Orson Welles, Shakespeare, and Popular Culture
Published in Hardcover by Columbia University Press (15 January, 1999)
Author: Michael Anderegg
Amazon base price: $49.00
Used price: $39.50
Average review score:

An exceptionally insightful, well-written book
Anyone interested in Shakespeare and Orson Welles will want to buy this extremely useful and unusually thoughtful book. It is quite compact and offers chapters on all of the Shakespeare films Welles made. Anderegg argues tht Welles sought to democratize Shakespeare through the use of mass media such as records, radio, and film. there's a wonderful opening chapter about an I Love Lucy episode with Welles and a stunning conclusion about Welles as a star author (Anderegg contrast him with Bertolt Brecht). The book is very well-written and very accesible. Ideal for classroom use.

Excellent selection of readings
This is one of the best anthologies I've ever found on the issues discussed within Philosophy of Religion. It covers different readings from Saint Teresa of Jesus, St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, up to William Alston, Blaise Pascal, Soren Kierkegaard, C. S. Lwis, John Hick, David Hume, William Rowe among many others. The book selects readings from the following subjects: Religious Experience, Faith and Reason, the attributes of God (the problems of his existence, his omnipotence, his omniscience and its relations with voluntary action, his timelessness, etc), theistic arguments (specially the ontological and cosmological arguments), the problem of evil, knowledge of God, religious language, miracles, among many others. Highly recommended.

One Picasso Exhibition Too Many? NOT!!!
While some art buffs may find it hard to believe that anything new could be said about the unquestionably great and unquestionably over-publicized Pablo Picasso, this Museum of Modern Art catalogue actually manages to re-invigorate the discussion of an artist whom some might say the MOMA (having held four colossal exhibitions on Picasso within 15 years) should stop shoving down the public's throat. While the paintings are, for the most part, quite familiar to Picasso enthusiasts (with some delicious exceptions), the catalogue contains several excellent essays which approach the works of art from a personal, rather than art-historical perspective. Picasso's relationships with his various women, and the effect each wife/mistress had on his vision of reality, are thoughtfully and, for the most part, intelligently explored, despite some occasional descents into blatant "National Enquirer"-type celebrity gossip on the part of these supposedly "scientific" critics. Fortunately, Picasso's art stands above the possibly-too intimate concerns of the authors (a careful perusal of the gossip-filled footnotes will amuse you for hours). Page after page of excellent reproductions stun, startle, amuse and amaze the beholder through their sheer perversity. Nearly 30 years after Picasso's death, his art still shocks and challenges the public. My personal favorites are the paintings of the sad and sensual Dora Maar, which are unmatched anywhere in Picasso's oeuvre for sheer, brutal power. Their distortions haunt the mind, although the joyous and often semi-pornographic pictures of the teenage mistress, Marie-Therese, possess an equal charge. This book is a definite must in any art library.

Simple, powerful, and it works
Are you interested in how any particular decision will turn out? And on knowing the likely outcome, what would you do to influence the decision so it turns out in your favor? These are the two main questions addressed by the book. Most of us have instinctive ways of dealing with them. The authors put order and discipline to instinct, and describe a systematic approach, enriched with guidelines and clever tips. The system works this way: a. Identify the 5 major variables that enter into a decision. These are: the decision statement itself, the players, and each player's position, power and priority. b. Rate each player's position, power, and priority. Position goes from -5 (strongly against the decision) to +5 (strongly for the stated decision). A player's power and priority each go from 1 (very weak power or near indifference) to 5 (strong power or high priority). Each player's power-position-priority score is calculated. The total of "pro" scores over the contribution of all players is evaluated to arrive at a probability value for a "pro" outcome (same reasoning goes for the "anti" outcome). The balance of forces can also be presented graphically. c. Plan a strategy focused on specific variables. Identify those variables which when changed will best change the probability of the outcome. From a description of strategy you will learn in what context you may effectively choose to remove a player (by promoting him/her, for example), or reframe a decision statement, or stall for time, or speed up a decision, among many other strategies. There's a chart near the end of the book to guide your choice of strategies. The scoring system forces you to give a numerical score rather than a verbal description of a variable's importance. The scoring system is not overly complex as to be incomprehensible. The calculations are, in fact, the easiest part of the method. The authors claim from experience --- in consulting with business and government, including the CIA --- that the method estimates outcomes with good confidence. However, accuracy and precision are primarily the result of proper selection of the variables, especially players, and giving a score to power, position, and priority. These two steps --- selection and scoring --- are the most demanding part of power persuasion. (In later books by the same authors the method is called Political Accounting.) The method, however, gives a snapshot of the condition of the balance of forces. The authors discuss how to incorporate estimates of the evolution of this balance. They also discuss how to rate players considered as a group, how to use the method to run meetings, and how to answer objections to the method's use. The method has applications in every field wherever decisions are involved, from the home to entire nations. The authors make this clear, and write in a fitting style. It's a practical book for practical people, not a scholarly work, though its insights on human behavior can surely be discussed in terms of cutting-edge psychological science. I expected the authors to put in a checklist of "interview" or "research" questions summarizing the whole process. I wrote out my own checklist of questions to help me in my intelligence work, and have included questions proper to evaluating psychological profiles (itself important in giving scores). I guess the authors meant their readers to write such checklists suited to their own needs. Power Persuasion is among the 10 most practical professional books I've ever read.

A comprehensive overview
This book provides a comprehensive overview to many topics of interest to anyone interested in schizophrenia. It's well-written by the top people in their fields and is an excellent starting point for medical students or others who want to know what the research into schizophrenia has to say about the influence of medication. The chapter on structural imaging and treatment response in schizophrenia is particularly thought provoking (Crosthwaite & Reveley). It is a bit pricey for only 269 pages but at this size is a perfect primer for further reading.
