When the book started to fall apart, from being thrust into our hands over and over by Alexis, my wife remarked we had better find a replacement fast!
Then a funny thing began happening; she started counting along with the book as it manages to repeat the numbers over and over. Alexis doesn't mind, in fact she is having fun learning. The story line also manages to work in some lessons on teamwork, not giving up, and humor. Can Alexis wait until my package arrives with "pie?" What can we distract her with? "Barney's Book of Hugs" seems to always make her giggle and also gets her wanting to have long big hugs. Maybe I'll be selfish and have Snow White shipped by barge via the Panama Canal, but then if she ever fails a math test I'll feel guilty... Learning should always be this much fun!

I learned 2 "new" moves thanks to this book, and I think, that this is one of the better whitewater kayaking manuals around.
I would recommend it for anyone, who's serious about his/hers stuff, be it squirt- or playboating.
The lingo can be difficult at first, if you are not one of the baptised, but facts are hard nevertheless.
Instruction as a whole makes sense, but sometimes one needs the detailed illustrations, some of which will knot your brains while you try to figure what's going on.
Some of the moves can be hard to understand at first, especially if you're new in the sport, but it's worth it.

In this book, Cliff White meticulously records the entire process -- beginning with Nixon's loss in 1960, and culminating with the GOP National Convention at the Cow Palace in San Francisco. White paints a fascinating picture of how he and an initial group of 33 activists changed America. Goldwater's victory was the beginnings of electoral successes of the modern conservative movement, first Nixon, and then Reagan. White's efforts paved the way for these future victories; the activists who were introduced into politics by the Draft Goldwater movement were the leaders of the 1976 and 1980 Reagan campaigns. The donor mailing list was the seed corn that raised hundreds of millions of dollars for Reagan, for other conservative candidates, and for conservative organizations like the Heritage Foundation. And most importantly, Barry Goldwater himself galvanized an entire generation of conservatives, giving a voice to their beliefs and giving them a reason to get involved.
If you have any interest in political history or the history of the conservative movement, you ought to read this book.

The introduction, entitled "Like No Other House" says it all!The White House is unique: a "private" family home, the hub of our government, a tourist attraction, and a place of ceremony. It has been the scene of some of history's most important events and some of history's most important figures have stayed under its roof.
The White House has survived: from the burning by the British only 14 years after John and Abigail Adams moved in through many periods of neglect and mismanagement.
The book focuses more on personalities than on politics, especially the First ladies, who are given great credit by many of the essayists.
Beginning with John and Abigail Adams' short residency, the first essay follows Abigail on her long journey from Massachusetts to the "marshlands of the Potomac", where she found a barely furnished house with no wood to heat it, an unfinished staircase, and plaster walls that were still damp.
Dolley Madison managed to combine simplicity with high style with the help of architect Benjamin Latrobe. The Madison's tenure was cut short when the British burned the Executive Mansion, as it was called, in 1814.
The house was rebuilt as a national symbol, but by the time the Lincolns moved in over 100 years later, it was a shabby place. The once-elegant public rooms had threadbare rugs, dirty upholstery, faded draperies, and few amenities. Mary Lincoln immediately took upon herself the transformation of the President's house, traveling to New York and Philadelphia during wartime to look for rugs, wallpaper, china, and crystal and having much of the furniture restored. Despite her efforts, during public events, people actually cut off pieces of the wallpaper, rugs, and curtains for souvenirs.
Theodore Roosevelt "remade the presidency and reinvented the White House and his models for both have lasted a century" according to the essayist who wrote the section about him. He changed the name from the Executive Mansion to the White House and added the West Wing for executive offices. Unfortunately, the renovation was finished too fast and was mainly cosmetic. Only 50 years later, a massive structural rebuilding had to be undertaken.
I learned much more about those who have occupied the White House, but will control myself and not go into any more of that here! Believe me, this is a book that you will learn from, even if you think you know American history fairly well.

Like his other classic kayaking books, this is a comic book river guide for the Southeast Rivers. (Rivers included are the Cheat, Chatahoochee, Chatooga, French Broad, Gauley, Haw, Hiawasee, Locust Fork, Nantahala, New River Gorge, Nolichucky, Savage and Youghiogheny.) Paddlers will appreciate the descriptions of the rivers, some b/w photos and the comical sketches of the major rapids of each river. In addition he also includes a funny glossary section of river and paddling terminology with his highly opinionated sociocultural paddling commentary offered throughout.
As paddlesports are becoming increasingly popular and thus "more commercially marketable" in the US, Nealy's books and commentary are becoming even more funny, more meaningful and somewhat prophetic.
