MUST HAVE!!!
I really enjoyed reading this book. It was used for a sociology class taken at BYU. Going into the course I thought it was going to be extremely boring but I found myself reading it as if it were a novel! This book is very thought provoking and knee jerking, forcing you to take a look at your views and perceptions and how they got to be that way. I would recommend this book to all because it can only help you to be a better person. I wish this were a requirement for high school students, it would definately help them to understand our world and how they fit into it!!!

One of the best social problems textbook around!
James Henslin's Social Problems is an excellent textbook for students who want to learn more about social problems in the U.S. Henslin divided his book into three parts. First, an overview of the problem. Henslin used the three major sociological theories: symbolic interactionism, functionalism, and conflict theory to interpret the significance of the problem. He used all of the theories without any biases favoring one theory over another. Second,he summarized what social researchers have found about the problem. Finally, he outline possible social policy for it, including making his own recommendation about how to solve it. Those who are tired of reading other social problems book who found that the book' content are depressing and the authors are pessimistic about the problem he/she cover should read Henslin's book. His coverage of the problems, from crime to America's health crisis, from racism to income inequality, from population explotion to war, are excellent and his recommendations on how to solve this problems makes sense and largely optimistic. My professor used Henslin's text for his social problems class and I think his choice is an excelent choice. I highly recommend this book for students and professors who want to learn and explore the social problems in our society

Absolutely essential
I'll make this short...For anyone interested in Chinese history, literature, or culture, this volume is an absolutely essential collection of primary sources, and includes prefaces and explanations by China scholars. There is no one better than de Bary, and this new edition includes everything from the 1960 edition up through the Jiang Zemin era.

all the classics and essentials
I've read a little of this and that about Chinese history and religion, and I needed a book to fill in the basics and the details. This was perfect.

First, the selections included excerpts of almost everything I'd ever heard of: Shang Oracle Bones, the Analects of Confucius and the Confucian classics including the I Ching; Mozi; the Tao Te Ching; Zhuangzi (who famously dreamed that he was a butterfly); Mencius; Xunzi; the Zuozhuan; Sun Tzu's art of war; all kinds of stuff about Chinese schools of Buddhism including the Lotus Sutra and the Flower Garden Sutra and the history of Guanyin and Wutai Shan; Li Po (Li Bo) and Tu Fu (Du Fu); and neo-Confucianism (which was so influential in Korea). In short, this is really, practically the "Eatern Canon" and the selections are deserving of such a label. I was in turns morally and intellectually challenged, uplifted, informed and surprised; but rarely bored and never disappointed.

Second, the introductory essays were exactly what I wanted to know: who might have written it, and when, and who read, and what it meant to them. For all that information, they were still brief and the bibliography was sufficient to help me chase the points that left me curious. An important thing these essays did was to cover the political, historical and social backgrounds (and foregrounds) of the texts, so I learned about Chinese history as well as literature and religion. If that is what you want to do, this book will serve you well.

The binding is excellent, and while the price might look steep I have to say it's a bargain considering what you get.

I didn't read Volume Two, and so I don't know if it is as good. It is certainly a lot smaller!

An impressively updated, indispensable reference.
This second edition of a classic provides an update on a reference recommended for college-level collections specializing in Chinese literature. Sources of Chinese Tradition has been recognized already as a scholarly staple: in its new form Sources of Chinese Tradition has been extended to include the Deng Xiaoping and Jiang Zemin eras of China and includes invaluable source readings on history and literature of the times, from the 18th-century Qing civilization onward.

you think you are crazy --but you are not
Every woman knows the phenomenon--you scream at your kids, you fight with your husband, you eat potato chips by the bag, everything your boss says makes you see red--what is going on????

You go for professional help and the nice shrink says "Here, take these pills for depression or these tranquillizers." And, sure enough, two weeks later you feel great and believe the shrink is a miracle worker. But guess what--it's just your menstural cycle. You're going to be screaming at your kids and fighting with your husband all over again in a few days if you don't read this book and find out what you really need to do is to get on top of your hormones. The way it's explained here, it's not that hard. You need to watch your diet, especially caffeine, alcohol and sugars (the things we automatically turn to!); you need to see a doctor for natural (not synthetic)hormone replacements in some cases; but most of all you need to understand that while you are trying to get on with your life, your body has its own agenda. This book is packed with useful information and is upbeat and easy to read. In short, it's a lifesaver, whether you are a teenager just starting your menstrual cycle or a middle-aged lady still going through the motions.

A REAL LIFE SAVER!
This book helped save my sanity. It is concise and tells you everything you need to know to get real relief once & for all.

"W.A.C. Bennett is dead, long live W.A.C. Bennett"
This ia a truly masterful work on a person British Columbians recently selected as their person of the century.

Mitchell has done a top notch job in recounting the life and times of W.A.C., using the medium of a biography to relate the growth and development of a region. This is even more remarkable given the disfavour that biographies of white, male politicians have fallen into in the past few decades as a historical means of recounting the past.

Mitchell relies heavily on personal interviews he conducted with Bennett in the last years of his life, along with those of the many individuals involved with this first Socred regime. The only fault I can personally site with this book is that it might be too sympathetic, a point Mitchell even alludes too!

There is not much that this book misses out on. It starts literally at the beginning with W.A.C.'s start in New Brunswick, the move to Alberta and the starting of the first hradware strore, and then the final move to the Okanagan where Bennett was to become involved in politics, leading a rather obscure existence (with a few failures along the way) before he finally bolted from the coalition government to start Social Credit in the early 1950s - a move which was decidely different than the grassroots movement of Social Credit in Alberta. Social Credit in B.C. would always be a top-down movement.

Regardless, this is an excellent piece of work and does much to shed some light on the political history of a province whose historiography has been woefully inadaquete in this area.

The indispensible history of Bennett and his province
With the ascention of the technocrat Bill Bennett to the premier's office, one may indeed wonder if the age of populism in B.C. and across Canada is over. David Mitchell provides a masterful picture of one of Canada's great politicans; a man in the exclusive company of past politicans like Bill Aberhart, Diefenbaker, Mitch Hepburn, and Joey Smallwood. The difference between Bennett and these others is the amount of success in their political careers. Mitchell also guides readers through the time of expansion, "The Rise of BC," accomplishments that were largly due to the efforts of it's premier. Mitchell states that when Bennett finally passed away in 1978, BC was, for the first time in a quarter of a century, on it's own. He's right. BC has always lacked strong premiers to lead the province since Bennett. The book is a beautiful journey through Bennett's life, his times, and the province he moulded in his image. Anyone wishing to understand BC politics and BC in general need to first understand the man who defined both, and Mitchell does an exceptionally good job of doing so.

Unlocking the Language
This book provides the reader/actor with a combination that unlocks the Bard's English. It focuses on how the Elizabethan schoolboy was trained in the subject of "loudspeaking," and thus, how theatrical speech was understood in Renaissance England. By revealing the underlying rhetorical structure to Shakespeare's schoolboy training, it leads the actor down the corridors of figures of speech, the powers of persuasion, and the passion and rhythm inherant in the language. It draws clear connections between Shakepeare's lines and rhetoric primers of the 1560's. ACTING SHAKEPEARE provides chapters on specific forms of figures of speech, tropes and figures of sentence, speaking the "score" of the poetry, and bringing it into the body. The book is a clever tool to help the American actor pass from the unknown to the familiar simply, easily and logically. It is not the only such tool, but it is perhaps one of the very best. I have found it especially useful for actors just beginning their work on verse plays. Because it teaches skills learned by Elizabethan primary-school-aged youth, I have felt comfortable using it for actors as young as 7th grade, and no less effectively with experienced adult actors. The process has been remarkably rewarding and successful.

Great Coffee table reading and conversation!
This is interesting reading and brings back a lot of memories from historical political events and causes. This book is a must have for collectors and political activist. As a collector of gay political buttons, all of the pictures and references were of interest to me. I appreciated most being able to look up the value of the buttons that I have been saving through the past several years. It is a fun book to read!

A book worth your money
"Anna's Gift" is a great historical fiction book. I loved it death. The characters are real people, and you can relate to them. The plot is believable and it takes real events from Church history. I laughed, I cried, I cheered, and I can bet you will too. This book is usually for younger readers, but anyone at any age, especially girls, will find a place for this book (and others in the series) in their heart. I guarantee that this book is worth your money.

Good reference with case studies
Hi! I have this book and think that it is a very very good book and very atualized about architetural acoustics because it brings not only the principles of acoustics but a lot of case studies of some famous places with ilustrations, wich are a good reference of the aplication of the design for a acoustical place. And brings too a section about the recent innovations in acoustical design and research. This book and David Egan's Architectural Acoustics makes a perfect couple for architects and other people who wants a good knowledge about acoustics in architecture. I really recommend.

The only first person account of basketball's start
A Canadian by birth, Naismith, a physician and minister with additional degrees in education and psychology, also invented the football helmet and taught sex education. Naismith never made any money from the game he invented. In fact, he refused fees when he spoke about basketball in public, and he once turned down a substantial sum to endorse cigarettes. Amos Alonzo Stagg, a YMCA facility member and a player in the first basketball games, recommended Naismith to start a basketball program at the University of Kansas. He took the job, which he held from 1898 until his death in 1939, though he coached basketball for only nine years. The inventor of the game is the only coach in University of Kansas history with a losing record: 53 wins and 55 losses. An amazing man and a wonderful look at his YMCA invention: basketball

Non-fiction doesn¿t get more exciting than this!
Anyone standing at the Fishermen's Memorial along Gloucester Harbor in Massachusetts will be struck by two things. First, visitors always gravitate to the names at the very end--the familiar names of Capt. Billy Tyne and his five crewmates from the Andrea Gail, lost in The Perfect Storm in 1991. But those who linger are always astonished by the fact that there are more than five thousand other names here--sometimes hundreds of them lost during a single year in the 1800's, often from the same families. This book brings those 19th century years to life, providing a lively glimpse of the Gloucester fishing industry during its height, and a fitting memorial to all those "who go down to the sea in ships."

Joseph Garland reveals this history through the tale of one man--Giant Jim Pattillo, probably the most colorful and independent captain ever to command a Gloucester fishing vessel. A Novie who became a "whitewashed Yankee" when he became a U.S. citizen, Pattillo sailed between Georges Bank, Nova Scotia, and Cape Ann, Massachusetts, during the glory years of 1820 - 1870. Huge in size, immensely strong, and willing to take on anyone when he'd had enough to drink, Pattillo was a brawler who feared nothing and no one, a man who was willing to break the rules and even smuggle when it suited his purpose. Defying storms and all manner of danger, he also defied the restrictions the Crown placed on fishing around Nova Scotia--along with all the Crown's officers and enforcers.

Owner and master of his first fishing vessel in 1820, when he was just fourteen, Pattillo later fished for halibut, mackerel, herring, and cod in pinkeys, smacks, barks, sharpshooters, and schooners, all sailing vessels operating without any supplementary power. Navigation was challenging, to say the least, especially during ferocious storms at night, and the long list of names on the Gloucester memorial attests to the difficulty of keeping these vessels intact during the terrible Atlantic winters. Communication was almost non-existent, and on one occasion, when Pattillo and his crew returned to Gloucester in May, the town was stunned--it had already mourned their deaths, thinking they, like dozens of others, had perished in February.

Garland's impeccably researched tale is a can't-put-it-downer which deserves much more publicity! It's not an exaggeration to say that the insights you gain here about fishing and fishermen will forever change your perceptions of this heroic profession. Through Jim Pattillo, whose career spanned fifty tumultuous years, Garland provides a comprehensive historical account of the Gloucester - Nova Scotia fishing fleet, giving a context to more modern stories, such as The Perfect Storm, often thought to be unique. As a result, these modern accounts may now rightly assume their place as part of Gloucester's centuries-old, seafaring history, their crews members of the more than 5300-man fraternity of those "who go down to the sea in ships."
