Good overview, a little light on details
Overall, this was a good survey of Mexican history. The writing style was easy to read--not as dense as most history text books-- and was informative on more than just facts. This books covers pre-Colombian history, the Conquest, the fight for independence from Spain, and the evolution (and revolutions) that occured after independence. Also, this book goes into more than just historical fact by expressing ideas that spread through the country, cultural changes, and political trends. This is a great place to start learning about Mexico and, with the recommended reading lists at the end of each chapter, a good reference if a person wants more details on a specific subject covered in the book.

The 6th and 7th Editions are Great
I used this book when i took
my Mexico course at the local
college. The historical literature
is well researched and documented.
This is the best guide if one wants
too know Mexican history. Any one
who says that this book is light, I
suggest you watch the news on the Televisa channel
station or Azteca Television. The literature will
not give you the details of why the economy has failed.

everything is said positive, reserved, and with class.
literature is recommended.

one has to see that mexico is just about the rich vs the poor.
the rich vs the yankees, and the white rich, mestizo rich vs the poor in todays society.

it has been a conquered land, but through revolution and evolution the country has truimphed, work through its leaders.

it was said in the news that the mexicans will not allow the "dollar" control the economy, mexican economy, but the attitude of nationalism is changing for the better in us mexico relations.. . . . .the issue of the european union, the united states of europe is bound to change things soon. . . .

Excellent recommendation!
I grew up in Mexico. For years, the best source on Mexican history was a 4-volume set published by the Colegio de México, the authoritative and ultra-elitist "Mexican Harvard." It was the best because nobody could read it (no one dared criticize this monstrosity)!
The Course of Mexican History is magnificent in contrast. Since I found the fifth edition this year, you can be sure that the authors don't neglect their incredible labor!
I believe the contents and lengths of chapters are well balanced. You probably have to live in the country to understand her history, and you might only get the gist of it.
A truly remarkable find!

Better books out there
I haven't used this book much at all. Books by Joseph Garcia-Prats and Dana Wechsler Linden were much more helpful.

The Best Guide through preemie parenthood
I am both a physician and a mother of a son who arrived 11 weeks early. This book has helped in every facet of my premature parenthood from breastfeeding (or, in my case, my ongoing attempts) to just feeling I was not the only preemie parent out there. In addition, the explanations of the various medical problems premature babies may face are excellent. Truly, a book that every premature parent would benefit from having.

How to Keep Your Sanity During an Especially Tough Situation
Our son was born at 26 weeks (3 months early) and was in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) until one day past his due date. We were given this book after he'd been there one month. Let me tell you what a life-saver it was! We had been given a "crash course" in the care delivered to a premature infant... very scary stuff. Wires, machines, noise, drugs -- and in the middle of it all this unbelievably tiny human being who is your child. This book took much of the fear away and instead educated us. Preemies don't stop being preemies when they come home! This book gives the technical data in an easy to understand format that is not condescending and also focuses on the emotional as well as physical needs of the baby. Additionally, it gives contacts and information on potential problems, how to spot them early, and how to handle them. There is also a good referal list in the back. I would recommend this book not only to preemie parents, but to anyone in contact with a preemie and their family. PS. As of this writing, our son is one year old and doing great!

Hallmark Doesn't Live Here Anymore
If your idea of love is limited to visions of puppies and balloons, The Thing About Love Is... probably not for you. In Polyphony Press' first effort, the heavy topic of love is tackled in gritty, gutsy pieces that cut to core of this complex emotion. Sometimes it's bliss, sometimes it's bizarre, and quite often it hurts, but regardless of its form, love is always intriguing. This anthology is in keeping with that notion. With a variety of styles and voices, the works featured here are unanimous in their ability to draw the reader in and keep him hooked. It is truly a great read that may challenge one's personal definition of love. Call it an enjoyable experiment in mind expansion!

Armed for Battle
It's difficult to find an anthology that has as much stopping power as this one. Reading it, I was impressed not only by the diversity of the authorial voices, but also by their veracity. Each story, poem and play seems to have come straight from the gut. What's more, the contributing writers help to remove our blinders; particularly when it comes to matters of the heart. Love, they argue, is nothing less than a battlefield on which each of us daily chances victory or defeat. Those seeking to enter the contest fully armed would do well to buy this book.

A Good Book To Curl Up With
Anthologies are not my usual choice of reading material, but as this was recommended to me, I decided to give it a try. I was pleasantly surprised. While I could not relate to some of the pieces here, I enjoyed the underlying topic immensely. The poetry, drama, and short stories were a good blend. The Thing About Love Is... an enjoyable and fast read, but has a peculiar lingering effect that required that I return to it for further exploration. It's a perfect book to read from the relative comfort and safety of your best chair, where you know that you can dip into the joy and angst of love and for once, walk away unscathed.

Rock''m Sock'm Boxing Title Match
You didn't expect it but there you are (or someone you know) transported to center ring against your dreaded opponent, 'Cancer'! Luckily, there is someone in your corner who has experience and knowledge to guide you against this towering opponent. The book offers help from Round 1 thru Round 15. The book is realistic, compasionate, and practical. The Buchholz's speak from the heart. They covers topics patients and familes need to know about; treatment options, alternative therapies, clinical trials, emotions, managed healthcare, family dynamics, etc. There are short narratives about real people to bring out important points and pitfalls.

It is hard to give a book of this type 5-Stars because so much of what makes the book a success goes on within the patient or those that relate to the patient. The book itself is a guide, it doesn't give you "The Answer".

Offering hope, meaning for lives of cancer patients
Offering hope, meaning for lives of cancer patients

"LIVE LONGER, LIVE LARGER: A Holistic Approach For Cancer Patients and Families" offers a compassionate approach to cancer patient care that focuses on the whole person, not just the disease. Through their practice, this husband and wife work with each patient to construct a strategy for dealing with life-threatening illness. Reading this book is like having an unhurried consultation with them.
" Live Longer," outlines the strategy as a plan to extend life beyond its current bounds, and aims not only to treat the individual's malady, but also to heighten a patient's quality of life and engender a greater depth of meaning.
For those who have chosen-and Drs. Buchholz assert that there is always choice-to receive a particular treatment for cancer, "Live Longer" provides instruction on how to maintain a willingness to take one step after another even when it is difficult. This includes guidance on the appropriate application of hope, living with uncertainty, coping with changes in body image, and managing one's modes of energy so as to avoid fatigue.
"Live Longer" offers people with cancer a philosophy of how to live their lives fully.

Not just for cancer patients
Something to think about is an exceptional book that has just come out by Drs. Bill and Susie Buchholz, Living Longer, Living Larger. While directed to cancer patients and their families because he is an oncologist, it is well suited to anyone facing life crises that can shorten life. Dealing with fear, medical jargon, and what it means to live a larger life, it meets the reader wherever they are in dealing with a life changing medical
event - diagnosis, choosing treatment, during treatment, remission, recurrence, or endgame.

This one came first!
I've read a lot of the newer, and easy to read Gambling books in the past two years, and being that this is a second edition, I can tell that a lot of other gambling authors have read this one too! This is the real deal, folks, and the simplest, clearest and most enjoyable gambling book for novices and even regular players to learn from. I read it and started winning more. Don't bother with the others. They're just cheaper - and you get what you pay for!

Excellent book for a beginner.
This is the best book on gambling I have read. It is written in simple and easy to understand language. I highly recommend it to anyone wanting to learn more on gambling.

hands-down winner!
This book beats Frank Scoblete's books hands down - because it gives you the facts in a simple, easy to read and understand format. It doesn't promise to make you a big winner like Mr. S does. What a shame, the Idiot's seem to be way more realistic. (B-t-w, Stoker is obviously a plant - go read all the Scoblete reviews. That kind of makes this review stuff a lot of nonsense!) Buy this book and see for yourself how good it is!

perfect for reading on the go
The idea of "the best of the Oxford American" brings out a lot of expectations. This magazine has been the home for a lot of special writing. This book provides some of those moments. I especially enjoyed the narrative of the small town photographer burdened by the unwelcome insights of his coworkers and the blank misunderstandings of his Disney World roadtripping friends. I think that the criticism by Tony Earley would have made just as good an introduction to this book as did Rick Bragg's more metaphorical observation that this writing is "heavy on the salt."
I would recommend this book for anyone that wants to read about the South as it actually is -- unique, history-addled, and genuinely "salty".

Truly the best of the best
This collection of works--fiction, nonfiction, poetry, reportage--by the biggest names writing in or about the South is a real treasure. For those already familiar with "the New Yorker of the South" it will remind those what have made the magazine so special for so many years, and for those who have not discovered the magazine, BOA will be a great introduction to the best in Southern belles lettres. The book, like the magazine itself, is a little trad and not good on commenting on the lives of blacks, gays/lesbians, and immigrants to the South, but there is much for everyone to enjoy here.

Cooking as Courtship: the Strunk & White of Flirt &Dessert
This book is primarily a collection of essays on eating with others and feeding others as a way of communicating care. She, I think correctly, broadly interprets both cooking and courtship. Cooking can be as abstract as getting yourself invited to a meal or making toast and courtship is similarly expanded to include any attempt to bring people closer to you (both with romantic intent and even plain 'ol friendly interest.)

The author is particularly thoughtful and very funny. The book has a great combination of sisterly advice and a clear agenda. She wants the reader to make better, more thoughtful use of the act of feeding others as an opportunity to express care (and desire.)

If you know someone who thought "The Rules" was an evil literary pandemic. Buy them this book. It has no rules but tons of persuasive suggestions and is a funny, sexy read. Think Calvin Trillin meets Dr. Ruth.

Buy this book. Give it to someone or keep it for yourself.
Cooking as Courtship is not about cooking. It is barely about food. It is about living and being with others and being with yourself; it is about respect and flexibility and generosity. It is NOT about the "way to a man's heart". Oh, my no. Maybe it is about the way to a woman's heart. Surely it is the only book about cooking and relationships between people that any non-cook man is going to be able to bear to read. The only one I can think of, anyway.

Ok, it is a little bit about food. But only about food insomuch as food is the context for so much of our interactions with others, and the author seems to genuinely wish for everyone to do better. You know, not insult people accidently and have them leave the table hoping to never sit down with you again to a meal, or deal or anything else. (obviously they won't be crawling into bed with you, or strolling down any aisles, neither supermarket nor ecclesiastical).

There are recipes, and they are excellent and not intimidating. The way you wish your mother cooked. The way someone cooks who is really not so much interested in cooking as in feeding people. Very different agendas, according to the author. But the recipes are really there to illustrate the manner of addressing food and meals described in the rest of the book. As far as the author is concerned, you can go out to dinner, as long as you do it well, which is to say in a manner which makes your companions very happy. Is all this clear? Maybe you DON'T have to read the book.... No, read it anyway. There is a great deal there. I am just mentioning the stuff I remember.

You can read the book either from start to finish, or by opening it up anywhere and reading a bit. You will laugh. You will be struck by the truth of the observations and admissions. You will be embarrassed when you know the book is talking about the likes of you. You will be smug when it is talking about someone whose actions have bothered you and you never quite could articulate why.

Give the book to chefs and cooking afficiandos, and they will be delighted at the camaraderie. Give the book to people who have vowed to never enter a kitchen, and the book will seduce them into thinking maybe it wouldn't be so bad to make some toast and coffee fro friends rather than boring them with a litany of reasons they don't cook.

Read the book for your own entertainment (and education, as there is actually a great deal of information about cooking and other subjects.) Give the book to others and find your social life improves as you are invited to more charming and delicious dinners and lunches than were even before possible.

Read the damn book and share it with others, and in time this lunatic world might soften up and sit down to dine in love and friendship in twos and threes and thirties, and we all will be better off.

fluid shifts
This was a very helpful book on how fluids and electrolytes work in the body

I love this series
I have purchased this series for peds, med surg and fluids & electrolytes and critical care nursing. Without fail other students want these books. Class lecture follows these books nearly verbatim. Thus I can follow along in the book while listening. I don't even need to take seperate notes. Although sometimes I do write notations in the columns when my teacher stresses a particular point. The diskette that comes with the series is the best review that I have found. I am on the Dean's List in part to this series.

Perfect Textbook and Website
I have been teaching Graphic Design for many years and have found that Designing with Type is the perfect textbook. Now with the addition of the website...and its numerous links to design projects from schools around the world, as well as suggestions for books, magazines, organizations, and other web sites, it is a truly unique and invaluable tool for both teachers and students.

New Web Site Too
I have used this book both as a student and now as an instructor of typography and find it to be one of the most valuable resources on the subject. There is also a free new web site that supplements the book. I have found that students benefit greatly from using the book along with the website. I would strongly recommend checking out: ...

Great book
I use this book in a fundamentals class. It has solid exercises and simple, comprehensive info on typography.
