pretty good detective story
Dead birds is an intriging mystery. the story holds your attention throughout. the end dont come until the very end after jimmy jenner has already given up on the case. thats an interesting twist. the ending is pretty unlikely and a bit farfetched but the story is quite good anyway. jenner is an interesting character. i would recommend this book for mystery or PI fans either one.

Pretty good educational book
My three year old daughter and I had been observing pelicans on our daily walks. I told her I'd find her a book on them so we could learn more about them. I found this one and bought it. She really enjoys it and while much of the tone of it is above the head of a three year old, she still gets a lot out of it and it will -- likely -- have longevity as she gets older and understands more about it.

a realistic look at the days of a prosperous family
The Birds were wealthy and religious and intelligent. They were aware of the larger issues and they were appealing persons. There is sadness in the book's depiction of everyone's losses, including the slaves'. Works well as a much more readable companion piece to the massive book, The Children of Pride.

great book for the new england turkey hunter
I read this book some years ago and found it invaluble to anyone who hunts wild turkey in the new england states. Instead of giving general turkey hunting info or focusing on southern states as many books do, this one tells about tactics for the northeast and gives a lot of historical turkey data for each of the new england states. Unfortunately, I lost my copy a few years back and since I was able to locate it at Amazon.com I will be buying a new one. Mike Koffink

This book is an excellent overview of the birds of Iowa.
The Iowa Breeding Bird Atlas presents the first detailed state-wide survey results for breeding birds. Detailed species accounts are provided for more than 150 birds known to breed in Iowa. These are accompanied by maps showing the distribution of the birds. Several introductory chapters summarize information about the vegetation, geologic origins, and history of the state. Summary statistics include tables showing the most common species, the most frequently confirmed breeding species, and correlations between species groups and the different landforms. The data in this volume includes key information on both common and rare species. This book is an excellent reference for anyone interested in birds or bird atlases. The species accounts are extremely well-written and informative. I highly recommend this book.

Kitchen Table Bird Book
I'm ordering my second copy of this book, this one for my six-year-old grandson. It's a book of birds native to our Michigan area with beautiful illustrations, told in an interesting fashion. He has me read to him from it, and of course always needs to know about the bugs and such that they eat. He'll soon be old enough to read it himself, and likes to try and copy the illustrations. I'd recommend it for adults and kids alike.

Ornithology: An Ecological Approach
Published in Hardcover by Prentice Hall (April, 1988)
Authors: John R. Faaborg, Susan B. Chaplin, and J. E. Spencer
Amazon base price: $75.00
Used price: $23.61
Average review score:

ornithology made simple
Faaborg's textbook for ornithology was published in 1988. It is composed of 16 chapters for a total of 470 pages, and deals with topics from an introductory chapter to conservation and management. A the time of its publication, nothing original had been published since Pettingill's classic ornithology texts (>25 yr old) and it sure was a significant change from the previous approach.

The subtitle of the book, "an ecological approach" informs the reader about the scope of the contents. Although morphological, anatomical, and physiological chapters are included (co-authored by S. Chaplin), these are not the main emphasis of this volume, but a more organismal-to-community ecology type of book, and being Faaborg direct offspring of the MacArthurian paradigm this was expected.

Students using this book in undergraduate ornithology courses will find an easy to digest narrative, abundant and easily understandable figures and tables, and a body of information with direct applications to conservation and management, besides its children-proof binding. When compared to similar recent ornithology books (e.g. F. Gill's) it is pretty obvious the professional ornithologist will chose the more in-depth, recent and abundantly researched volume of the later, but for people looking for an excellent introductory level ornithology textbook the objectives of the author are more than fulfilled.

It is a shame it can be so expensive in the used book market and that the author and publisher haven't put produced a second edition, perhaps with a lower-priced paperback section.
