Analysis of Tonal Music: A Schenkerian Approach

This text is intended for graduate students in music (and perhaps for advanced undergraduates as well). It replaces Allen Forte and Steven Gilbert's Schenker text of ca. 1979 as an authoritative introduction to the themes and tools of Schenker's way of looking at the music of the Western Classical tradition. Long considered a "secret code" impenetrable to outsiders, Schenkerian analysis has at last been accepted as defining the mainstream of music theory in this country, thanks to the widespread availability since the '80s of English translations of his most important books, _Harmonielehre_, _Kontrapunkte_, the _Five Graphic Analyses_, and Schenker's late summary of his techniques and theories, _Der Freie Satz_. Cadwallader and Gagne succeed where Forte and Gilbert failed to find a clear, uncluttered style of presentation and a tone that is suited to the level of preparation one is likely to find among the target student population. A good test of this boo! k's success is that it is _almost_ usable by students with little or no prior specialized background; it succeeds to a remarkable degree in making Schenkerian theory a tool for musicians at large, rather than for specialists. A glossary of specialized terms would have been useful, as well as more extensive treatment of certain topics such as mixture about which Schenker had quite idiosyncratic ideas, but all in all this is a teacher-friendly, student-friendly contribution to the study of music theory which should be known to everyone in the discipline.

It is a perfect book for kids and adults who watch the show.
It is a copy of the first episode of the show "The Journey of Allen Strange." It talks about Allen's arrival to California when he stows away on a Zelon spaceship and is accidently left on Earth, but is cared for and protected by Robbie and Josh Stevenson who try to keep it a secret. A perfect book for kids and adults that are really, really out there!

Not Barney
This is a childrens' book on dinosaurs for those with a serious interest in the subject. It's well-written and informative with excellent illustrations but fairly wordy, not for children under 8. I would especially recommend it for children living in Texas who can connect the book to their surroundings.

Very informative, shows Ike's "Hidden Hand" at work
You need to understand that this is a college text book and as a result, the writing is a little inflated. That being said, the author presents a good premise and makes his case very well, showing how Eisenhower's use of public relations agencies, Robert Montgomery, and others helped the GOP and the President in particular fare very well in the public's eye. The account of how the Presidential news conference was created (to avoid the President's message from being "interpreted" by the reporters or having the press neglect the message the White House wanted to get out) is very informative and something viewers of modern day news conference should keep in mind as well. Good book that also goes a long way in dispelling the notion that Dwight D. Eisenhower was a do-nothing President.

Invest a Little Time in this Book
This hands-on book is for families to use together. It's honest, helpful, and full of good advice to help families get away from the busy-ness that keeps them running from one thing to another. The information on creating a family covenant is quite good, and "connecting points" in each section prompt critical thinking and good discussion. This is a fine book for Christian families to use to help them learn to say no, decide their priorities, and grow closer and healthier together.

This book is a wonderful book to teach children, how to behave and how to respect and apprieciate their elders. After just reading the book once my children were saying "Please","Thank you" and "Your Welcome" all the time. This book is a must have in every household with children.

This book invites young minds to think divergently.
This was a book I used to write notes to my children on their lunch napkins. Every day a riddle, joke or pun was the topic of conversation that evening. Now, I use it when I send email to my granddaughter. A little humor with jokes that do not make fun of anyone, is high on my list of musts. I also teach 6th grade, and they are constantly asking for more puzzles. They have to listen carefully and may have to look at a word or phrase with a different perspective to find the answer. Example: "Wally: Do you know how to play baseball? Sally: Sure I do. Wally: Then tell me how you hold a bat? Sally: By the wings of course."

Mysteries of the Bible Now Revealed
I have read this book from cover-to-cover twice and found that it is a good leaping-off point to do further research on any of the topics covered. Anybody who wants to do more in-depth study or just wants a place to go to to do a Sunday school would do well to purchase and read this book. Since this is a book in the Bible Mystery Series, I can not wait for additional books to be published.
