Martin Luther King by Robert E. Jacoubek and Nancy Shuker
The book Martin Luther King by Robert E. Jacoubek and Nancy Shuker demonstrates the amazing struggle Martin Luther King, Jr. and the black community went through to gain the independence and free will their ethnic group deserves. This book is a very good learning device because within the book there is a leadership essay by Arthur Schlesinger, Jr. which clearly states what leadership is and how it affects the world. This essay helps you understand what America was like during Mr. King's lifetime.

The authors didn't write much about Martin Luther King's personal life. Instead, they talked about what conflicts he faced and what specific important things he accomplished. This way of writing allowed the reader to learn more about his heroic tasks. The authors wrote in a very factual manner. They gave many examples of what Mr. King accomplished by talking about his conflicts and then explaining the resolution he came up with.

The authors also used a story-telling technique in their book. They told most of the story in a "third person" view. To do this, they properly fit many actual quotations from Mr. King's speeches into the story. This way of writing allows the reader to learn more from the story that is told. The following quotation from the book is one example of this story-telling technique: "King told the crowds at that night's mass meeting: 'Now they know that an injunction will not stop us.'"

This book is great for all ages. The way the authors wrote helped me understand what a hero really was and what characteristics Martin Luther King had to produce such an advancement and to make the world more equal. The book makes you think of questions that influence what a hero really is. When I read the book, I thought of questions like: "Do leaders lead by force or by persuasion" By command or consent?" Raising these basic questions makes you think about the passage and what it really means.

I would recommend this wonderful book to everyone. It expressed Mr. King's story in a very logical manner which made it much easier to read. It showed how hard Martin Luther King worked at helping his ethnic group succeed in life with segregation and mistreatment surrounding their lives. The book taught me never to give up, no matter how difficult the task is and some day you will get what you deserve and worked hard for. In the end, after all the crime and mistreatment that had taken place, Martin Luther King finally pursued his dream and his people are set free.

Funny, incisive and revealing. A great boook!
I loved this book and found it a sophisticated journey through Martina's life, even though the title says it's aimed at young adults. (I'm an older adult!) It's the best book written about Martina Navratilova.

A realistic novel, set in 1958
Night Riding is a great book! It is set in the countryside of America, in 1958. The narrator of the story is Prin, an eleven year old girl who lives with her mother and fifteen year old sister. Martin Schonfeld's Valuable Contribution
"The Philosophy of the Young Kant: the Precritical Project," written by Martin Schönfeld (University of South Florida) studies the philosophical development of Kant during the so-called pre-critical years (1746-1766). Attempting to overturn a scholarly tradition of discounting Kant's writing before the publication of the first "Critique" (1781), Schönfeld convincingly argues for the importance of Kant's attempt to integrate the developments of Newtonian science and the traditional values of Western morality and religion during the years under discussion. Martin Schönfeld manages to weave this very diverse and difficult material together with great intellectual rigor.

This book is an outstanding contribution to a somewhat neglected area of Kant scholarship; it will also be of interest to anyone interested in the history of scientific, religious, and moral ideas during the Enlightenment. The author's prose is excellent, and he makes his work accessible to the non-specialized reader by relegating some of the technical and scholarly detail of the book to fifty pages of very interesting notes at the end of the book. "The Philosophy of the Young Kant" contains an outstanding multi-lingual bibliography.

Because of its clarity and critical acumen, "The Philosophy of the Young Kant" will be of interest to both undergraduate and graduate readers in many different disciplines. Reading Dr. Schonfeld's book as a preparation to the "The Critique of Pure Reason" will make access to the notoriously difficult problems and terminology of that book much easier.

Martin Schonfeld's book is a significant contribution to modern intellectual history and cannot be recommended strongly enough.

A hard-hitting, realistic story
Carly Chambers may be a shy, abused child at home - part of a family constantly moving to avoid trouble - but on the boardwalk she has her unusual friends who watch out for her and worry about her. She loves the beach and their new Oceanside coastal home, until her father's activities and the interest of a stranger threatens her new life. In The Secret Within, Theresa Golding has created a hard-hitting, realistic story of a child involved in a destructive pattern of family abuse and illegal activity - and how she survives by building healthier relationships outside the home.

Hands-on History of Electricity
This book presents basic principals of electricity and magnetism in the order in which they were discovered and used. The reader can easily duplicate most of the original experiments (clear instructions given) and retrace the steps of the curious scientists and inventors who first did them. My main complaint about this book is that it ends all too soon. With proper supplies and preparation it can serve as a foundation for a lab class in electricity for 6th grade and up.

Not Just New Spirituality, But New Religion
This book inspired me. Several years ago I lost interest in organized religion. But, I have always remained someone passionately involved in spirituality--deepening my own and helping others to do the same. This inspiring collection of pieces by young (30-somethings)spiritual/religious leaders showed me that religion is worth a second look. Things are changing, it seems! Lama Surya Das says on the back jacket: "Spiritual Manifestos helps us awaken to the fresh breath of new spirituality in our land and our hearts. It is a call to transformation, both personal and communal. Don't miss it!" I agree. (If you still aren't ready to look anew at organized religion, I recommend another book to you: "Who Is My God?")
