much underated
Mark Rutherford is a much underated British author - his sensitive portrail of women in a time of change - the Victorian era - is very moving - If you like this one read Catherine Furze and search out his other books.

Scholarly, well written and fascinating
This is a companion book to The Songs of Zion, a collection of hymns, gospel and spirituals from the Black Methodist tradition which is used in many United Methodist churches today. It is a very useful and interesting book for anyone who would like to know more about this vital and wonderful music which is uniquely American.

Serious science, with history.
An excellent study of a somewhat ignored area of early photographic practice. The authors are unusually detailed about the science of the process, some of which isn't really understood even today. But the narrative of the personalities involved in the early days is used to great effect throughtout. Daguerreotype isn't really my field, but I'm now fascinated!

Young Hemingway
Hemingway was 20-24 yrs old when he wrote these dispatches for the Toronto newspapers. He already had journalism experience in Kansas City and war experience in Italy. He had experienced his first broken heart. The work is fresh and clean and much of it could be printed in this morning's newspaper and it would be considered good. He covered the day-to-day and also peace conferences in Europe. He later said some of this is "juvenilia" and should not be included in his life's work. The writing is very good even at this young age.

I loved this book
I visited Alcatraz in December 1996, spending Christmas in SF. I was strongly impressed. There, I bought this book and, back to home, I become uncapable to stop reading. This is the true history of a man who played to be rough and independent from society, and payed it very strongly. He spent the most of his life in differente prisons, Alcatraz included, and his way of relating is a extreme and captivating sincerity. I cried in some parts, laughed in others. And admired his capacity to be sincere at the end of his life, sharing every feeling while he was stealing, kidnapping, ecc..., day after day. As you can imagine, he met very interesting personalities and describes them with freshness and authenticity. I loved this book. It is a walk across the 20's, 30's and 40's, above all, and is a vivid, first-hand, portrait of the gangster's universe of those years. Congratulations, Mr. Willians, your history, mistakes, sorrows, bitter discoveries and some happiness have been useful for me and many other people. After so many terribles things, you can be proud of yourself. I am thinking to write to Mr. Willians since I read his book. At last, I did it.
A History of Military Music in America.

Must reading for musicians for early American music
This is an obscure book long out of print which chronicles the history of American Military music from the Revolution up to World War II. It is a very good resource book for band and field music which I was fortunate to find a copy in the University of Connecticut Music Library.

Moving on
I read this book tonight. When you feel you are truly as far down as you can possibly go--this book will let you know that you are not alone. The authors have been there, and every word of the book lets you know that. Very inspirational, motivational.

The title of the book could have been: Read this if you....
Want to know why you are unhappy at work. OBTW this is Richard writing this...I am a Family Physician and I understand family systems. The foundation of the work compares organizational dysfunction to family dysfunction. It is a rational and easy to read book. It helped me understand the dynamics of my workplace and realize I needed to leave my job! Don't get me wrong....this is not the advise of the author. Once understanding the workplace is covered there are survival tips. For me I came to the conclusion there is little chance of recovery for the organization I worked with. A must read book for managers, owners and employees who want to grow and become healthier.

Provocative
This book is very well thought out. The author tries to give an argument about God. The title is a little misleading because of what he addresses. His argument is basically this: If God is omnibenevolent, omnipotent, and all loving, why do black people suffer? I don't want to spoil this book, but if you are reading this review (no matter what race you are), you really should spend the money on this book. It is worth it, I assure you.
