, as experienced by a patient who has been there. I wish that every doctor that treats thyroid patients could be made to read this! So many doctors seem to think that hypo is a simple, easily treated disease, and it isn't. They also tend to focus on individual symptoms without looking for the overall CAUSE. If I had had this book years ago it would have saved me several years of suffering and being told there was nothing wrong with me. Mary's list of symptoms is very thorough, her book is easy to read and understand, and it tells the real truth. I especially like the way she pays attention to the emotional impact of this disease and the depression that often accompanies it. Her weblinks are very helpful in finding out more information. This book is EXCELLENT, and a great resource. It can literally change people's lives. I could barely put it down once I started reading. I can't recommend it enough, especially for newly diagnosed patients or those who SUSPECT they are hypo but haven't been able to find a doctor to test them. Mary's list of symptoms is great to take to your doctor to help them see the overall picture, and her compassion and understanding are very comforting and empowering for patients. She makes sense out of what to most of us is a very confusing disease. If you only buy one book on this subject, make it this one!

Hope for People Who are Told Their Thyroid is Normal
This is the most comprehensive, well researched, and best written book on this subject. The author is not a doctor but is so thoroughly informed on this subject through her own exhaustive research as well as through her collaboration and consultaton with recognized experts in many health disciplines including the medical field. She is someone who has suffered with hypothyroidism and has made it her mission to help others. I am an RN and I have read many other books on this subject and she is more thorough and professional in her approach than I've seen in most other books on the topic.

The author is refreshingly unbiased for the most part and readily admits where she may be biased due to her own personal experience. Even then, she writes with an open mind for the reader's sake to provide sound information so they can make intelligent choices. Her intention is clearly to help people understand the many ways this disease presents itself as well as to help people find appropriate treatment. She provides about 30 pages of resource material at the end of the book including web sites etc. literally leaving no stone unturned. If you have symptoms including fatigue, depression, digestive problems, weight gain, high cholesterol, fertility problems, low blood pressure, low body temperature, and brain fog to name a few, this may be important information to look at. Or if you have been tested for low thyroid and have been dismissed by medical professionals who say your thyroid is "in the normal range" but you know there is something wrong, buy this book! You may discover real help for the first time.

A great captive story
Standing in the Light was a wonderful Dear America book, and one I could read over and over.

It tells, in diary form, about 13 year old Caty Logan who is growing up in her Quaker village in the 1760's. She is perfectly happy, with boys, learning housewifery, and schoolwork to keep her busy - but that all changes one day when she and her younger brother are captured by Lenape Indians.

At first Caty is desperate: she hates living with the rough Indians, who watch her diary writing curiously and force her to follow their Indian ways. But later, she learns that they are good people, though different than the Quakers, and she begins to make friends - and loved ones.

This was a great book! You really care about what will happen, if Caty will stay with them or return to her village. It was sad, but I love it!

I'd recommend this for ages 10 - 14, and I'd recommend some other captive stories: Trouble's Daughter, I Am Regina, Indian Captive, and Calico Captive.

Standing in the Light- A Review
The book called Standing in the Light by Mary Pope Osborne is a very good book. It is written in diary form. The story takes place in Delaware Valley, Pennsylvania in 1763. The main characters are Catharine Logan and her little brother, Thomas Logan. In Standing in the Light, Catharine realizes that she likes a guy who she's known for a long time. Later she finds out that there are Indiansnear where she lives that have beencapturing and killing people. One day when she and her brother were walking to school they get captured by Indians. They separated Catharine from Thomas. In Catharine's camp she meetsan Indian boy named Wine-lo-wich, which means Snow Hunter, who was also captured by Indians when he was young. Catharine laterrealizes that she loves Snow Hunter. Soon after that Snow Hunter disappearsafter he goes on a hunting trip. If you want to find out what happened to Snow Hunter and if Catharine and Thomas ever get home, you'll have to read Standing in the Light by Mary Pope Osborne. I thought that it was a wonderful book.

Not Just for Kids!!!
If you love history read The Dear America Series. "Standing in the light" is one of my favorites. It provides a glimpse into two cultures-Caucasian and Native American. It also tells what occurs when these cultures have contact with one another. There is much tension and heartache that occurs when Catherine Carey Logan is kidnapped by the Delaware. The family bonds and love between Catherine, her brother and the Delaware are even more remarkable. This story is a beautiful one, and these books are not just for kids. I am a 35 year old grad student and love them!! Also recommended for adults and older kids that enjoy this book "The White" by Deborah Larsen
