a complex work, very interesting
For a long time I've been trying to find out just what it is that makes a film a film and this book helped me out considerably. The book pinpoints a few of the elusive traits of the cinema and explains how they are used in combination to produce all the cinematic subtleties. In each chapter it has shot by shot analysis of a scene demonstrating a particular structure and it's full of diagrams and charts which help explain it's ideas. It has been a great help for me in both watching and constructing films.

Be warned, you'll need all your concentration to get through this one. It is intense.

Important New Book in Distributed Systems Development
This book covers an area of increasing importance, ie the design and implementation of modern distributed object systems. It combines details of the technologies, eg. CORBA and COM, with design notations and issues, eg. UML and scalability. As such, it fills a very important gap in the market and deserves to be successful. I know of no other book that tackes these issues in the same coherent manner.

I have been teaching these topics for the last three years on undergraduate and postgraduate courses, and have had to use a variety of different literature resouces. This book now provides me with an excellent core text - well written and presented, with good explanations of complex issues.

Many thanks, Wolfgang. I can thoroughly recommend this book to teachers and researchers in this area.

Erasmus
Published in Textbook Binding by West Richard (1934)
Author: Stefan Zweig
Amazon base price: $35.00
Used price: $20.00
Average review score:

Correct appreciation.
In this short book, Zweig sketches an impressive portrait of Erasmus as a private and a public person.
Erasmus was an erudite humanist, but a loner (his motto: nulli concedo,...per se).
He should be considered as the first European and a real pacifist ( for him, all conflicts should be solved by negotiation). But he was in no way a proponent of democracy, more a supporter of an oligarchic rule.
His biggest failure was that he couldn't prevent the schism between Catholics and Protestants, although he played a crucial role in the negotiations. The Elector of Saxony, who protected Maarten Luther, asked him his opinion on the latter. But he couldn't give him a clearcut answer.
Erasmus went a long way: "I am against the truth, if it causes dissension".
He was too honest. He grasped that the compulsory selling of indulgences by the Pope was an unforgivable extortion.
In this short text, Zweig tells us the ultimate tragedy of Erasmus' life: on the one hand, his belief in civilization and the power of reason; on the other hand, a world full of dissensions and war.
Zweig writes in an enthusiastic style, full of drama and contrasts.
A simple, but masterful psychological and historical analysis.

Excellent - A Must-Read!
Lucid, sparkling, and multi-faceted, this book is a gem of high quality. Unlike other research-oriented books on social anxiety and social phobia, this one provides diverse conceptual perspectives from various scientific disciplines and deftly integrates their findings, data, consensus and controversies into a relevatory whole. This resource is for professionals and nonprofessionals alike who want to get outside the box to get a fuller understanding of the complexity and uniqueness of the phenomena of social anxiety and social phobia. Destined to be a classic, this book would be a significant addition to any psychology library. I enthusiastically recommend it!

I love this little book
Ok, I admit I am only an amature, and a week-end one at that, but gardening is my passion. All winter long I drool over gardening books until the weather warms up enough to go out and dig in the dirt. Laying in bed at night, my mind is moving perennials and planting annuals. I have been known to call into work with mysterious aliments on bright sunny days where the cure unfailingly is digging up a new flower bed. Well, these are my qualifications for making a review of The Gardner's Handbook. I have found it to be extremely through, well thought out and easy to interpret. It is my very favorite gardening book. There are others that are certainly more detailed, but no one has covered as much ground in so small a volume as Mr. Buczacki. And the nice handy size of the book is also a plus! This is a good housewarming gift to folks who are first-time yard owners, as well. Happy gardening.

Wonderful Cultural Book
This is a folktale of a young girl Jehan, who lives in Baghdad. One morning she wakes to find out she has lost her smile. She searches for it all over the world, only to find it was hidden in her own home all along she just had to uncover it. She finds the more she smiles the easier it is and the entire community shares her smile. The moral is to find the hidden beauty in life that is often right in front of us. This is a great book that incorporates the culture of Baghdad, culture all over the world, and has a great moral to it. This is delightful book and I highly recommend it.

God Shock

Truly Cool
God Shock is one of the most original, gripping, and often hysterically funny pieces of cyberpunk I've ever read. I became emotionally attached to the protagonists, and had to read the book again to try and quell that sense of loss when I'd finished the book.

The most prominent aspect of God Shock, though, is the rich texture of ideas. Rochfort has packed an impressive mass of speculative science into God Shock, and from the vantage point of my own Neuroscience r&d, it's obvious Rochfort has invested huge time and effort into the authenticity of God Shock's technology.

Comprehensive Manual
Awesome! It practically covers everything to know about beach volleyball. It is of great value to anyone interested in the sport. It gives a good account of how the sport developed in Europe and USA. A good structural analysis of the game covers a chapter. It is a treasury of techniques, tactics and forms of training. All aspects of training like strategy, skills, speed, strength and conditioning are covered. It is well written and well supplemented with illustrations and color photos. This book is most probably the ultimate Coaches, athlete's and enthusiast's manual. The quality of the book material and the photos are an added bonus.I highly recommend it.

A brave and clever hen must outsmart a coyote
Huevos Rancheros: A Mexican Tale is written and illustrated by Stefan Czernecki. Here is the folklore story of a Mexican trickster, the tale of a brave and clever hen who must outsmart a coyote through charm and good cooking. Boldly colored illustrations bring this vivid children's story into sharp relief, and the last page offers an easy-to-follow recipe for young people who want to make and try Huevos Rancheros. Also highly recommended for school and library collections is Stefan Czernecki's previous folklore-based picturebook for young readers, Mama God, Papa God: A Caribbean Tale (1566563070, $15.95).

Great book for everybody (about Russian edition).
Everybody who has some interest to mathematics can understand this remarkable book. I was 17 when I read it first time. Now I have PhD in mathematics and often use examples from the book for my students and my children. Some things seem to be impossible (the curve covering a square, ...) but after reading this book one can feel it, not only understand.
