Outstanding!
More than just a "coffee table" book, this is a fascinating journey into the world of "extreme science". The photography is outstanding and the commentary articulate, educational and approachable. A great "maiden voyage" from Peter Lane Taylor. I can't wait to see what he comes up with next!

Outstanding book by a new author
Taylor has done a superb job with his first book. Each chapter is captivating and full of new information. Instead of glossing over the sometimes difficult technical material which is discussed in this book, Taylor writes in a way that shares the depth and rigor of the research that is the subject of 'Science at the Extreme'. Both the writing and the photography in this book are engaging and instructional; and in each chapter, the reader's appetite for 'extreme science' grows stronger.

It is encouraging to see a book that does such an exceptional job of bringing together the popular culture ingredients common in National Geographic and the Discovery Channel, with the rigorous components of scientific research that exist at the National Science Foundation and in academia-at-large. 'Science at the Extreme' is just the kind of work that is needed to reinvigorate student interest in science in America, although it certainly does not appear to be the objective of the book. I have no doubt that high-schools and colleges will have to start offering 'Science at the Extreme' classes after students get a hold of this book.

I'm already looking forward to Taylor's next offering, although he has a tough act to follow since the bar has been set so high with 'Science at the Extreme'.

The only thing missing in 'Science at the Extreme' is an order form for buying large-size prints of Taylor's inspiring photographs...

The diving aspect
I was very much impressed with the chapter on cave diving and the excellent leadership of the WKPP. These guys and gals are a very select few diving to depths of 300ft with total dive time of 15 plus hours. The research of florida caves is extensive and the surface has only been scraped. The dedication and team development of the WKPP is beyond anything on the planet.

The Art of Compiler Design: Theory and Practice

Concerning Tom Pittman
Tom Pittman is an excellent teacher. Having his instruction in writing is the second best thing. He was a pioneer in microcomputers, having created one of the first compilers available. Strongly Recommended.

Very good book on compilers
This book is the one of the best I'v ever seen on compiler design. It one of the books that was written several years ago but very helpful. The language is not simple, but exact. I recommend it to all students and specialists who interested in compilers architecture.

There are all about the Larry games and utilities
First, there are conversations with Larry and Al Lowe.Second, there solutions for the Larry games, and at last there is a quiz. Tinny

I LOVE IT!!!!
This book is much more informative than *The Official Book of Leisure Suit Larry*. It doesn't give hints, it tells you exactly what to do. Deciphering hints is fun, but not when you're trying to relax on your summer vacation by playing what you thought would be an easy computer game. It also includes Larry's story of how be became to be the leisure suit wearing babe magnet god that he is. If you love Leisure Suit Larry, you'll love this book.

Educational and Exciting for Kids
The narration and sound effects are fabulous. Keeps little ones interested. Great facts are included however, they will never realize that they are learning.

the illustrations where incredible
The illustrations in this book where fabulous. The details where obviously pain-stakingly done. You can tell David Kiehm puts his heart and soul into his work. I can't wait to see more of his work!

Gurus demystified
In America we are in an era when we willingly hand over our wills, intelligence and spirit to the guru du jour. Self-inflated pompous snake oil salesmen who proclaim they have all the answers to the problems that confound us all. They are usually odd numbered (the 7 habits, the 5 learnings, the only one that was even numbered was the ten commmandments) repackaging of recycled obvious knowledge. Stephen Michael Peter Thomas (cleverly borrowing the first names of all the leading gurus) mimics their posturings in this enormously witty satire. The best send up of business I've ever read. You'll never be able to sit through a motivational conference with a straight face again.

I laughed! I cried! I was reorganized!
If you are a CEO or a business consultant or just an ordinary working schlumpf, you can read this book and find something USEFUL in it. Particularly if someone accidently leaves a winning lottery ticket in it as a bookmark. For instance, you could apply any of Stephen Michael Peter Thomas's Learnings or Teachings to your business situation and before you know it, you will be named in a major class action litigation or you will drive your business directly into bankruptcy. What this business genius has to say is that EFFECTIVE! I can honestly say that, by applying what I learned from this book, I have accumulated enough good time points that my sentence for malfeasance, fraud and impersonating a business person has been reduced by almost THREE WEEKS! Thank you, thank you, thank you Stephen Michael Peter Thomas

Solid update on the state of DSL (with photos too:-))
These guys wrote the book on DSL by creating the products, standards, processes, and applications for broadband in the copper loop. As active participants in the DSL Forum and other standards bodies, Starr, Sorbara, Cioffi, and Silverman have been there, done that. They know their stuff, and it shows in this detailed work on the state of the art of DSL in 2003. While not being shameful to get down into the nitty gritty of "Iterative Water-Filling" or "Duplex clear-down sequences", there is good coverage of the business side of DSL and simple questions like "What is Voice over DSL?" For marketers like me, there are great pictures and diagrams throughout the book about all of the stuff they are talking about! Overall, there's something in here for everyone, just don't feel bad if there's a section or twenty that you don't understand -- these guys are the geniuses who thought it all up!

The primary source
This book describes the state of the art by the folks defining it. Cioffi of Stanford developed much of the original technology, Sorbara and Starr have led the industry's key technical committee, and Silverman's been a leader in the DSL Forum. A good book by pros for pros, that goes far deeper than anything else published. 01/05/02

A Fascinating Look at the Origins of Important Languages
Until such time as someone tries to fill the shoes of Jean Sammet and write a new overview of programming languages (a major job, that!), the HOPL conferences are the main source of insight into the development of programming languages that, Sapir-Whorf style, have shaped the way we view programming and the problems we try to solve with a computer. Even if someone does take up that task, the HOPL conferences are invaluable, since they provide information straight from the people involved.

This volume of the proceedings of HOPL II is thus invaluable for the student of programming. HOPL I covered the main early languages (Algol 60, FORTRAN, COBOL, LISP, APT, BASIC...); HOPL II covers important languages of more recent vintage (Algol 68, Pascal, C, C++. more recent dialects of LISP). C.H. Lindsey's fine paper on the turbulent development of Algol 68, the best language you probably never used and a major influence on later languages, is worth the price of admission by itself.

Outstanding Collection of Resources
I have read many many computer jounrals about the history of computing. Very few resources have put the kind of time and effort that Thomas Bergin has done in his book. Along with assistant editor, RIck Gibson, both men do a fine job collecting the best of the best resources and giving it right to the public upfront. I wish Bergin can do another book or something Internet related because this is truly apart of computing that we do not really have much material on.

Reference you can depend on
I have this one and also the one for 6.0. I am waiting for the 7.0 version. This is one reference that you can depend on to have the information that you need.

A fast way to learn FrameMaker
This book is one of the clearest-written books I've read to date dealing with FrameMaker 5. I use both the Mac and Windows versions of FrameMaker and find this to be a ready reference guide, far better than the manuals accompanying the software.

SUPERB CASE HISTORIES OF WHAT PRACTICAL PASSION CAN DO
Many people have written that they like Tom Peters, but do not think that he has much to say that is new or different. Others criticize Peters for being changeable in his views. What these people miss is that Tom Peters is passionate about using passion for customers, employees, and everyone else to create great results for all of us. By awakening our passion, we will do more, we will try more, and we will succeed more often. In many ways, this book is much more important than IN SEARCH OF EXCELLENCE. A PASSION FOR EXCELLENCE clearly shows that passionate leadership about the right things sets a good example and the right tone for the organization. This book is helpful in that each section is meant to be read as a stand-alone, so you can go to the places that you did not feel very passionate about when you read IN SEARCH OF EXCELLENCE and get some good reinforcement about the value of passion in that area. A good companion piece if you need more passion and self-direction is Tony Robbins' AWAKEN THE GIANT WITHIN.

A must read
One of the best practical business texts around. Tom Peters is easily one of the most charismatic of the business preachers today, and the book fits right in line with his style

Very informative
I had a general idea about how dental implants work, but this book really educated me. If you're thinking about implants, this book will really help you understand what to expect. Easy to read and understand.

The only book you'll need to read on the subject
I have heard so much about dental implants in the past few years, with more people asking for them, and more dentists offering them. I have a crown that really should be replaced, and I wanted to get an implant. This seemed like the best book to read on the subject, based on the title, so I got a copy. It's everything the title says. Easy to understand, a quick read and a thorough explanation ... in language that I can understand. Thinking about implants? Read this book!
