From a Recent Still Convert
A few of my favorite painters are contemporaries of Still, so I saw it as my duty to see the Hirschhorn exhibition. Well, I picked a dead day and had the show to myself and simply put I am now a fan. The book is great and David Anfam's addition to the book is especially enlightening about the work of Still.

From a new Clifford Still fan:
I am a painter who has largely avoided Clifford Still but this book has turned me into a great admirer. Particulary influential was the contribution by David Anfam, the art historian who was responsible for the magnificent, award-winning Mark Rothko catalogue raisonne. Anfam's essay is insightful, far-reaching, beautifully written with poetic underpinnings, a pleasure to read. All you'll ever need to know about Clifford Still, his work, and his place in art history is covered in this essay. The color plates are also wonderful and, even as reproductions, offer a great chance to appreciate the paintings.

Clyfford Still
Clyfford Still is one of the giant figures of the art world and this book puts his paintings in a proper perspective. The book contains many color reproductions of his large non-objective canvases. Still himself wrote the book and gives us a very good insight into his life and thinking process. He discusses what went into his paintings and how his unique canvas numbering system worked absent dates and titles to identify his work. It is also a journey through his body of work. His paintings were skillfully balanced with positive and negative spaces and his unparalleled use of color is well documented. This book is a must for any art lover in general and for students of American art in particular. I liked this book not only for the well reproduced paintings in color but also because it let's us into the painter's mind to get a glimps of his true genius.

PANZERS IN COLOR
I've read many books about the panzers in WWII. They have many useful information inside them. But they all had old black&white photos and some of them were really bad. But this book is great. It doesn't have so many information, the written things are known by many WWII fans. But what makes this book a 5 star treasure is the pictures. Who doesn't want to see Tigers, Panthers, King Tigers, Jagdpanthers and many more in colorful high quality pictures. The photos are taken from museums and collectors all around the world. When you are looking at the pictures you'll feel the real power of the Panther's 75mm gun and smell its gasoline and hear the roaring engine.

Gem of a Book
German Tanks of World War II in Color is not an exhaustive study nor does it try to be. However, weighing in at only 96 pages, it contains a surprising amount of information. The book is organized into four chapters: light tanks, medium tanks, heavy tanks and support vehicles. All of the main panzers and armored fighting vehicles are discussed as well as their variants. The text is readable and informative. Text boxes add depth to the book by discussing tank anatomy, panzer division anatomy, weapon definitions, and color schemes. What truly makes this book unique are the color photographs of restored vehicles from museums and private collections around the world. The photo on the front cover is indicative of the eye-candy that awaits you inside. Recommended!

A great value.
This book packs a lot of information into its 96 pages. It's possible to find books on German Armor that have more detail, but not at this price. Brief but useful development histories are complemented by scores of high quality color photographs. Each of the Panzer series (I through VI) is featured, including most of the important variants (Tank destroyers and self-propelled artillery pieces). There is even a chapter on amored cars, halftracks, and reconnaissance vehicles. The text is good, but it is the photographs that set this book apart. Vintage snaps are coupled with shots of restored vehicles from museums and private collections around the world. I would recommend this book to modelers and history buffs alike.

A Triumph of the American Spirit
If three entrepreneurs from Chicago can create a smart product and at the same time beat corporate USA (and in some respect the corporate world) with such a magnificently creative idea, my hat goes of to the Spirit of the American way. I've been to many of the pubs on the CD over the years and treasure the fact that so many others can experience what I did with a few strokes of their keyboard. If you like adventure, travel smart and buy this CD-ROM.

Outstanding!
A wonderful romp through the pubs of the U.K. I was feeling a little buzz from just reading about all that beer. I feel better prepared for my trip next month to London now that I've read this inspired CD.

outstanding pubsmanship!
This guide gives you an in-depth picture of historic inns and pubs all over Britain. I particularly like the detailed information on prices, menus, accommodations, and routes to the sites, all tailored to your interests. The photography is supurb, and the witty, engaging commentary alone would be worth the price of the CD. As a travelogue, a practical guide, and a mini-tour through British history, it's a delight!

Bible background
Anne Catherine Emmerich gives the "everyday" happenings in the lives of those she "observed". I thought this book was a lovely read, and give me renewed interest in the Bible itself. As with all her books, it is like reading the full story as opposed to the headlines. Because Anne Catherine was a nun, it is often supposed that this, and indeed all her books, are only for Catholics. However, for Jewish people, it gives a most profound knowledge of the rich Jewish culture two thousand years ago, and for Christians, it fills in the blanks that Mathew, Mark, Luke and John left - they probably didn't realise that two thousand years later, their readers would not know what a Jewish wedding was like (Mary's dress and hair do left me breathless!). After reading the Chapter of Christmas, you too will wonder how Santa Claus managed to take over this wonderful event. I have also read the four volumes of the Life and Passion of Our Lord. Easter has never been the same for me.

NOTHING in her books contradicts the bible in any way. It just brings it to life.

it ws Grace from God to even be allowed to read this book!
It was as if God let me get to read this book: whether the visions are accurte or not even the idea of such amazing events taking place is like heaven and Gods presence. This book hit me so sublimely and wondeful...I felt Grace reading her words...so privleged.

Vision of the life of Mary as mother of Christ and Church.
Miss Emmerich relates in minute and often beautiful detail her visions of the life of Mary, from her conception to her assumption. Although not necessarily historical, the visions are a benefit to meditation on the events that we do know to have taken place, and help transport the reader back to Palestine in the first century.

Absolutely spectacular collection of photographs
Most of my several thousand volume library consists of serious books, works of literature, literary criticism, philosophy, history, theology, political science, and so on. But I also have a shelf or two devoted to "fun" books, books that I pick up and just lose myself in having fun. This is one of my favorite fun books. Not a masterpiece. Probably won't be in print twenty years from now. But the photographs are spectacular! And in just under 300 pages, almost every major city and structure of Europe has been photographed from the air. It is not merely the famous sights and buildings that makes this such a fun book, but some striking photographs of relatively unknown features. For instance, one of the most stunning photographs for me is what would appear to be a gigantic green field in Denmark that has been punctuated by a series of large housing circles, each cut off from one another, and each surrounded by the same green field.

The text has been provided by noted travel writer Jan Morris. The book is largely structured by starting with Italy and proceeding clockwise through the entire European continent, ending with Greece, Romania, and Turkey.

I really can whole heartedly recommend this book to anyone except those who don't like to look at anything. But if you have any interest in the world, in traveling, in Europe, in history, in photography, or in just having fun looking at awesome photos, this book will prove to be an utter delight.

Inexpensive Grandeur and Glory
I stumbled upon this title in a competitor's bookstore and was astonished that I hadn't read a review anywhere. With a 1998 imprint and Jan Morris as the author of the text, it doesn't seem like it should be an obscure tome, yet even here on Amazon.com, only one other person has reviewed it!

The photos are designed to provoke a sense of wonder and awe in the reader/viewer, and they succeed aesthetically, emotionally, and psychologically. From the rock of Gilbralter to a dense set of "potato row" houses in Copenhagen; from snowfields near the Arctic circle to Turkey--it's all here, images snapped from blimps, airplanes, helicopters, almost any method by which one might be "over" Europe.

One will not be able to glimpse most of these sites from comparable vantage points on a typical trek across the continent unless one plans to do so in a biplane. The images here are unusual in their breadth and majesty. ... The text is literate and fun. Buy it and marvel.

Not just another coffee table book!
If you regard this book as just another coffee table book you aren't even half right. This is one of the best photo books I have ever seen. The pictures are outstanding. Nearly every photo takes you to the alter of the church, the edge of the cliff, or the gate to the castle. Not only is it a photo book, but a great travel book. These aren't just descriptions of what to see, but beautiful pictures showing you what you will want to see when you get there. You won't even need to take a camera or change for postcards-- the best pictures are right here. Get this book before you plan your vacation to Europe.

Surgical Exposures in Orthopaedics: The Anatomic Approach

A must have reference...
For the busy orthopaedic surgeon and resident, this text should be "required". Hoppenfeld accomplishes the unenviable task of providing a text with concise explanations of surgical exposure with excellent illustrations. Relevant anatomy is clearly conveyed to the surgeon performing the dissection. In addition, the text serves well as a five to ten minute refresher prior to the operation at hand.

An Orthopaedic Bible
A clear, concise and beautifully illustrated hardback book. I cannot see how this book can become outdated which is why I forked out the small fortune to buy it! No regrets though- this book really is worth every penny/cent

simply the best
those who are blest with a perfect recall of anatomy do not need this book but the rest will find its thorough yet simple guide to surgical approaches an invaluble aid to safe practice.

Things Hidden Since the Foundation of the World

brilliant
A profound and well-documented book about the origin of religion, its meaning and use in society and causes for the declining interest in religion in our time. The system Girard explained at its best, but not as readable as some of his other books on the subject.

reorienting the x-y-z of the occident
This book takes the form of a dialogue between Girard and two psychiatrists, Jean-Michel Oughourlian and Guy Defort. If you are already familiar with Girard's work concerning the relationship between mimetic desire and violence, sacrificial rites and scapegoat, then you will find this book indispensible. If you have an opinion -- pro or con -- about Christianity, you will want to read this book. The title of the book is a quote from Mathew 13, 35, and not without purpose. Here, Girard discusses in depth the nature of Christianity, the most sacrificial religion, in terms of the theories he's been formulating over the years. The whole business of murder and deification permeates much of primitive Mediterranean religions -- Abel and Cain, Romulus and Remus, etc -- and the sacrifice of Christ and subsequent deification follows the same pattern of displacing mob guilt. Biblical exegesis, certainly, but much more than that. This book and Girard's work as a whole helps one to understand above and beyond the question of either sentiment or faith why Christianity as a religion still holds sway in this secular age, and from where it derives its staying power. A real milestone in intellectual detective work, it will cause you to hear a wake-up call. And in stereo, too, if you read also his good friend Michel Serres' book ROME: The Book of Foundations.

A creative, fascinating trip inside the works of civilization
It has been now about 20 years since I first read the original version of this fascinating work, as it was published in France. Reading it again today I still have the same feeling of witnessing a major breakthrough in our understanding of thelink between human nature, civilization and religion, a landmark of the highest caliber. Only now can I detect its influence in the French intellectual establishment - the 70s being not very favorable to a work that sheds an unexpectedly new and enhancing light on Christianity (yet certainly more unsettling for the religious establishment, I believe.) As a scientific, I was striken at first by the simplicity and the precision of the mimetic theory and its startling ramifications into the phenomenons of victimization mechanisms, sacralization, religion and foundations of civilization - all of it displaying a clarity and logic that I was more accustomed to find in "hard" sciences, I must say... I advise newcomers to Girard to start with this book which is the most synthetic. A must read for all modern westerners.

Angry, Bored, Confused: A Citizen Handbook of American Politics

Consistent Kryzanek
Dr. Michael Kryzanek has a well established scholarly reputation in comparative politics and government, with an emphasis on Latin American area studies. Now it seems that his preparation and intelligence have resulted in a tremendously honest and necessary American Politics text that urges it readers to think carefully and profoundly about the pluralistic elements of every aspect of American politics.

Whether one approaches an understanding from the left or the right Kryzanek gives you the opportunity to educate yourselves ideologically and recognize that many of the facts that are used to justify conflicting political positions are the same even as they disagree. He convincingly involves his readers as one who is attempting to "objectively" explain the attributes and vicissitudes of American politics. And he does a remarkably good job at it!

Very Useful
An easy reference to the major structural issues in US politics. The writing in consise, precise and the information is presented in a very easily digestible style.

The Basic Essentials of Weather Forecasting

Authors: Michael Hodgson and Thomas Todd

Practical, Informative
"Basic Essentials: Weather Forecasting" is a practical guide to weather as it relates to its most important aspect to humans: what its going to do next. It is a nice blend of conveying "weather 101" without losing sight of what it might be telling us. Chpt 1, for example, follows up telling us what causes storms, lighting and tornadoes with some practical safety advice. Similarly, in Chpt 2, we learn what the different types of clouds are and then how to tell when the weather is getting better or worse by reading cloud formations.

There is a hidden gem in Chpt 5 (subtitled: Semireliable Forecasting from Legends and Lore). In it, 2 dozen weather "wives' tales" of various usefulness are examined.

Overall, this is ideal for campers, hikers, boaters, amateur naturalists and scouts. Also recommended, Instant Weather Forecasting by Alan Watts.

Basic Essentials: Weather Forecasting
I thought this book was very well written. It gives you good advice and knowledge about weather forecasting and what to look for when doing so. I am studying to be a weather observer and this book has been a good reference book, I take it to work with me as I watch the weather on my driving job. Thank You for the opportunity to review this book.
