Just when you thought evil couldn't get any worse...
Truly a master of his art, F. Paul Wilson grabs you HARD and doesn't let go with Nightworld. I read The Keep. Scared the hell out of me. I read The Tomb and The Touch. Great stories, but I never saw the connection. Then, with Reborn and Reprisal, I was beginning to see what was coming. And Nightworld was it. Rasalom (evil incarnate) is freaking nasty. There is nothing he wouldn't do to get this planet called 'Earth'. Nightworld was a 24-hour book. Set aside 24 hours straight, becuase you cannot put the book down. Characters that span 5 novels come together to fight an evil that is older than "Old". To take the time and patience to write 5 books to set the stage for this final novel is a talent most of us can only dream of. I'm glad Mr. Wilson chose to share it with us. You MUST read the five aforementioned novels to get the true feeling of this series. You won't be sorry.

Apocalyptic horror with fantasy undertones.
In Nightworld, the sixth and final book in the Adversary Cycle, F. Paul Wilson achieves a beautiful climax to the millenia-old war between the champions of good and evil, Glaeken and Rasalom. As the days become progressively shorter because of a late-rising and early-setting sun, cries of armageddon resound around the globe. Then a 200-ft hole opens up in Central Park, each night out of which pour swarms of alien insects who devour anything and everything they can. As scientists futilely try to understand these phenomena and the world is plunged further into inescapable madness, one wizened old man must struggle to gather a group of unlikely heroes together for the final stand against the force behind the chaos--Rasalom, ancient champion of evil. In Nightworld, F. Paul Wilson manages to stitch together the previous books in the series(The Keep, The Tomb, The Touch, Reborn, and Reprisal), most of which seem to have been thought up on completely different drawing boards, into a skin-crawling page-turner. Although adding The Tomb and The Touch to the Adversary Cycle seems somewhat of an afterthought at times, when you finish Nightworld you will have nothing but fond (as well as freaky) memories of the series. I reccomend that you read the rest of the books in the series before you touch Nightworld, as it might otherwise make quite a bit less sense. Also, reading the previous books will help you develop more of an understanding of the characters, particularly Glaeken, Father Bill, and Repairman Jack. Also, if you like fantasy, the series hints several times about earth's distant past...

EXCELLENT BOOK!
F. Paul Wilson really intermeshed the characters and storylines from his five "prequels" in this final book of the series. (The five "prequels" are The Keep, Reborn, Reprisal, The Touch, and The Tomb.) The amazing fact about all of these books, and even Nightworld, is that each may be read individually without having read the others, and you still understand what occurs within each. My husband and I were very impressed with the way Mr. Wilson pulled all the intersecting stories together and made sense of it. This is definitely an "Edge of Your Seat" and "Can't Put it Down" book. Job well done Mr. Wilson.

A good book when business is slow
I have to admit that I have not delved into the book too much yet partly because the areas that I skimmed were old news to me. It does, however, have a wealth of information for those who are not familiar with marketing oneself. When I have slow times in my business, I pick it up and try to pick up new tips or refresh old tips. I am sure I will get good use out of it.

Buy the new edition-it is well worth it
I originally bought the first edition of this book several months ago. I wasn't sure I wanted to replace it with this new edition, but am very glad I did. Paul, Sarah and Laura have helped me focus and pick one thing that my business will be known for. As a professional organizer, I was trying to be all things to too many people. Now, I have decided to focus on paper filing systems for entrepreneurs. Being a paper organizer is easier than being a closet, kitchen, basement and office organizer. Marketing becomes so much easier with a niche.

This book also explains that you don't have to use marketing techniques that are inconsistant with your personality. You don't have to make cold calls to get business, unless you like making cold calls.

There are several tips on doing a PR campaign, putting together brochures, selecting a logo. If you have a small business, you will love this book.

Really Big Bang for the Buck
I read this book cover to cover in about three days. I have used the knowledge I've gained to grow my own business. I also share the information with my accounting and consulting clients to help them grow their businesses. The book is very readable and the methods are definitely "real world". One of the many useful topics is finding a marketing strategy that works for you. Many people find cold calling an excruciating way to get new business. This book provides a wide range of marketing activities that are much less painful and more effective. If you want to grow your business, this book is a great investment. For me, it more than paid for itself within a week.

Watkins' best
I decided to read six Paul Watkins books in order of publication date. Night over Day over Night was the most satisfying. Tightly written, it builds to a shattering climax that is as believable as it is horrifying. A truly great war novel written from the perspective of young German boys caught up in the absurdities of their training and the conflict itself. Sebastian is a character who should be studied by generations. The other books in order of preference are: In the Blue Light of African Dreams; Calm at Sunset, Calm at Dawn; The Story of My Disappearance; The Promise of Light; Archangel

a personal favorite
I've read Night Over Day Over Night dozens of times, and every time I appreciate it more. Sebastian transforms from a good natured yet slightly jaded high school student to an emotionally dead battle survivor in such a natural and believable manner, and the development in many characters is beyond that found in most novels. It always astonishes me to think that Paul Watkins was but 21 when he wrote the book. Everything about it has an authentic feel; it's hard to believe that Watkins did not live in WWII Germany. The scene between Sebastian and Breder in the woods, and the one where Sebastian is carrying the dying Schwerin on his shoulders, are two of the most memorable I've ever read.

Great Novel by a Great Writer
Sebastian enlists in the SS less than a year before the war will be over. He goes through basic training, an ordinary soldier in ordinary training, doing ordinary exercises, with ordinary hopes and fears. But of course, there's nothing ordinary about any soldier in any war.

The story follows him from country innocence to the evils of war, from hope to damnation. With clear and simple prose, written with such simple artistry, Watkins again delivers an outstanding novel with fully realized characters.

The day will come when people stop saying he follows in the footsteps of Hemingway and admi that Watkins surpasses him.

Above and Beyond
The Story Of A Soldier, by Ivan Paul Mehosky is a wonderful first person account of a heroic officer who knew how to fight and get the better of the enemy, and knew how to prepare men for war so they could fight as a team with the proper attitude, inflict great damage on the enemy, and have a chance to survive the hell of combat. Mehosky's creed, "you fight like you train, and repetition of tasks equal confidence," saw this echoed in his words countless times to his men, "in war, there is no simulation!" Like their leader, Mehosky's men were tough, motvated, confident, and smart, paratroop soldiers who were some of our best ever to fight in battle against well-trained foes. Some of the descriptions of his experiences and survival are astonishing as well as stirring and vivid. Lt. Mehosky's account of his heroic rescue of two wounded soldiers under intense enemy mortar and small arms fire in front of Carentan, France was bravery above and beyond the call of duty that truely merits our nation's highest honors. There are accounts I have never seen in other books, acounts I want to read again and again and ponder. This well written book should be read by all ages-young and old. It will stir your heart and imagination! You won't be disappointed.

Inspirational reading from cover to cover!
The Story of a Soldier is a superb story of one soldiers heroism, patriotism and love for both family and country. It vividly depicts the rigorous training and life of an airborne soldier spanning 30 years and through 3 wars. Throughout his career, Col. Mehosky lead by example, through moral integrity and courage. I have personally taken several leadership techniques and successfully applied them in my daily routine as a manager for a major corporation. After reading this book, everyone will have a new found respect for the 101st and all those who risked their lives for our freedom. Powerful from start to finish, The Story of a Soldier is a must read. You will love this book!

A Real Life Hero
The author brings the everyday living of his father to life in this book. Colonel Mehosky was a "Soldier's Soldier." He was the type of officer that I wish I could have worked for while I was an enlisted soldier in the Army. He was an inspiration to me. Today young people are searching for heroes. Well, I highly recommend this book to those of us who need a hero to look up to. I believe that all soldiers should read this factual account of war and survival as a training manual and an inspiration for those boring moments in the field when you think there is nothing more to do. Thank you Ivan for writing the story and thank you Colonel Mehosky for living it!!

Tracking & the Art of Seeing : How to Read Animal Tracks & Sign

More than just tracking....
I own the first edition of this book, which I consider to be a wonderful resource not just for reading tracks, but to learn about the animals in general. I refer to the book quite often at work ( I work as an interpretive naturalist at a state recreation area) and bought a copy to keep at home as well. The excellent photographs alone make this book a real keeper.

Best tracking book
Detailed accounts of wildlife encounters. Personal stories put you in the shoes of the tracker. Great pictures and examples of animals and their tracks. Easy to read, loaded with information. A must have for field work.

Best Tracking Book to Be Found
This is a truly magnificent tracking book. The book has no pseudo-spiritual dribble about tracking ants across rocks or pressure points; it is full of useful information, and it is clear that the author is as genuine of an expert naturalist as they get. He shares an incredible wealth of information on how to examine and analyze the wilderness from a microcosmic level. The photography is outstanding and the descriptions of animal signs are excellent. Being a survival instructor, I have read many fine books on tracking animals and observing their signs, but I have never read one that I learned more from than this one.

Wondefully comprehensive
Anyone working with Director 8.5's 3D engine needs to have a copy of this book to work and learn productively. Paul does not skimp on the fundamentals of the 3D engine and vector math, nor does he bore you with general Director8/Lingo stuff. This book shows you just what you need to get working in 3D and provides a solid structured reference for each aspect of the 3D engine.

I can't imagine how much more slowly I would be learning the 3D programming without having read this book--Paul definitely gave me the requisite knowledge to just jump right in and start working with this environment comfortably, saving me weeks of self-training. I can't recommend this book enough.

AN AMAZING BOOK
This is the best multimedia book I have ever read. I am a multimedia/web graphics programmer, and I have read at least 5 books on Director and a few good Flash books, but this one has taken me further than any other single book I own.

You will need a good foundation in Lingo to really benefit from this book, and if you have that, this book will pay for itself several times over. Paul Catanese's style is very easy to follow, and it is peppered with a lot of other general knowledge regarding aesthetics, mathematics, and the general world of multimedia. I spent 20 hours of my vacation time reading this book last week and I feel comfortable with things in Director 3D that only a month ago seemed so far away in terms of my programming abilities.

Paul's chapters on download and file optimization are excellent, and he teaches not only how to work in 3D, but how to be mindful of how well your projects will work on various client machines, which is no small issue. In fact, Paul touches on so many other relevant issues such as building custom schedulers to create timeout objects that run independent of the main time line, bones animation, advancing texturing techniques, using alpha channels to create very nice texture effects, collision detection without using Havok, and many other important topics in the context of Director 3D.

Paul has also put together several "labs" on the CD to help you understand various utilities: particle systems, fog, bones animation, etc.

He really sets himself apart from so many other authors (we won't mention names) who put out quick books about Director 3D to make a quick buck that really don't do justice to the subject matter.

Paul takes the time to teach you Director 3d they way you would want to learn it in a college or university setting. It makes sense; according to the book, when it was published, he was teaching Digital Imaging at a University in Chicago.

Get the book.

Its Excellent!!.. Its worth!...
Finally, this is the book that has made me understand about advance Director's 3D concepts and techniques. I have been looking through all Director 8.5 Books released to dates, and this is the only book i am happy to worked with. Its excellent in its contents, well structures, really understanding examples & very good concepts to work in 3D environment. I am developing a 3D Kiosk with walkthroughs in 3D environment. I will recommend this book to everyone who want to develop 3D content in Director for games, Multimedia application or Business application.
Thanks Paul Catanese!.. I will look forward for more advance techniques in 3D world from him!...

A brilliant play
Required to read Henry for my AP English Language class, I came into the play with a bias. I honestly felt that it would be a boring political play. I was utterly wrong! A huge fan of Shakespeare, I found Henry V to be a formidable match for the Bard's more critically acclaimed plays, such as Hamlet and Macbeth. Henry has it all! Shakespeare's attitude toward Henry the King is certainly one of admiration. By communicating the fact that an effective monarch must have a complete understanding of the common subjects (Pistol and Bardolph and Quickly), Shakespeare sets up Henry to be the ideal Christian king. The controlled language of Henry's speeches, particularly his response to the Dauphin's idiotic insult, also glorifies Henry. I certainly recommend this play to anyone, fan of Shakespeare or not.

Profoundly Brilliant!
Written by Shakespeare for Queen Elizabeth I amidst a time of Irish rebellion, Henry V more than adequately serves its intended purpose of galvanizing nationalistic fervor. It proved itself to be an unwavering and unfaltering impetus of patriotism in Shakespeare's day, during WWII, and still today it continues to resonate and reverberate this provocatively telling tale of the most gloriously revered monarch in English history.

Henry V's stirring orations prior to the victorious battles of Harfleur("Once more unto the breach") and Agincourt("We few, we happy few, we band of brothers") astonish and inspire me every time I read them. Simply amazing. Having read Henry IV Parts I&II beforehand, I was surprised Shakespeare failed to live up to his word in the Epilogue of Part II in which he promised to "continue the story, with Sir John in it." The continuing follies of the conniving Bardolph, Nym, & Pistol and their ignominious thieving prove to be somewhat of a depricating underplot which nevertheless proves to act as a succinct metaphor for King Harry's "taking" of France.

Powerful and vibrant, the character of Henry V evokes passion and unadulterated admiration through his incredible valor & strength of conviction in a time of utter despondency. It is this conviction and passion which transcends time, and moreover, the very pages that Shakespeare's words are written upon. I find it impossible to overstate the absolute and impregnable puissance of Henry V, a play which I undoubtedly rate as the obligatory cream of the crop of Shakespeare's Histories. I recommend reading Henry IV I&II prior to Henry V as well as viewing Kenneth Branagh's masterpiece film subsequent to reading the equally moving work.

We Few, We Happy Few
On D-Day British officers read Henry's famous words to their men as they approached the beach. When Churchill needed material for his famous "Few" speech, his thoughts turned to the pages of Henry V. From "once more into the breach" to "we happy few, we band of brothers" this play resonates with Shakespeare's paen to England's warrior king. Oh, you'll be a bit confused at the start if you haven't read Henry IV parts 1 and 2, but this is primarily the story of Henry V's victory at Agincourt. Whether the play glorifies war or just Henry you will have to decide. There is much food for thought here for the perceptive reader. But then Shakespeare is always provocative.

My daughter's current favorite at age 4
She & I enjoy reading it aloud before bedtime. The book seemed to help her understand the context of love outside the family. My only concern is that Mr. Hatch's mood seems totally governed by outside influences, rather than him making choices about how he can present himself to the world. However, the message that you can really influence other people's mood when you are happy is a great one.

I love this book!
It's such a heartwarming story. It teaches you that you can be happy. I've read the book so many times! It's a great book that you'll love reading again and aagain.

Beautiful book about shared love and friendship.
This is a book about a man with seemingly no personal connections. He doesn't speak to or socialize with anyone. No one loves him because he is detached. But when a valentine package is delivered to his house with the message "somebody loves you" things begin to change. He begins to look at everyone differently - having no idea from whom the gift was given. Before you know it he has become a loving friend to many, and he is loved in return. He then finds out that the valentine package was delivered to him by mistake and returns to his old ways assuming that nobody does love him. But by this time he has made many new friends who care very much and inspire him with the message that somebody does love him after all!

This is a story that teaches that to receive love you have only to give it. A great book to share with young children.

Empire of the Sun
Published in Audio Cassette by Chivers Audio Books (1996)
Authors: J. G. Ballard and Paul Egan
Amazon base price: $
Used price: $27.90
Average review score:

A harrowing coming-of-age story
While captioned a novel, J. G. Ballard's Empire of the Sun is very much a true life memoir. In this book (made into a film by Steven Spielberg), Ballard first tells the life of a boy ("Jim") in pre-Pearl Harbor Shanghai, the privileged young son of an English business executive. When the war begins, Jim and his parents are separated, and Jim survives for weeks on his own, living of the food left in his and his neighbors' abandoned mansions. Most of the book is set in the Lunghua prison camp, where Jim is forced to grow up under circumstances no boy should endure. Finally, the war ends, and he is reunited with his parents under the shadow of nascent Chinese communism. Ballard tells a compelling story, and pulls no punches. Much of what Jim experiences is shocking, and Ballard neither embellishes nor understates Jim's experiences. Flies, death, and decomposition are everywhere, as are avarice and (occasionally) kindness. This is a very different "coming of age" story, but one I thing a high-schooler would enjoy. (Query: Ballard assumes from his reader a fairly good grounding in World War II and cold war history, which I have. I understand that many young people lack such knowledge. Would such young people understand and appreciate Ballard's story and artistry? I don't know). I suspect this book will be read and recommended for many years to come.

Not what you expect
This is an account of JG Ballard's childhood in Shanghai during World War II when he was imprisoned in an internment camp away from his parents but just knowing that alone tells you nothing about the book. Yes, it takes place in WWII but that's almost irrelevant to the book, Jim is barely aware of the war as far as most people would conceive it and the entire war seems to take place mostly on the periphery . . . if it doesn't affect him directly than he doesn't care. On one level this is a nicely detailed account of life in Shanghai, especially in the beginning. Ballard is a good enough writer that he can describe such mundane events with enough flair that they take on another ambiance entirely. This becomes more pronounced as Jim winds deeper into the war itself, with the book becoming almost dream like in its quality. A lot of people I think object to the actions of Jim, which are very much what we don't expect. He's fairly self centered and makes a lot of weird rationalizations but I had no trouble understanding his POV, even if I didn't totally agree with it. He's a kid caught in something he can barely understand, so he has to break it down into something he can understand and sometimes that means making it a game and sometimes that means doing some things that most of us would interpret as cruel. That was the most interesting part of the novel for me, watching Jim trying to cope with the events around him, deal with the fact that he can barely remember his parents, with the fact that the only life he can really remember after a while are in the camp itself. With everything filtered through his perceptions the reader has to evaluate for him or herself what exactly the truth is . . . Jim's perception of some characters can change over and over, or maybe not even agree with what the character is doing, but that's because he's looking at it through the eyes of a child and by way of Jim, so is the reader as well. The white flash of the atom bomb that comes toward the end isn't even a climax, it's just another strange event in a war where everything strange is normal and for Jim it doesn't even signify the end of the war, for him the war never really seems to end. Haunting in its grim depiction of reality, this stands as one of the better books to come out about WWII simply for its personal perspective.

Page turner
My friend recommended this book to me because I'd read the color purple so she thought I'd like it. I did! The books about a young boy who is abandoned in Shanghi during world war II. The events that follow the boy through finding himself alone and to eventually, being held in a prison of war camp by the Japanese are breath-taking. Some parts of the book were a little drawn out for my liking but all in all, this is a great book for your collection.

One good man defeats terrorism
Eilart is an honest corporate salesman who unwittingly finds himself tangling with IRA terrorists, and stage-center in a controversy which could unseat the president of the United States. I liked the character of Eilart, and the pacing of the plot. Especially by the end I was furiousy turning the pages. This book has more depth than Ken Follett's, whose books used to be my favorite thrillers, and a story-line worthy of Grisham. I look forward to more by this author.

A MUST READ!!
I really felt that this book was very well written because it never has a dull moment. Each time you finished one page it left you with so much suspense that you had to keep reading to see what exciting events would unfold next. The whole idea behind the scandels definitely make you wonder could this really happen in this day and time? I was intriqued to learn how terrorism could be actually be taking place right around us and how the government could so easily be covering it up. I enjoyed the clean nature that the author choose to write with so in return it can be a book that you could share with all.

The Eilart Affair
This book was a joy for me to read. I could relate to the value system that made the story so real. The way the story evolved and developed is what I enjoyed most. The author has a great imagination and was able to bring it together for an emotional conclusion. I think this story would make a super movie. I hope Al Pacino (Scent of a Woman) could play Fred.

I hope Mr. Bergstrom keeps writing, I would enjoy reading this quality of book in the future.
