Gonzo Journalism Redux
Spider Jerusalem is Hunter Thompson channeled for a new generation. This series is such fun to read because even though it is set in the future it clearly comments on the state of our world today. Ellis is a new kind of Gonzo Journalist and Spider is his voice.

Ellis comments on everything from politics to love to war to constant [chemical] use and drinking. All of the Transmetropolitan books are like a visual reinterpretation of Hunter Thompson's work and bring its crash through the door of [weak], comfortable people who just thought Hunter was a character played by Johnny Depp. Anyone whoever read and enjoyed Thompson's work should shovel all of the Transmet novels into their heads immediately and love it!

A new sense of focus
This TPB is a little bit lighter than the extremely dark volumes that came before it -- Spider shakes off his depression and resumes the fight against the exploitative powers that be with new vigor. The absurd (rather than purely black) humor of the early volumes returns, particularly in the hilarious first issue of this volume, in which Spider's life is parodied in a variety of genres... Ellis' comic writing is at its peak here.

As always, however, the comedy and vulgarity are tempered by a genuinely disturbing dystopian vision of a modern Western democracy gone subtly totalitarian. Among the comics being written today, _Transmetropolitan_ is nearly unique in its skillful satirical handling of serious issues.

The plot thickens.....
Thats the best way to describe this trade paperback. In this story arc, Spider grapples with the fact that his overexposure has made him a cartoon of sorts. He decides it's time to step up with war with The Smiler, a.k.a. President Gary Callahan. I cant reveal much more, except that it's a pivotal point in the overall Transmet story. If you read the series, you must pick this up. If you don't, START, then get this one. If you cant read learn. Yes I am ranting, but it's that damn good.

Romney is right on!
To me this book is a cross between a self help book and a guide to modern Christianity. Romney bravely goes where most Baptists have never gone before; into a realm of acceptance and true compasion. He explains in his book that getting closer to God is not about pointing your finger at the bad people, it's about not pointing your finger at all. This is a breath of fresh air to me as I am fed up with conservitive religion with all of it's dogma and predjudice. Hats off to Romney for showing us how to block out that negative propoganda from the religious right and how to look within for God. What I got most from the book was learning to quiet my mind, to get in touch with my own feelings, and how to promote peace from within.

Embracing Wilderness
The wilderness times in our lives seem frightening, desolate. Another mystic called them "the dark night of the soul." Dr. Romney has done a remarkable thing in this book in reviving wilderness as ancient metaphor for life, and offering an exploration that can "transform the wilderness of life from arenas of confusion and fear into places of emancipation and hope."

It is extraordinarily rare to find a Baptist writer with the soul of a mystic. But the mystic tradition shines thru Romney's writing.

If one is reaching the limits of the institutional church, and longs for that deeper life, this book can help one explore the wilderness -- to find that the path does bring us Home.

I have found my new montra for life
"Blessed are those who forgive life for not being all they have wanted it to be, for they shall create a new beginningfor themselves.".....Wilderness Marker 16(Wilderness Spirituality) Rodney Romney

I did not expect to find a daily devotional in this book, but have been blessed by them. Dr. Romney takes you threw a new spiritual Journey via wilderness markers. These wilderness markers bring you closer to the earth and a new spiritual path.

This book is full of open and affirming love for all, opening a personal spiritual life to those the church and society has often tried to take form those they feel are not worth God's love.

Your Guide to the Sky
Published in Paperback by Lowell House (1997)
Authors: Rick Shaffer and Rodney G. Baker
Amazon base price: $17.95
Used price: $3.30

A great place to start
If you're new to backyard astronomy and are seeking a guide, here's the ticket. This covers all the bases, from the moon, sun, planets, and constellations to the locations of deep-sky objects, from lunar and solar observations to how to pick and set up the appropriate telescope (good information from a man who has designed award-winning telescopes). Shaffer starts at the beginning with the basic layout of the night sky and continues into greater detail without getting overly technical or confusing the neophyte. Every topic is presented in a friendly and engaging manner, with touches of dry humor, that eases the unfamiliar into the techniques of backyard astronomy without overwhelming them. Along the way he adds details about general scientific concepts as needed (such as explaining photons and spectrums) and includes sky maps, charts, graphs and other things to help guide the reader. An altogether excellent guide.

LOOKING AT THE OUTER LIMITS
If you enjoyed the "Star Wars" and "Star-Trek" films, and your visits to your local planetarium, you're in for a treat. This book helps you uncover stars, comets, galaxies, nebulas, planets on your own time. Equipped with the maps, photographs and the space parameters given you in this book, you can step out at night in your own back yard, gaze at the sky and chart your own course. No rocket ships included. You won't need them to apply this excellent handbook to the heavens.

nice, simple, clear beginner's guide
This is one of those books from which you can take as much or as little as you want. Shaffer is not intent on making an in-depth astronomer out of everyone (although if that's what you're bound for, this book will be a fine first leg up). His presentation is clear and friendly, good for browsing, for reference, or for reading straight through. Use it however suits you.

The first three chapters cover basics -- longitude and latitude and why they matter; how to read sky maps; paths of the sun, moon, and planets; basic terms; how telescopes work; etc. These might sound like intimidating topics but they're covered in just enough depth and not a bit more (e.g. "A Very Short Primer on Light").

A nice feature is on page two, a section titled "If You're in a BIG Hurry, What to Read First" (i.e. what parts of this book).

After discussion of telescopes, including how to choose one and what to do with it, there are five chapters on sky-watching. First there's the close stuff: artificial satellites, the moon... and then there's the farther away stuff: planets, stars, nebulas, groups of galaxies.

There's a sky map for each month; the maps are easy to read. Beginner that I was, with this book I was able to identify a few stars I'd noticed several nights in a row -- turned out to be one side of Orion. The fact that what I saw in the sky was recognizable on the map here is a big plus.

This is a book that will last you long past the very-beginner stage.

Recommending bright courses of action for the future
America's Highest Destiny: The Causes Of Nine-Eleven And A Bold Vision Of America's Role In The World by professional mediator/facilitator Roger L. Plunk is a clarion manifesto exhorting America's duty to promote democracy, human rights, and peace. As the world's only remaining superpower, America bears the responsibility of what Plunk calls "moralpolitiks", in using its wealth and knowledge to improve the entire world. Individual chapters cogently examine the troubled areas of Afghanistan, Israel and Palestine, and Iraq, looking at America's recent actions and recommending bright courses of action for the future. A welcome contribution to Contemporary Political Science collections, America's Highest Destiny is highly recommended as thoughtful and thought-provoking reading.

Amazingly insightful well written-Informative & Educational
This book was such an enjoyable read. With no wasted words, this book got strait to the point. If found myself both informed and entertained, and ultimately convinced that America does have a Higher Destiny to reach out for. Without political bias most books are marred by, this book clearly reflects objective opinion and insight on some of the most important matters facing our country today.

The depth and detail and the vivid photos are impressive
This comprehensive reference volume will appeal to both specialty and general-interest libraries: American Aquarium Fishes provides over 118 color and over 200 black and white photos of various species of aquarium fish, providing detailed discussions on where to find native fishes, how to collect and transport them around the globe, and regional rules of collecting. The depth and detail and the vivid photos are impressive.

The best reference to date!
It's about time that a talented group of aquarium hobbyist (who are also biologists I believe) got together to write a book that the layman can understand and appreciate. You will not find convuluted passages common in the scientific literature. Each species account is well written and contains the information that the hobbyist wants.

Goldstein, Harper, and Edwards are well known hobbyist and if there are any real experts in the field, it's these guys.

This is an all around great reference for the North American native fish hobbyist.

an excellent book for premed students
For someone who is initially exposed to anatomy and physiology (even basic histology and embryology!), it's quite readable and understable. It even makes this complicated subject much fun. Colorful graphics and diagrams help describe concepts and processes more precisely and interestingly. You'll love physiology after reading it. "No, I don't think so" will probably be your answer when your classmates comment that physiology is too hard and dull. Fairly economical purchase of a combined anatomy and physiology text.

Very practice book.....
This book is very practice for students who study medicine (anatomy and physiology)... Students will find detailed information about physiology and anatomy of human body (brain, heart, kidney... and about intracellular transfer, ATP...) really, it's very good book!

Wide range of recipes and difficulty
This is an excellent cookbook, providing a wide range of recipes with varied levels of difficulties ranging from the simple to the difficult. I've tried a few of the more complex ones with great success. There are some terms which might be a bit unfamiliar, but otherwise, a very nice cookbook. I highly recommend the naked raviolis with spinach.

An Perfect cook book
This is one of the nicest cook books i have ever seen, great pictures and recepies by the top chefs of the Australian cuisine. I am in the restaurant business and we can use most of the recepies very well. Thanks again.

Words are not enough...
Dealing with virtually every essential aspect of English grammar, this book will probably achieve a special status at universities worldwide. Never have I seen such a splendid achievement in english studies before! Containing a well-researched and thorough account of all grammatical structures, this book can be used both as a complete reference as well as a meticulous elaboration and analysis of english grammar. I own a great number of well-written english grammar books but this book surpasses all of them in every aspect. Not only because it is very comprehensive and meticulous but also because it assumes a different approach to english grammar. Even though the book has 1300 pages, you will discover how easy it is to find whatever you may be looking for. Further, upon locating the target information, you will learn that the structure of the book facilitates reading and comprehension. Also, unnecessary terminology has been removed from the book in order to ascertain understanding. Needless to say, every serious english student should own this book. Using the word masterpiece to describe this book will not suffice. See for yourself!

Exactly what english grammar was in need of!
I have just purchased an exemplar of this book, and although some people might find it rather complicated, I feel certain in saying that it is exactly what english grammar was in need of: a thorough coverage of its features in a modern, descriptive, and factual way; and, where people may call it complicated, i'd rather call it complete and thoroughly detailed. In this wonderful work, obsolete concepts such as Latin principles misleadingly applied to English (which is NOT a romanic language) and traditional spurious justifications are abandoned, and english is faced as the completely unique language it certainly is. Being an inhabitant of a country in which an actually latin language is spoken as its mother one, I know how much such a group of languages diverge from english in so many ways, and thus think this book an extremely appropriate account on english and its unique properties and traits.
Maybe, the trait of the book which pleased me most was its modern way to reorganize determinate parts of English grammar which should have been reviewed right at the dawn of modern english centuries ago. The main problem with previous grammar books was their habit of analysing English as though it were a latin language, attributing to it characteristics it does not intrinsecally contain )which this book promptly denies), such as the existence of an inflectional subjunctive mood.
Therefore, one can really say that what the book does is provide a renewed and much sounder description on the modern language we call english, discarding many old concepts; some that do not really surprise us with their being removed, and others which quite much do! However, I am very sure that this rich descriptive work shall not stand on the book stores' shelves without arousing all kinds of indignant critics from conservative students of the language, specially the older ones, who may have partly helped in the creation of the system disputed by the book.
But I must say that anyone with a reasonable inclination shall understand the authors' propositions and assertions, taking them very seriously, for those are based on extremely well - formulated and sensible arguments; actually, i doubt someone open - minded could read the book from beggining to end without at least having a couple of former opinions and beliefs changed by the practicaly irrefutable evidences displayed by the authors as proofs of the applicability of their propositions.
I hope this book has more purchasers, and, consequently, more reviews so that debates about important grammar issues may start, for I believe that this newer, sounder analysis of English language need be displayed to all advanced English students, in order that important and inevitable reformulations in its unfortunately obsolete grammar concepts happen. Whoever has love for this language, like myself, shall be glad to debate, and this is an appeal i direct even to the highest authorities among teachers and grammarians.

Countdown to Millennium

Wonderful artwork from book covers, CD's & commisions
This is great sampling of Rodney Matthews fantasy art. It features mostly color artwork but does have some black and white drawings. There is commentary on about half the images.

It features his artwork from all areas including book covers, CD's, movies/TV, prints and commissions. Most of the work is fantasy based. Themes include alien landscapes, space, and mythological creatures.

One of my favorite pieces is "The New Jerusalem," a beautiful fantasy landscape painted with a rainbow of soft colors. Another I really like features a castle in the ocean with dolphin-like creatures in the front.

I found his CD covers featuring numerous exotic creatures fascinating. Finally, I loved his six full-page images featuring many whimsical creatures from several "Alice in Wonderland" books.

This book impressed me by its beauty and creativity!
As a fantasy art lover, I simply loved this book by the extreme beauty of its illustrations and the enormous dose of imagination Rodney put into it. Rodney is a magnific illustrator I admire with all my heart!
