Great Class!
If you want to make the big bucks sueing the deep pockets because there are a lot of stupid people in this country then this is the book and class for you! However, if you subscribe to the outmoded idea that personal responsibility for you actions is a value worth having then I would skip this subject.

A wealth of biographical information
In The Esoteric World Of Madame Blavatsky: Insights Into The Life Of A Modern Sphinx, Daniel Caldwell has collected a wealth of biographical information on one of the most influential metaphysical thinkers and writers of her day. Arranged in chronological order, we are treated to Madame Blavatsky's travels beginning in Russia and spanning the entire world including her years in New York, and sojourns to London, Bombay, Allahabad, Sri Lanka, Lahore, Adyar, France, Germany, and Italy. A "must" for students of Madame Blavatsky's writings and metaphysics, Caldwell's informative text is wonderfully enhanced with a number of illustrations and photographs.

The Best One Volume Overview of Mme. Blavatsky's Life
Here for the first time is the story of H. P. Blavatsky's life in the words of her contemporaries. Although not a biography per se, this collection tells the story of Madame Blavatsky's eventful career with a special look at the "Esoteric World" in which she lived. These reminiscences by her relatives, acquaintances, friends, co-workers, critics and enemies allow the reader to enter into the historical milieu of HPB's time and give a vivid portrayal of Madame Blavatsky's personality. The narratives are arranged in chronological order and include (1) striking word portraits of HPB; (2) reminiscences giving insight into HPB's enigmatic character; (3) incidents that are sometimes humorous and witty; (4) accounts of psychic phenomena performed by Madame Blavatsky; and (5) descriptions of encounters with HPB's Masters. These personal reminiscences of HPB by more than seventy of her contemporaries give a vivid portrayal of one of the most extraordinary and controversial figures of modern times. Here is a sourcebook of rare original material on HPB illustrated with forty-four photographs and drawings.

Best textbook I have read
I was not very enthusiastic about taking a Sociology course. As I started reading this text I began developing a more informed view of the world we live in and how it works. The book is certainly a masterpiece that tackles issues of global relevance in an objective way. I would recommend anyone to buy this book and teachers to use it as their text.

Review by a friend of Perloff and Baron
This book is one of a kind. It outlines various types of problems, including past failures, and then proceeds to explain how to work a problem, or in the case of failures they describe what went wrong and how the problem might have been prevented.

All geotechnical engineers should have a copy in their library.

Wow! This book is FUN. Great photos. History comes alive.
We picked up this book onboard the SS Independence in Hawaii. Hey, Wow! This book is FUN. It makes history so alive and relevant. Both my husband and I related to aspects of this story. The photographs of Grace Kelly are charming and romantic, while the politics of the period involved in getting the ships built are eye-opening. What an incredible feat of engineering to construct something of this size! The Henry Dreyfuss personal anecdotes hightlight the designer's process. There are many touching, personal stories from people who rode the boat or worked on it. Great period photos. Down to earth writing. Makes me wonder about the photographs that were not selected for this book! Thanks to the authors! A book I keep coming back to and enjoying over and over.

Great book merging "Quality Management" with ORG development
This is one of the finest books written on Quality managment principles and how those principles should be integrated with traditional Organizational Development. Written in an acedemic fashion it provides great depth, excellent case studies, unique models and outstanding survey's included at the end of each chapter.

A must read for those working on their masters in Organizational Development or studying for the ASQ Quality Manager Certification.

I have read hundreds of ORG leadership and Quality Management books and this ranks right near the top!

I highly recommend it.

Excellent reading, short stories on military leadership.
Another excellent book by Sir William Slim (check out Defeat Into Victory). This is a series of short stories drawn from Slim's own experience. Well written and interesting this book works well on many levels. The stories are great by themselves. They offer a fascinating view into some less well know campaigns. Each story has buried in it a valuable lesson in leadership. Should be included in any discussion on leadership (at least it should if it were in print).

This text has become an essential counseling theory work.
Corey's text is an essential text for those wishing to enter the counseling/therapy field. It is well-written, easily accepted by students, and covers the most important psychological theories in mental health. There has been an expansion of the family therapies chapter and chapters on ethics and counselor characteristics are outstanding. This book is used throughout Counselor Education and Mental Health training. I recommend it highly as the best overview for beginning and graduate students in the helping field.

Get this too if you get the text
This Student Manual accompanies the Theory and Practice of Counseling and Psychotherapy text and covers: Practice, Ethics, Psychoanalytic, Adlerian, Existential, Person-Centered, Gestalt, Reality, Behavior, Cognitive-Behavior, and Family Systems Therapy.

The Student Manual has some of the hands on tests, assessment forms, ethics codes etc. that I wish had been put in the text. Also, the text is so dense and meaty that the questions and definitions in the text are almost essential if you are being tested on this material. The chapters follow along with the book. Each chapter starts with a pretest in which you discover your agreement with the concepts presented (e.g. if you answer yes to all the TF questions in the Behavioral chapter, then this theory fits your style well.) Some of these pretests are inventory surveys that you are supposed to use as a basis of discussion -- I find this stuff highly subjective and useless - but then again I am an engineer and like to know how to actually DO things.

In each of the chapters you get:

1) Initial attitude questionaire that also acts as a list of underlying assumptions for the school of therapy being discussed

2) 3 or 4 page review of the chapter

3) definitions of important terms

4) Questions, Cases, Activities for use in class that would be fine if the prof were there guiding a discussion but are without feedback for the solitary reader.

5) A quiz on the chapter with answer key in back of book.

Chapters with more supplemental material in addition to 1-5 listed above:

Chapter 2: Useless surveys re your attitudes. A "Quick Discrimination Index" which is designed to "assess sensitivity ...to cultural diversity and gender equity" which should have been entitled "Find out how politically correct you are". Apparently, I am discriminatory because I think it is more inportant for moms to be with babies in the first year (when men can breastfeed, I'll change my answer!) This stuff was all fairly worthless.

Chapter 3: Good stuff: sample therapist-client contract, ACA Code of Ethis, APA Code of Conduct.

Chap 5: Blank Lifestyle Assessment Questionaire (for use with clients) with filled out form for "Stan".

Chap 6: Existential Activities

Chap 7: Practice sheet for reflecting feelings

Chap 8: Gestalt exercises

Chap 9: Reprint of the Cycle of managing, supervising, counseling and coaching using reality therapy

Chap 10: Sample worksheet on translating broad goals into specific goals, worksheet on how to be concrete, relaxation exercise

Chap 11: Questionaire for discovering underlying issues ("shoulds" "oughts") REBT Self-Help Form

Chap 12: One of Sitir's exercises to see where you are transfering people from your past onto people in your present. Questions useful for eliciting info on Family Systems from client.

A great book detailing counseling perspectives
Corey does a wonderful job detailing several perspectives of psychotherapy: psychoanalytic, Adlerian, existential, person-centered, Gestalt, reality, behavioristic, cognitive-behavioristic, systemic, and an integrational perspective. This book is "heady" at points, but it does offer valuable insight into the field of therapy. This book is a must-read for beginners in the field. Another plus is the mention of existential thought as field of psychotherapeutic thought. Some texts do not include this important school. The text is neatly organized into standard sections. The only drawback is the lack of color and variety.
