Inspector Ghote on an American excursion!
Nirmala Shahani, only daughter of an Indian magnate, has dropped out of the California college where her wealthy father has sent her to put the cap on her education before her marriage to the sone of his business partner. The private eye engaged by the anxious Mr. Shahani has reported that she's living in an ashram near Los Angeles. Her father already knows that she's cleaned out her bank account! So Inspector Ghote finds himself in Beverly Hills trying to persuade her to return with him to Bombay, and with the help of Fred Hoskins, a beefy ex-cop - attempting to prove that the Swami With No Name is a confidence trickster instead of an Indian holy man. But Ghote is faced with a puzzle to rival the legendary rope tricks of his native bazaars: how a man could be killed and the murder weapon be made to vanish in a windowless room whose only exit was watched...by the good Inspector himself!

Glorious
An excellent intro to Faulkner. Beautifully written and one of his most accessible works. See the "Long Hot Summer" with Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward which is a filmisation of a novella of the same name in 'The Hamlet'. Great stuff!

The best that mystery has to offer
Monsignor Steven Gray asks his old childhood friend, former FBI psychological profiler, Robert Payne to investigate the murder of Father Daly. Robert, who now works as an investigator for a Cedar Rapids, Iowa law firm, does not want to get involved with what looks to him like an internal church affair. However, for old time sakes, he agrees to look into this and a similar grisly murder of a priest.

Among Daly's possessions are a series of articles about the brutal killings of members of St. Mallory Church. From these clippings and other information, Robert develops a profile on a vicious serial killer. As he gets closer to identifying the culprit, Robert knows he must pick up the pace before another parishioner becomes the next brutalized victim.

HARLOT'S MOON, the latest Robert Payne novel (see HAWK MOON and BLOOD MOON), is a tremendous hard-boiled detective story, starring a great protagonist. When it comes to crime, Robert is as tough as they get, but Ed Gorman makes his star profiler seem human because he provides him with compassionate traits too. Throw in a well-designed fast-paced story line and a strong support cast that constantly move the plot forward and the audience has a top rate psychological who-done-it.

The Hitchhiker's Quartet

The purist edition!
This omnibus publishing of the Hitchhikers Quartet contains the first four books of the Hitchhikers Trilogy, considered the only true Trilogy by many purists. The series starts with the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, then continues with The Restaurant at the End of the Universe, Life, the Universe and Everything and rounds out with So Long and Thanks For All the Fish. This is considered me many the core of the Guide's story, and that "Mostly harmless" takes the story in an unwanted direction and prematurely ends the series with the elimination of 3 of the main characters. Most hardcore Adams purists prefer to leave the story hanging with the possibility of the infinite possibilities possible in an infinite universe.

Van de Wetering's strongest dose of Zen Buddhism yet.
Van de Wetering continues his search for the true meaning of being and nothingness. The commissaris and Sergeant de Gier travel to New York to investigate the death of an uncle of a member of the Amsterdam Police Reserve. Throughout the course of their investigation, the Dutch detectives continue their own personal search for enlightenment. Van de Wetering has a talent for giving his readers more than a casual glimpse of the philosophy of Zen Buddhism, yet he manages to do so without preaching about it. As always, he makes us laugh along the way. This book did not feature as much interaction between Adjutant Gripstra and Sergeant de Gier as some of Van de Wetering's previous efforts, as Gripstra did not travel to Manhattan with his colleagues. The focus in this story was the commissaris, and his attempts to solve both the case, and the meaning of life. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and I am glad that the author has continued this unique mystery series after a long hiatus.

How to Establish and Maintain Service Level Agreements
Published in Paperback by Help Desk Institute (01 January, 1994)

Amazon base price: $9.95

Average review score:

Narrow focus, brief and effective for its stated purpose
Note that this book only addresses SLAs at the help desk level. At less than 40 pages this pamphlet is focused on a narrow topic, but provides sufficient information to get you started on developing and implementing SLAs for help desk operations.

While the brevity of the book may give the impression that it's sketchy or too high level, it does a remarkable job of walking you through the what's, why's and how's of service level agreements and how they can form the foundation of improved operational efficiency and end user satisfaction. More importantly, the book steps you through the entire process of developing the SLA, negotiating objectives and implementing and managing to it.

With respect to the service level objectives that comprise the SLA I strongly recommend that you read "Using Service Goals and Metrics to Improve Help Desk Performance" by Mark W. Ellis (another pamphlet-sized resource) in conjunction with this book. Combined, you'll be able to understand SLAs and the significant metrics associated with help desk operations, which is the first step in the process of developing a more unified service delivery posture. Another book I recommend after you've established SLAs at the help desk level is "IT Problem Management" by Gary S. Walker. That book takes service delivery to the enterprise level.

Best tour of Chicago since Bueller

Psychiatrist Dr. Jack Caleb is jogging in Chicago's Lincoln Park when he hears some chanting. When he goes in the direction of the noise he observes a cultist mob about to burn a police car with the cop inside the vehicle. His presence puts a halt to the festivities and the wannabe arsonists flee the scene. Later on, the officer's partner Arlette Banks is found dead, a victim of a stoning. The Chicago police department assigns John Thinnes to investigate the case, which circumstantially point towards the cult.

However, the case becomes more complicated when members of the cult begin to die in what appears to be a series of arson fires. Soon, evidence surfaces that makes the prime suspect appear to be Dr. Morgan, a close friend of Jack. To prove his buddy, who he wants a closer relationship with, is innocent, Jack sets in motion a plan that, if it fails, will leave him and John burnt to a crisp

The third Thinnes-Caleb investigation, INCENDIARY DESIGNS, is a well-designed tale. The story line is obviously crisp and fast-paced. The secondary characters and the lead duo strengthen the plot. However, what makes Michael Allen Dymmoch's novel so good is the best tour of Chicago since Bueller needed a day off. This is a wonderful series that is worth reading.

What it's all about.
The book does a great job of giving a broad overview of what Young Life is all about. I think every leader, staff member, field staff, etc should take the time to refresh themselves by reading this book. It is proof that no matter how much time changes our society, kids are still kids.
