The Pre-Golden Age Returns... kind of
During the big explosion in popularity of science fiction during the early 1950s, August Derleth edited several science fiction anthologies. Here, found in his files, is the final, hitherto-unpublished anthology that he assembled. The stories collected range in original magazine publication date from roughly 1915 to 1945, with the emphasis on the earlier dates. Authors include such stalwarts as Murray Leinster, David H. Keller, Stanton Coblentz, and A. Hyatt Verril. The best stories are in the general Gernsback-magazine genre of "inventions gone awry," by a couple of obscure authors I had never encountered before.

I found the introductions and comments by someone named Wrzos fairly annoying. Because he doesn't write in complete sentences. Like this. Makes the reader breathless. You know?

This final Derlethian netful of pre-Golden-Age science fiction certainly merited publication and I read it in one sitting.

Brennan: Enemy of Liberty
Brennan acted with breathtaking intellectual arrogance and contempt for the American people. Most of his "achievements" have already been exposed as failures -- affirmative action (government-sponsored racial discrimination), supression of religous expression (I'm an agnostic, by the way, but I don't enjoy the Court's meddling with expressions of religious views) and the famous Roe vs. Wade decision which, by imposing a "solution" that should have been debated by society, created one of the most destructive and polarizing arguments of recent times and may ultimately lead to more restrictions on abortion than would have otherwise been imposed. As one who favors choice, I would have preferred to have had the opportunity to persuade my fellow Americans, rather than having the outcome dictated by an arrogant, Napoleonic pipsqueak who lingered among us far too long. Deep
This book is a disturbing look into a deeply troubled mind. Unfortunately that is all I can say about William Morain. The fact that a man with a Phd has the nerve to wright what is clearly an attempt at psychological slander is amazing. If you truely want to find out FACTS about Joseph Smith and the Mormon religion, then check out some books that wouldn't be displayed at the local Moromon linching. However, if you just want a good "Bash The Mormons" book then you have a winner.

More about Morian than about Joseph Smith
I give the book two stars because the work does demonstrate some portion of creativity.

But about Joseph Smith and his remarkable work, I expected much more analysis. Smith, with no formal education, wrote a book in his early 20s that millions two centuries later revere as others do the Bible or the Koran. He singlehandedly conceived, designed, initiated, recruited leadership for, and wrote policies and standards for a whole new religion with few subsequent changes that has florished for two centuries and seems destined in this century to become the third largest Christian religion in North America(after Catholics and Baptists). Great leaders such as Brigham Young, Sidney Rigdon, and intellectuals like Eliza R. Snow and John Taylor looked up to him and revered him. He may yet be widely regarded as the most influential man of his time.

To write Smith and the Book of Mormon off as shallow and simply a result of an excrutiating childhood trauma seems itself shallow and may reveal Morian's own psychological expession of self hatred. Marian's roots trace back to Smith, at least indirectly, as a multigenerational decendent of a splinter group founded by Joseph Smith's wife and son.

Smith's childhood trauma was important and no doubt did influence his subsequent psyche and behavior to some extent but it seems downright goofy to suppose that it defined his whole life or explained his extraordinary capability. Smith is one of the few young people in history to create a whole new philosophy, let alone one that has moved millions for centuries. Marian does little or nothing to explain the psycholgical underpinnings of how the man was able to do that. Rather he says the Book of Mormon is shallow and that Smith's work was driven by the horror from a sharp blade and his resonses and family relationships associated with that experience.

Marian may have a valid point about the trauma, but, like the people who think birth order explains everything, this is WAY overblown! Its worth a page, not a book!

Highly speculative
This is a quick and easy read, perfect for after dinner reading. The argument intriguing, but one shouldn't take it so seriously. It's best to read this book with the same healthy skepticism one would bring to a "JFK assassination conspiracy" book. The author is simply connecting dots in Joseph Smith's life to construct his theory that Smith had a personality disorder, and that this disorder was the essence of his religious genius. The book's critical flaw is methodological: Morain never really compares Smith with other case studies from the literature on dissociative disorders, rendering his conclusions pure speculation. Still, Morain scores a few interesting points, and made me say "hmmmmmmmm" more than once. Five stars for readability. Three stars for scholarship. That's an average of 4.

Would be great if it were true...
Mr. Burr brings up some great points. Unfortunatly, many of the "contradictions" he lists are not contradictions at all. For example, one "contradiction" Burr lists in his book involves the genealogies of Christ. In the New Testament, there are two genealogies of Christ. One is in the book of Matthew, chapter 1, and another in the book of Luke, chapter 3. If you look at them, they look completely different. They don't even agree on Jesus' grandfather. The fact is, however, that these lists are not contradictory, but instead complementary. The genealogy in Matthew is Joseph's family line, while the one in Luke is Mary's.

There are many cases like these. The he doesn't back up his claims...

Interesting discussion points
This book is basically a laundry list of contradicitons in the bible. I like the book, and thought it would make for a very good conversation starter the next time a religious group knocked on your door, but I really wish the author would have backed up the contradictions with some discussion and historical perspective.

Still Controversial 150 Years Later
An amazing little book, still raising eyebrows and upsetting fundamentalists 150 years after its publication. While the author is not a scholar and never claims to be, he offers a number of cases where the bible might contradict itself. No attempt is made to put things in context, or to put a spin on them. Just verse for verse contradictions. The Preface is an eye opener, and I have to say this little volume has aged very well. Thought provoking for those who can't be spoon fed their faith.

Chicken Little would agree - Be VERY Worried!!!
I spent good money on this book and several hours reading it. Better I had done anything else. The author claims that very low levels of radiation cause almost anything bad. If it is bad, then radiation caused it. Natural radiation that nature exposes us to all the time? Why no. Every bad thing is caused by radiation from bomb testing and reactors. The author claims that these evil technologies cause a long laundry list of evils.

His statistics could have just as easily shown that the various problems supposed to be caused by radiation in the past 50 years (WW 2 to now) could have been caused by the increased used of home air conditioners, fast food joints, TV dinners or any host of other things that have entered society in the last 50 years.

This book is bogus science. It seems designed to continue our current plague of radiophobia.

A Must-read for Thoughtful Citizens
This is a fascinating statistical analysis of cancer-clusters and other immune deficiency problems linked to low-level radiation exposure from nuclear power plants and the testing of nuclear weapons. It raises important questions regarding public health which are all too seldom addressed anywhere. The authors' conclusions are a wake-up call for concerned citizens to begin challenging corporate and governmental silence surrounding the real/potential dangers of the nuclear power/weapons industries. A controversial, but important read!

What the government doesn't want you to know about Nukes
In a followup to his 1991 book _Deadly Deceit_, Gould issues a devestating indictment of the nuclear power industry. Using his irreproachable statistical expertise (in over 30 years, he's never lost a court case in which he's appeared as an expert statistical witness), Gould shows the direct correlation between deadly diseases and living downwind from nuclear reactors. Why does the U.S. government no longer release the data showing the amount of radiation released from Nukes? Because they don't want you to know that Nukes never have been and never will be safe. Instead, they are exposing U.S. citizens to deadly toxins that kill them or make them more susceptible to cancers and autoimmune diseases. For anyone who wants the irrefutable evidence supporting these claims, this is a book you must read.

Worst Java Book I've ever read.
This is the worst java book I've ever read. The book is unorganized and the content is not suitable for the beginner at all.

The companion CD-ROM is useless.

If the authors would like to publish the new version for JDK 1.2, there will be a lot of works they need to get accomplished.

Simple words from me.... Don't buy this book.

Not the best Java book on the market
Covers alot of fancy staff but has a great lack of contents. It seems like the author has rushed through the book just to fill it out with the Java 1.1 features and forgot to describe the import basics behind the language. There's now way you're gonna be a Java guru by reading this book!

genial
It is very thorough. Almost everything important about java is in there including JDBC, JNI, Java Beans, Servlets, security management, even the specification of the virtual machine and most is explained well understandble. It is the best java book I ever saw!

stay away
I really hate to say it , but this book is just not worth 1/20th of any other major respiratory care book (for example Egan's fundamentals of RC or Dean Hess et al, RC: principles and practice) I feel bad saying it since I know how much hard work it takes to get a book to be printed. The whole design, bad fonts, cheap paper, and organization of the book is really bad. You could gather 2 or 3 chapters that are decent, but we all know that for the book to be successful it must have at least 3/4 of its material acceptable to read and enjoy. I doubt this book will make it into 2nd ed.
