Babara Helen Berger is the greatest sort of artist. Her pictures paint themselves into the reader's imagination. Her words are few, often spare, but they say so much with so little. Combined, they make tales that cut to the soul.

The beauty of "When the Sun Rose" is heart-rending. A friend who arrives in a golden carriage drawn by a Lion that shines like the sun; this Lion of Surpassing Beauty feeds on blueberries and cream; golden roses leaving something of the friend's presence at the end of day. "When the Sun Rose" is beautiful...a wonderful hymn to imagination and all that lies within as well as beyond us.

Love at first sight is the only way that I can describe what I felt when I first opened the pages of this book. My daughter was given it for her second birthday (there is no child too young to enjoy the illustrations) and for her it was love at first sight as well. She turns the pages and says, "beautiful book, beautiful book" over and over again. This is the only book in her extensive collection that she has quite this response to. The illustrations are radiant, magical, mystical, whimsical, richly colorful and have a golden aura of childhood that immediately sweeps me back to when I was a three years old exploring my grandmothers sun splashed garden. The story is a simple one about friendship with the illustrations portraying a world where the sun rose and was a 'rose', where the little girls friend is pulled in a carriage by a golden lion, where they spend a peaceful magical day together painting rainbows and sharing with one another. As the sun sets the magical day must end and the girls part, but there is a promise of togetherness again. The story is gentle and soft and is a wonderful book to read to your child before bed. Sweet dreams are sure to follow. I love this book so much that I did a search by author for all the books by Barbara Helen Berger...and I bought them all. No kidding. I have to say that this author is a gift from heaven for every child.

This is a beautiful book in all respects. Like other Barbara Helen Berger books, it is poignant, lovely and soothing. Ms. Berger is able to capture a wonderful calm that is rare and magical.

I first read this book eighteen years ago and the pilgrim's humble and simple story touched something in my heart. The book was so inspiring that it moved me to begin praying the Jesus Prayer, and the Prayer and the Pilgrim have been my companions in life ever since.

The story takes place in Russia in the nineteenth century. Our pilgrim is a man who has lost his family and his home, is slightly disabled, and who is burning with a passion for God. He hears a sermon on the necessity of constant prayer, and in his eagerness to find out how this is possible, sets out on a journey across Russia to meet with any spiritual advisor who can instruct him. One of these holy fathers introduces him to the Philokalia and the Prayer of the Heart. In passing along the instruction, however, the pilgrim is really teaching us, the readers. This book is filled with sound teaching, but, unlike other books on spirituality/theology, it does not tell us what to do, but rather lets the pilgrim, through narrative and dialogue, tell what he himself did. The instruction unfolds along with the story, touching the reader's heart and soul in the process.

If you read this and would like to pursue the Prayer of the Heart, you might also want to read another very simple book called "Living the Jesus Prayer," by Irma Zaleski. Those two books, plus the Gospel, will get you through your whole life and beyond, and it will be a journey of joy and peace, and a direct experience of Omnipresence.

This book was given to me as a gift many years ago, and has remained a favourite ever since. In the simplest and most humble of styles, the anonymous pilgrem recounts the story of his struggles with prayer: how is he to 'pray continually' in a world of such speed and noise? His journeys and adventures as he learns the life of inner prayer are stunningly beautiful in their presentation, and inspiring to all who read this work. And while "The Way of a Pilgrim" is not an 'instruction manual' on prayer, it cannot help but inspire the prayer-life of its readers. The author's compilation of related materials on the Orthodox "Jesus Prayer," found at the end of the book, are a welcomed addition to a marvelous text.

Each recipe is explained in detail and if an ingredient is uncommon she explains where to get it and what it is. She writes the recipes so that the end result turns out wonderfully. I grew up eating this food in Canton, OH and her recipes taste just the way the old Syrians would have prepared it. I was so happy to find a cookbook so true to the old world style. There are meat recipes as well as vegetable based cuisine, desserts, and even how to make the old Syrian cheese usually served with breakfast. It is a concise, great book and I wish more people knew how to prepare meals like this.

My three year old son has loved this book to be read over and over and over since he was two. The subject, combined with the pictures can help a child develop expressive language. When the fish keeps getting bigger, and the boy goes through all that trouble trying to move his fish, Otto, into bigger and bigger containers, my son's eyes get big and he gasps and looks at me and says "Oh no!"

This is a delightfull tale of a little boy who feeds his fish too much, and the extremly silly, or dire(depending on your age how you see it) consequences. In the end, the pet store owner comes to the rescue after the police and firemen have done thier part to try to help get the fish more comfortable. A good lesson about listening to, and following instructions, and asking for help when you need it is within the story.

We recently got a fish as a pet and my daughter was constantly wanting to feed it. I remembered this book from my childhood and got it to read to my daughter so that she might have an idea (although a little exaggerated) about what happens if you feed a fish too much. She loved the book and asks to read it again and again. And she doesn't ask to feed the fish all the time anymore!

I loved this book as a child and now I'm having a wonderful time reading it with my son. This is a delightful story of a little boy who gets a fish and doesn't listen to Mr. Carp ( the pet shop owner) who tells him how to feed the fish. Of couse the little boy doesn't follow directions and finds out that bad things can happen when you don't follow to directions. Even though this book is over twenty years old the illustrations are not outdated. Great for anyone, but especially for kids who want a pet.

This book was the best of all that I have read of this type. The simple difference between this book and others is that Erin's character was kept intact consistently throughout the book. There was no "cleaning it up" or "sugar-coating". The most natural feeling when you lose a loved-one is to give people only the "PG" version of their life. When this happens, it's hard to see the reality in that person. Cheers to Helen, who had the foresight to keep Erin "real" in order for people to identify with her gripping emotions and life-altering experiences. I could not help but recognize some of my own experiences and feelings with my own mother through both Erin's and Helen's words. How comforting it is to know that there are others who see some of the beauty and excitement during what most people see as "the darkest moments of life". Erin and Helen have done a wonderful job of reaching out and giving people a better understanding of the process of life through death. I encourage everyone I know to read this book (whether they have lost a loved-one or not). It's real and also very thought provoking. Whether you believe in "life after death" or not, Erin's experience will touch your heart, and her courage will give you strength.

From Erin with Love is a book written about a real person with real feelings. Erin is a college student who is diagnosed with a fatal disease. This book, with the help of her journals, recounts the story of how she and her loved ones coped with this horrible twist of fate. The love that people felt for Erin shines through this book and the experience of her family after Erin's death affirms that death is not an end but a beginning... I guarantee that this book with touch you. Not to be missed.

this book From Erin With Love was one of the most emotional books I have ever read. Helen Fisher does an excellent job of being "very down to Earth, describing the cold reality of the medical world, and the very heartwarming , comforting, reality of the fact that there is indeed, a transition from one dimension to another dimension." Sharing her beautiful daughter Erin's journals and poems made me feel like I knew her as a person. Butterflies represent a transition from one life to another life. I highly recommend this book for those who are recently bereaved, and for those who wish to learn more about life after life.

I read this book over 25 yrs ago,living in a small northern Michigan town there were no "prepaired childbirth" classes This was the best information avaible! I had no pain and no fear It was truly a wonderful experience. Even my husband didn't think I was in labor because I didn't act like the women in the movies! My daughters will soon be needing this book and alas I lent my copy to someone and never got it back I hope they will reprint this book and make it avaible to all women so they too may have a wonderfull delivery without drugs!

I read this book already believing that childbirth didn't necessarily have to be the horrible painful experience most people warn you about..and reading this book just confirmed all my beliefs. When I had my first child, my labor from beginning to end was only 3.5 hours, contractions, while powerful, DID NOT HURT, and I pushed only 4 times to give birth to my beautiful healthy daughter, all without medication of any kind. It was a great experience, and I firmly believe that much of the pain people feel is caused by their own fears and their reaction to that fear, ie, tensing up. I recommend this book to everyone I know who is having a baby!

I guess I am the second generation of mothers who have read this book. A friend gave me an old copy 5 years ago before the (natural) birth of my first child, and I read it again last year after the (natural) birth of my second child. It made childbirth a wonderful experience. Now I want to buy a copy of this short paperback that should cost about $10 for my expecting sister, and it's out of print and selling for up to $200?!!?? Publishers, obvously there is a market for this book. Please reprint it!

Little Pilgrim's Progress is an excellent resource for those teaching young children about being a Christian. The book itself is written in plain and easy to understand English. This timeless story is written so that even a child can understand the concepts taught in this book. I have found it very helpful in teaching the Children's Bible Class at my church. The story truly enhances God's Word. It also is a great motivator for children to read.

I read this book in elementary school, and it really is such a phenomanal adaptation of the Pilgrims Progress! I felt like it commuicated the same message very clearly for young minds. I have never forgoten this book and many of it's details. It made a big impact on me as a third grader, and I know that it would be the same for any child. The story is very interesting and understandable for children. I would certinly reccomend this book to any younger person, as well as adult who might stuggle reading the original work.

In this wonderful book (published by Moody Press), author Helen L. Taylor takes the Christian classic Pilgrim's Progress and reworks it for younger readers. She simplified the words and concepts, but stayed remarkably close to the original story. The chapters are nice and short, which makes this an excellent bedtime read, which is how I read it to my nine-year-old son and eleven-year-old daughter.

This is really two stories in one book, the first story tells of Christian, a small boy living in the City of Destruction, who hears Evangelist talking about the Celestial City where the great King lives. Christian becomes a pilgrim, and sets off for the Celestial City. Along the way he has many encounters and learns many lessons. The second story is about Christiana, a friend of Christian, who sets out with others to walk the same path, and they encounter many trials, often different than the ones faced by Christian.

This is an excellent book. It is jam-packed with Christian concepts, which you can then stop, at a convenient chapter break, and explain. Indeed, if I have one complaint, it's that I wish that this book had a study guide to accompany it! My children were a little disquieted by the martyrdom of one character, but as this is also a part of the Christian experience, I am glad that this book addressed it.

So, I must say that my children and I all loved this book. As a matter of fact, I think that I will make reading it a yearly tradition (for a while, anyway). We highly recommend this book!

The Waste Land, published in 1922 and considered one of the major works associated with modernism. This poem deals despairingly with the state of post-World War I society, which Eliot saw as sterile and decadent. Numerous references to religious imagery, mythology and literature of the past are used ironically to point out the comparative emptiness of Eliot's time.

The Waste Land is sometimes considered to be the greatest poem of the twentieth century. This collection from Dover (at an amazing price) includes this and several other of Eliot's poems. The Waste Land, however, is considered to be his masterpiece, his 'epic,' in a sense. In fact, it is interesting to compare Eliot's bleak vision of a land of waste to other, earlier epics.

The poem is in some sense a warning, in another sense a cry of despair. The image of the wasted land, of the spiritually degenerate human race, is depressing, yet the poem ends with a glimmer (albeit faint) of hope--salvation is possible, however unlikely. I am no expert on this poem, and like most people understand only fragments of it, but what I have gained from the poem I have found to be very enlightening, and very stirring.

Eliot draws many references from the old legend of the Fisher-King, and an idea of what this legend is about (in all its many forms) is useful in interpreting the poem. This is undoubtedly one of the classics in both English literature and modernist writings, and very worthwhile for anyone who is willing to take the time to study it.

T.S. Eliot wrote "The Waste Land" against the backdrop of a world gone mad-- searching for reason inside chaos, and striving to build an ark of words by which future generations could learn what had gone before, T.S. Eliot explores that greatest of human melancholy-- disillusionment. This is a difficult poem, but one well-worth exploring to its fullest. The inherent rhythms of Eliot's speech, the delightful, though sometimes obscure, allusions, and intricate word-craft, create an atmosphere of civilization on the edge-- in danger of forgetting its past, and therefore repeating it. In the end, only the poet is left, to admonish the world to peace, to preserve the ruins of the old life, and to ensure that future generations benefit from the disillusions of the past.

"Prufrock" is perhaps the best "mid-life crisis" poem ever written. In witty, though self-deprecating and often downright bitter, tones, Eliot goes on a madcap but infinitely somber romp through the human mind. This is a poem of contradictions, of repression, of human fear, and human self-defeat. Technically, "Prufrock" is brilliant, with a varied and intricate style suited to the themes of madness, love, and self-doubt.

Buy this. You won't regret it. If you're an Eliot fan, you probably have it anyway. If you're not, you will be when you put it down.

Like the reader from Sonoma, I am also an American married to an Afghan. I always tease him and tell others that I married him for his food. We live a few states away from his family so if I want my favorite Afghan foods I have to cook them myself - which is what I can do now. My husband and I are quite pleased with the results so far. And the background into the Afghan culture and customs the author provides is an added bonus. It's neat because there are "answers" to questions that I've asked his sisters and they didn't know - they just do what Mom, Grandma, Great-Grandma... do/did.

I am an American married to an Afghan and this book has made it possible for me to cook all of my husbands favorite dishes. I also now am able to cook for my two boys Chris and Jon so when they visit relatives they can appreciate the food of their culture. Many of the dishes I take to parties ie: buranee, chalow's and oh yes, the kebobs! I have heard "through the grape vine" and having been told by MANY of my Afghan relatives that I cook like "back home". This really makes me proud and I am sure for my husband too. The recipes are simple and easy to prepare. Helen has taken all the mystery out of afghan cooking ! Helen tasha kure. Great Job !

Having lived in Afghanistan many,many years ago this book was a great way to fulfill my nostalgic yearnings. I've often thought of Afghan food as the ultimate "comfort" food, but since I had a cook while I lived in Kabul, I never personally prepared any Afghan dishes. I do however, know when something tastes "right" and everything I've tried from this book has hit the mark so far. Tashakor, Helen!
