Coward's Guide to Body Piercing
Published in Paperback by Boston America Corporation (01 September, 1996)
Authors: Herbert I. Kavet and Martin Riskin
Amazon base price: $5.95

Informative and entertaining
Very humorous book. This book pulls fun at pierced people butin an unoffensive way. Much in the way we would make fun ofourselves. As far as I can tell, the names of the piercings are accurate and humor is a good way to remember them, but the information on what happens when you get pierced is exaggerated for effect.

Black American History: Nat Turner to the Compromise of 1850
"Milestones in Black American History" is a 16-volume exploration of the black experience from ancient Egypt to the present day, with each volume focusing on a specific period of African-American history. "Days of Sorrow, Years of Glory," focuses on the pivotal period between the slave revolt led by Nat Turner in southeastern Virginia in 1813 and the passage of the controversial Fugitive Slave Act by the U.S. Congress as part of the Great Compromise of 1850. Timothy J. Paulson contrasts the story of bondage in slavery for millions of African-Americans with the efforts of free blacks who produced an impressive array of industrial inventions, novels, music, sermons, newspapers, and political oratory. Paulson covers racist violence in the North, the foundation of the American Anti-Slavery Society, the murder of Elijah P. Lovejoy, the black bandmaster Frank Johnson, the Battle of Lockahatchee between the U.S. Army and a black-Seminole army, David Ruggles's first black magazine, the "Amistad" and "Creole" slave ship revolts, and more.

"Days of Sorrow, Years of Glory" goes beyond the most famous names in the struggle of black Americans for liberty (Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth, Frederick Douglass) to tell about Norbert Rillieux, William Henry Lane, and Joseph Cinque. I was pretty well versed in the political side of the story in terms of how the nation got from the Missouri Compromise to the Great Compromise of 1850, but Paulson is focusing more on the social side of the struggle. As a result, it is rather surprising to see how much was happening in Black American History in the years before the decade leading up to the Civil War. This book is illustrated with contemporary etchings, drawings, cartoons, and photographs from the period, including a photograph of the Hanging Tree where Nat Turner was executed, the title page of a book written by Frederick Douglass, and a much-reprinted lithograph entitled "The Old Plantation" showing the South's idealized view of slavery. For classes, students and teachers who want more information about American History from the African-American perspective than they will find in their textbooks, this is an excellent series.

I bought this for both sets of parents!
There are a lot of retirement books out there, so I went with the one with a recognizable name and I'm glad I did. My parents haven't thought enough about retirement and I wanted to spur them to action. They were pleased to find out that there were many things they could do now, even at this late date, to help them, and they even starting giving me tips on ways I could start planning. So then I gave this book to my husband's parents who are already retired, and they ended up buying it for friends too. There are tons of tips, easy things you can do, worksheets, charts, action lists, tips--even a section on how to overcome adverse events like losing your job and divorce. It is worth the read. You'll learn a lot and be happy you did.

Folklore at its best; an unfamiliar version of a classic.
For fans of folklore, this book is a treasure trove. It contains the ancient echoes of the familiar story of Henny Penny or Chicken Little, but with a kinder, more positive ending, in which no animals are eaten by any other animals. The illustrations are vivid and evocative. My favorites are one VERY close-up view of a lion and another of his paws as he stamps the ground. There is also a delightful one of a honey-eating bear staring cross-eyed at some bees. I have used this book for years in my storytelling with young children, particularly when I am leading them to compare different versions of a story. It has also been wonderful as story material for creative dramatics with young children.

A clear-eyed look at the history of the foot soldier
This attractive book is a fascinating look at foot soldiers throughout recorded history. Each of the twelve main chapters looks at a soldier, the battle he fought in, how he was trained and equipped, and what happened to him. The soldiers (who each have their own name and personality) are an Athenian (418 BC), a Roman (44 AD), a Frank (640 AD), a German Crusader (1191), a Longbowman at Agincourt (1415), an English Cavalier (1645), a Prussian (1748), a British veteran of the Napoleonic Wars (1815), a Civil War soldier from Maine (1863), a Hungarian in the French Foreign Legion (1906), British Tommy (1916), and a G.I. in Italy (1944). The two extra chapters are quite short, quickly explaining 1) the evolution of tactics and weapons betweem 1450 and 1550, and 2) the variability of soldiers since 1945.

I must admit that I found this to be quite a fascinating book. First and foremost, the author does an excellent job of explaining what war was like during each of the time periods. Secondly, this book is jam-packed with colorful pictures, which bring the stories to life. Also, if you think that this book is a glorification of war, you are quite wrong. Many of the soldiers are shown as being tired of war or confused, one is maimed, and three die before the end of their story. This book really is a clear-eyed look at the history of the foot soldier.

From Kansas to Cannibals: The Story of Osa Johnson (Avisson Young Adult Series)

The New Woman of the Twentieth Century
Osa Johnson WAS the new woman of the twentieth century. She did not stay home and tend to her husband and raise kids. She tended to her husband while enjoying the adventure he pursued. The twentieth century was a time of change for women in America. This book is a wonderful way of introducing young people to the changes made by this woman for other women of her time. In fact, I think adults would also enjoy reading this as much as I did. It sparked an interest that continues to grow.
