The Art of Syrian Cookery (Hippocrene International Cookbook Classics)

the art of syrian cookery is available with a new title
The Art of Syrian Cookery is available and can be ordered immediately. The book has a new title called "Food from Biblical Lands". The author went into the concordance of the Old and New Testament and mentions ingredients in her recipes that existed since biblical times, thus the new title. All the recipes in Helen Corey's original Art of Syrian Cookery can be found in Food from Biblical Lands. Her original book was on DoubleDay's best seller list for 24 years. Her new title, now in its third print won first place in the nation by the National Fed. of Press Women's contest out of 1700 books submitted. Judges comments: "Corey successfully makes dishes enticing, appetizing and easily understood. Directions clear enough for inexperienced cooks to want to try them. Excellence in abundance of recipes and photos." "She makes preparing dinner for 6 or 100 seem effortless."

The greatest book ever, now I want Helen's video
I not only have a first edition of this book, but also Food from Biblical Lands, which is an update of The Art of Syrian Cookery and so much more. The recipes are easy to prepare - with many step by step food photos. I don't know of any other book that is true to the foods of Syria and Lebanon in taste and ingredients. I can't wait until I get a copy of Helen Corey's newest video cooking tape on The Art of Syrian and Lebanese cooking. I had the pleasure of previewing it at a friend's house recently and I love her method of preparation and detailed explanation of ingredients to use (i.e.) burghul, which kind to buy - how to make yogurt in the micro-wave, etc. It will go hand in hand with my cookbook Food from Biblical Lands where she gives a complete background of the origination of Yogurt and its health benefits. And one of my favorite desserts, Ricotta cheese pastries, which I can also fix for diabetics. Her video also shows this step by step preparation and a colorful array of foods as seen in her book. And how easy it is to make flat bread on the grill (her newest method - so easy!)This is the most authentic book ever written on Middle Eastern cookery, now called "Food from Biblical Lands" I'm proud to have this in my collection.

Essential to keep our new generations in touch with the past
Basic cooking, easy to read simple in concept and has been a foundation for preparing ethnic food for our children and children's children. Needs to be re-generated for the future. Thanks to Helen Corey for keeping a link to our roots and family values. Book recipes puts Big Mac's to shame!!

A PAINLESS WAY TO GET YOUR DOSE OF ART...
I BOUGHT THIS BOOK BECAUSE I HAVE BEEN AN ART LOVER SINCE I WAS A KID. PART OF THE ENJOYMENT OF ART IS HAVING AN INTERPRETATION TO GO ALONG WITH WHAT YOU ARE SEEING. THIS BOOK WILL EXPLAIN WHY EXPERTS VIEW CERTAIN WORKS OF ART AND PROCLAIM THEM "GREAT". IT TEACHES PRINCIPLES OF ART FROM PAST AND PRESENT PERSPECTIVES IN A UNIQUE, 3-DIMENSIONAL WAY. IT ALSO INCLUDES INTERACTIVE ACTIVITIES SUCH AS A MOBLILE YOU CAN BUILD AND EVEN CHARACTERS THAT YOU CAN PLACE IN THE PAINTING TO UNDERSTAND CONCEPTS SUCH AS VANISHING POINT AND HORIZON LINE. EVERYONE WHO HAS SEEN MY COPY HAS BECOME ENGROSSED IN IT. EVEN THE PEOPLE WHO DIDN'T KNOW THAT THEY LIKED ART!

A wonderful introduction for the clueless.
I am one of the artlessly clueless. This book, and the others in the series, have all been wonderful fun, which is why they are also wonderful learning tools for beginners. Low stress, major payback, and marvelously intelligent all the way through. They won't make you an expert, but you'll have a good time and be better for it, too.

Where pop-up books and art history meet.
A beautifully designed pop-up book that's a MUST for any collector. Very educational and interactive.

Aging with Grace
These essays exhibit the playful, inciteful grace of growing old well. The author discovers with us the joy, the pain, and the wonder of experience. Age may have it's warts, but it sure beats the alternative. Highly recommended.

You say pellucid, I say just read it
These essays go so quickly to the heart of the matter, drawing on as much common sense and lived experience as intellectual clarity. A witty tone along with real-life meaning--quite a combination.

Perspicuous Pelucid Perfection!
All hyperbole aside, Helen Hills newest collection of insights and introspections are dead-on. This book leaves Sarah Ban Breathnach's aphorisms, Phillip C. McGraw didacticisms and Johnson/Blanchardhere cheese in the dust. If you read those guys but were left wanting, look no further.

It hits home!
I live in the neighborhood that Teresa and Bianca live in and have met girls like Bianca. As a young mother myself, this work really hit home. It's hard to understand the emotions and anxieties of a "child having a child," but Ms. Benedict truly knew how to do it and I praise her for that. Ms. Benedict captured the uncertainty, immaturity, and boldness of a "teen" so realistically. The best thing of all is that she let this child achieve maturity on her own after witnessing the destructive & selfish path she had created for herself and her family. She realized she had to think of her baby daughter -a very adult thing to do. So she made the best decision for her daughter. This book is a real tugger of heart-strings. I highly recommend.

If you want a good book here it is
This book was very good. S9ince there are many of our children are getting pregnant at a young age.

Bad Angel was honest and refreshing, a rare find.
I absolutely loved Bad Angel. It was so gripping, and it really takes the reader inside Bianca's life. I really cared about what happened to her and her family.

Showcases a new technique for making fiber jewelry
In Beads And Threads, Diane Fitzgerald and Helen Banes effectively collaborate to showcase a new technique for making fiber jewelry. Superbly illustrated throughout in full color, each project is clearly laid out, complete with a pattern suited to the needs of even the most novice of students. Beads And Threads is divided into four major chapters: A Gallery of Necklaces; Designing Your Own Necklace: Weaving Your Necklace; Patterns; and Finding or Making the Perfect Beads for Your Necklace. The informative and instructive text is enhanced further with appendices listing "Other Books and Publications"; "Bead Societies"; "Sources of Beads"; "Photo & Illustration Credits"; and a succinct index. If you are looking for a do-it-yourself weekend art, craft, or personal adornment project ideas, try browsing through Diane Fitzgerald and Helen Banes' Beads And Threads!

A wonderful new weaving and jewelry technique
This is a wonderful book that teaches the reader how to make fantastic beaded neckpieces. If you create and wear any of these pieces, people will stop you on the street to look at them! The instructions are clear and patterns are provided with which to get started. Its a craft technique that does not require a large investment in materials, mostly just interesting beads and pearl cotton.

equisite enticement, well-rewarded
Generous (and rare) is the crafter who shares the secrets of years of experience, includes shortcuts and tips and presents diagrams and step-by-step instructions. Fitzgerald and Banes do all this, then reward the reader with well-composed color photographs of the finished product.

While bead weaving is not for the timid or easily discouraged, the bold and the brave will be well-rewarded by trying the technique. Clear instructions make it easy to complete a piece that is satisfying from the creative center of the artist to the fingetips of the crafter. A must-read for those of us who dream of the color and texture satisfaction that weaving or jewelry making bring.

True Crime Fan Gives it Two Thumbs Up
As a true crime fan, I was excited when the book arrived, a lot faster than I had expected. I immediately delved into it and couldn't put it down. These two women have written a well constructed account of a bizarre murder and kidnapping that happened back in the early 70s. If I didn't know that the two were new writers, I would have assumed they were seasoned pro's of the genre after reading their book. Having worked with women in prison, they had a unique vantage point for becoming acquainted with the details of the lives and crimes of the women they write about. I look forward to "Deathwatch," too.

A CHILLING ABSENCE OF LOVE
I have known Mrs. Hunt and Ms. Smith for many years and I cannot tell you how excited I was to hear that this book finally got published. As a young boy I used to hear a bit about some of the inmates that Betty and Helen worked with and I was always fascinated. I think they have done a terrific job of giving the reader insight into Norma Jean's life and the severity of her crimes. The book makes you run a full gamut of emotions and is something that I was unable to put down. I am thrilled that this book was finally published because I have been wanting to read it for several years. I can hardly wait for the next book by these two wonderful authors to hit the stands.

A Chilling Absence Of Love
I cant tell you enough good about this book--you simply have to read it for yourself. I had read parts of this book some years ago as I live next door to one of the authors. But I had not seen it in years and when each author was sent a copy for approval I latched on to a copy and read it in one evening. The story is based on a true story of the crimes commited by a still incarcerated inmate and some instances are so horrific its unbelievable. I guarantee once you start reading, you wont be able to put it down. The life of this inmate is detailed and after reading this book you cant help but feel bad about her life and the things that happened to her. From the hospital to the courtroom, every page is great!

Clap Hands
We received this book as a gift when my son was 6 months old. We now have all of these books. My son is intrigued by the pictures and wants us to read it over and over! He's 15 months now and still loves it! A great book!

Clap Hands is wonderful!
My little 16 month old daughter loves this book. We have to read it every night before bedtime so she can "wave to daddy, wave to mom". I also read this book (along with tickle tickle and all fall down) to my 11 year old son when he was a baby/toddler. This book has lasting power over many years and I highly recommend it

Perfect to read out loud
Our toddler had us read this so many times that we memorized it quickly. It's rhythm and rhyme are so catchy that we could repeat the words YEARS after we returned it to the library. Now we're buying it as a baby gift for someone else to enjoy. Like "All Fall Down" (also by Oxenbury) the pictures are adorable multi-cultural children having fun together. It's a nice size and length for a board book.

A must have for artists in all mediums!!
I just received this book for Christmas 2002 and I have read it and re-read it! It has a wealth of information and is even a good reminder for those who might not have painted in a while. It helps you attain effects that you want and gives some step-by-step descriptions to help you understand what the author is talking about. I find that the information on casting shadows and the information on focal points most helpful. Helen Van Wyk also helps you to dimensionalize your art. Once you have read this book you will not look at colors in the same way. "The 4 Questions" will have you looking at art completely different. Don't paint without it!

great novice manual!
This is a great manual for beginning and intermediate painters. It is arranged in a rather unusual way: by paint color. Within each chapter there are step-by-step paintings showing the color's usage. While I found the the organization odd at first, I quickly grew to appreciate it. There are colors I never would have thought to put in my palate, but seeing them in action was very valuable. Likewise, having a blended value scale for each paint was wonderful!

What I found most valuable as an beginner/ interm. painter was being able to see a variety of paintings in stages. And not just "one, two, three, boom its done" like many books, but really layer by layer. She touches on a couple of different styles, discussing glazing as well as her painterly approach.

This book also has valuable reference pages discussing (and displaying) color scales, color temperatures, earth tones, blending tricks, etc. It touches on portraits, backgrounds, and a variety of other related topics. I have read a number of other basic painting books, and this is my favorite. I have also seen (and own) other of Helen van Wyk's books, and while they are nice, this is by far the most valuable (and it includes some paintings and sections repeated in other books, i.e. portrait painting and color mixing bits).

A very practical reference book on oil colors
This is a very practical reference book on oil colors, as I see it. The author covers briefly materials in oil painting, then goes straight to discussing colors on her palette, including (but not limited to) Thalo Yellow Green, Cadmium Yellow, Cadmium Orange, Cadmium Red, Burnt Umber, Sienna, etc... For each color, the author expresses her points using a step-by-step demo of painting subject matter. In addition, the author also throws in discussions on drapery, flesh colors, themes, colors of metals, etc... What a treat!

This is how I vision readers can benefit from this book:

1) For those who'd like to get their feet wet with certain colors, step-by-step demos will guide them through important steps to create realist excercise painting in the book.

2) For those who'd like to "break the rules" (if any), this book serves as excellent examples of what colors can be used for what materials (metals, earth, wood, etc...). Knowing all these, breaking the rules is even more fun and unique.

3) For the rest, it is a very practical reference on oil colors in terms of knowing what the "final colors" may look like in the context of a painting, even without getting "down and dirty" to try and mix them.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Lets go to Tulsa!!!
What a lovely story of such beautiful times in American culture. Paul you must feel especially blessed that your grandmother captured this portion of your heritage for you to share with your grandchildren. I was fortunate to have a kind neighbor here in Cypress Village, my Florida retirement community, that let me borrow this book. I look forward to vacationing in Tulsa so that I may feel some of the true magic of Oklahoma. This author took me in from page one as if she yelled out "Come in This House right now, its where you belong." Do yourself a favor and read this book. Thank you Helen.

Should be a best seller
I absolutely enjoyed reading this book. I've passed it all around the nursing home and it has become a favorite among me and my girlfriends. We sometimes have weekly meetings discussing the pro's and con's of living among a rural community in Northern Oklahoma, and this very book is usually the center of our attention. I've both laughed and cried when reading and the unusual scenerios really hit home. Way to go Helen!

Jam-packed with great information!
You can spend five minutes or five hours at a sitting with this gem. Even a casual browse through a few pages will teach you something you didn't know about Vikings. A must for anybody studying Norse culture, and a valuable addition to their collections.

Avert Your Eyes Europhobes.
-
A cultural atlas presents its readers with a tremendous amount of information. Even a casual browsing through this work reveals enough information to provide the seeker of knowledge with a firm grasp on the history, geography, and culture of the efficient, effective "Warriors of the North" known as Vikings or Northmen.

This atlas explains and defines the Viking Age, beginning in the 8th century and ending in the 11th century with the creation of the Scandinavian nations of Sweden, Denmark, Norway, and Iceland. These tall, blonde, blue-eyed Vikings also left their mark on lands from North America, across Europe into Russia -- which was named for the Rus, a Swedish tribe -- and into the Byzantine Empire of Asia Minor and beyond. The Vikings endowed the Europeans who followed them with the Viking genes for bravery, impudence, physical beauty, and intelligence, genes which Viking warriors spread widely in the Northern Hemisphere.

The compilers of this work, edited by James Graham-Campbell, present the reader with a plethora of charts, maps, and captioned photographs illustrating and enriching cogent expository text.

Everyone on the planet, ... will recognize this book as a valuable tool in the study of a great European people.

A great resource for the big picture
I love this book. It has lots of maps and illustrations. Best of all it covers the entire gamut of the Viking universe. It is a wonderful resource for getting your head around the big picture of the Viking age. I have researched Viking Age history for years now and this is one of the BEST books I have ever found
