Great Job in Review
Skidmore and Smith deliver a great historical review of the development of Latin America covering the span between the precolonial period and present time. These authors further engage in individualized analysis of some countries, though leave out some with great historic importance, like Bolivia. Overall however, this book serves as an outstanding reference guide to those interested in Latin American Studies.

CRISP AND CONCISE FACTUAL HISTORY
Great companion to any intro course of study of Latin American history. You will find easy to follow and clear accounts of the regions and their occastionally hostile beginnings, the political, social and religious climates as well as the traditions and beliefs handed down through the centuries.

There is much to appreciate in this book and I'd recommend it for anyone interested in delving deeper into this region which is rich in history and development.

A basic compilation of Latin American History
This is a great book for thoes who know little about Latin American and want to get both snipits as well as the general feel of the past 150 years of Latin American history. As a history major I highly recomend it.

Easy to understand, but not enough content
Peter Norton is tradirionally a great "teacher". His use of everyday expressions to explain complex technological terms, his choice of illustrative examples and his selection of graphical illustrations make the book easy to understand. If you are like me, seeking to take an exam on the subject, then you will need other materials to supplement the areas that were not included in the book. The areas of Windows 2000 Server that were covered will be my only source of future reference.

Peter Norton's complete guide to MS Windows 2000 server
Peter Norton shows the way to Windows 2000 networking. I found this book easy to refer, understand the concepts and install. The fine tuning and upkeep of the server has been extensively shown.

Dependable Norton
I have normally associated Peter Norton with his computer disk utilities which have certainly saved my bacon a few times. O f late he has turned to producing high quality reference books

I was extremely impressed with this publication. Having read the companion book Windows 2000 Professional, this book follows on nicely. I guess it is not a book for beginners but it leads a lot of us lapsed network jockeys through detail we had messed with but not fully comprehended. There is a very good sections on IIS which is little understood by most and one on the Internet which everyone thinks they understand. This book gets to the heart of Internet networks, though not as comprehensively dealt with as in his Windows 2000 Professional, it concentrates on the server aspects. Security and management of the server are covered well. This is a must read for Administrators. In fact he and his co authors seems to cover everything very nicely with as much nitty gritty to make it a reference book to be held in the ready.

All in all this is a very good book for those familiar with networking but not so familiar with Windows 2000 Server. There is also enough detail for newbies to get a good understanding .

The price is very reasonable.

The Wisdom of the Popes: A Collection of Statements of the Popes Since Peter on a Variety of Religious and Social Issues

Good reference source
If Mr. Craughwell had just given a collection of statements from the popes over the last 2000 years this book would be great. If one is looking for a collection of statements by the popes then buy this book. The problem that I have with the book is the introduction/commentary that Mr. Craughwell offers at the start of many of the chapters, especially the commentary at start of the chapter on the Mass. In the prior chapters he showed how the popes have always helped the Church understand in a new way the truths that have been revealed to the Church since the begining. But in the chapter on the Mass he how the post Vatican II Mass has been a mistake by Paul VI and has led to a decline in the Church. I personally don't think he is right but that is another matter. So my suggestion is buy the book and skip the commentary/ introductions.

This book belongs in every Catholic home.
Papal proclamations, encyclicals, and meditations have fathered and fostered what is Western culture. Thomas Craughwell has compiled a splendorous and thematic bouquet of the spiritual and political positions of the Popes throughout the last two millennia. His masterful creation serves as a roadmap for anyone who wishes to trace the true influence of Catholicism upon the formation of the modern world.

From the stalwart simplicity of Peter and the prosaic acclaimations of the goodness of God penned by Clement I, down to the more recent and politically volatile legacies of Paul XI and Pius the XII, Mr. Craughwell artfully crafts an enthralling, intriguing, and inspiring legacy of the Pontiffs that will undoubtedly become a standard household reference for all Catholic families.

Little Book with Big Story
In this attractively illustrated tale, beluga whales must swim south before the sea ices over. They face dangers from the ice as well as from hungry polar bears. We learn why beluga whales have been called "canary of the sea" and why the protruding forehead is useful. This is a simply told story, but young and old readers will learn a thing or two about these interesting creatures.

Dolphin's First Day: The Story of a Bottlenose Dolphin
Published in Hardcover by Soundprints (1994)
Authors: Peter Thomas, Steven J. Petruccio, and Kathleen Weidner Zoehfeld
Amazon base price: $5.00

Nicely written, Kid-friendly Dolphin story
This is a story about a newborn Bottleneck dolphin's first day in the ocean. It is nicely written and illustrated but the kid friendly story line takes away slightly from the factual information. Even so, both my children (2 year-old and 4 year-old) and I really enjoy this book and others in this "Smithsonian Ocean Series" especially Manatee Winter.

Expensive, but a lot of useful information
A CD-Rom jammed with articles from EXECUTIVE EXCELLENCE. I actually got my copy as a bonus for subscribing a couple of years ago. Many of the articles are interesting, but they are all quite short, almost MTV-ish. This seems to be the preferred style for this publication. If you are a fan of Warren Bennis, or one of the writers who regularly contribute to that publication, this is a good way to pick up some new material from your favored writer. The articles are on a variety of topics, which means that there will probably be something for everyone with an interest in this subject, but by the same token, there will be a lot that won't interest you. The CD includes a search engine that is workable. I benefitted from the magazine and the CD, but they didn't set my world on fire.

FASCINATING AND ENGAGING BIOGRAPHIES
This book provides fascinating sketches of four prominent individuals who lived during the time of England's King Charles I and the British Commonwealth. Two are Royalists, and two are Puritans/Commonwealthmen which makes for a balanced book. I actually learned a lot about the political issues at stake during the English Civil War through reading these four fascinating sketches. Rowse writes in a witty and engaging style which makes this book a pleasure to read.

Simple to Read, Informative enough for basics
This book is a really easy to read book as it has short notes, many pictures, less wordings, and suggestions for each different wine.

Like the title, it lives up to the name. Too often, our problem is choosing the right wine for minimum dollar we pay. This book makes things much simpler. It offers the very basics of wine making and appreciation, and also goes right to the things we need and want to know. Also, how to prevent looking like a fool in a restaurant when you are trying to impress your date.

All in all, I think this is a good book to look at if you want one to impress people with the wine you bought from the grocer, but if you want to impress people with knowledge of wine, find a thicker and more detailed book.

Intellectual Property in the New Technological Age
This book is an excellent text dealing with multiple aspects of American intellectual property law. As a Canadian law student I found its approach of using first principles to introduce readers to the basics of intellectual property law very useful. From the first principles of copywright, trademark and patent law the book proceeds to give an insightful exposition of the developments of each of these areas of law in response to recent developments in the sciences. While some attention is paid to biotechnology in the patent section of the book, most of the work focusses on the impact of developments in intellectual property law as a result of information technology. Not only is this book timely but it also gives a very in depth analysis of these timely issues that I have not come across in other texts on the subject. I have just completed my LL.B at an excellent Canadian Law school. I specialised almost entirely in intellectual property law and found this to be my favourite text. Not just amongst my IP courses but amongst all the courses that it was my pleasure to take. If you are interested in IP and you want an understanding of it based Utilitarian first principles this book is an excellent resourse.
