good, yet confusing
I think that the french version of Night Flight was good, but confusing because of all the detail given. To understand it fully you must have a high french vocabulary. It was meaningful and fun to read.

A Definitive Biography of Thomas Merton
Mott has carefully researched thousands of documents to come up with a biography of Merton that is both scholarly and engaging. For years, Monica Furlong's biography of Merton was my favorite, but Mott has surpassed her work largely because of his access to materials that were not available before. Perhaps the most popular example of this was Merton's romantic relationship with the student nurse from Louisville. Mott's honest and objective view of this crucial event in Merton's life is masterfully studied and composed in the tone of a good friend who won't accept facile answers as truth. In this sense, Mott does more than write about Merton, but frequently engages the Merton he has found with the curiosity any fan of Merton's would understand, and a depth few of Merton's biographers have achieved.

A concise and well thought out guide
As a new resident of Washington D.C., this book, "Short Bike Rides: Washington D.C.," has become for my family an invaluable introduction of the area's numerous bike trails and routes. Each route is introduced with a short synopsis of its main attractions and challenges, followed by precise yet easy to follow directions. The book was obviously well researched.

Art, sex, power and money - what more can you ask for ?
This is my "all time favorite" book. As the cover review says, you will enjoy this novel - unless money, art, power and sex bore you. I have read it a dozen or more times. I can open it at any page and find myself unable to put it down. I won't take it out of my house in case I loose it, although, thanks to Amazons' out of print service, I now have a second copy.

Michael Thomas, with his background in art and banking has written a most wonderful novel linking these two subjects. The banking and Wall Street angle is ruthless and cynical, whilst some of the passages describing the (imaginary) Watteau paintings, move me almost to tears whenever I read them. So compelling was his, or rather his character Nick Revery's, praise of Watteau that I journeyed to Berlin, principally, to see "Pilgrimage to the island of Cythera" in the Charlottenburg.

I can't understand why books as wonderful as this can be out of print. Although written in 1982, it would be accurate and prophetic if written today, such was Michael Thomas' foresight.

Very useful, even after graduate school.
This was the book I used in my graduate consulting school in Arthur D. Little which was probably the most read of all my books, up to this time. I still used it as my reference now that I'm back here in Manila as a Financial executive and adopted it as my class textbook in my Strategic Management class.

What goes into the making of elegant and expressive verse
Compiled and edited by Harry Thomas, Talking With Poets comprises unique selection of interviews with five very different, but highly notable poets: Robert Pinsky, Seamus Heaney, Philip Levine, Michael Hofmann, and David Ferry. A deep and moving examination into lives, motivations, and how life experiences flow into written words on the page, Talking With Poets is an enthusiastically recommended look into what goes into the making of elegant and expressive verse, and of these five men who are particularly gifted in such creations.

Trinitarian Theology East and West: St. Thomas Aquinas-St. Gregory Palamas
Published in Paperback by Holy Cross Orthodox Press (1986)
Author: Michael J. Fahey
Amazon base price: $2.45
Average review score:

a gem in the field of theology
Although this is a thin booklet, only 43 pages, it is to the point, scholarly, and balanced. If you're looking for a dual between to great theologians, this isn't it. Both Fahey and Meyendorff are faithful to their respective traditions without slinging theological mud. To give you an idea of its contents, I'll quote Maximos Aghiorgoussis' forward: "Our theme deals with ecumenical problems between East and West. Faith in the Holy Trinity is both the main mark of Christianity and the main problem in the relations between Eastern and Western Christendom. The Eastern and Western approaches to the doctrine of the Trinity go back to the patristic period. The entire patristic tradition of the East has a "personalistic" approach...whereas in the West St. Augustine authored the so-called "psychological" approach. This difference in approach is one of the main theological factors which played- and continues to play- and important role in the "estrangement" between Eastern and Western Christianity. [In this essay] two contemporary experts in these differing approaches examine the issue. On the Eastern side, the focus is placed upon St. Gregory Palamas. On the Western side, the focus is placed on the doctrine of St.Thomas Aquinas."

This is one of those gems that you are so thankful to find in the field of theological writings. It's a bit technical, but it's worth the struggle if you are just beginning and very illuminating if you're familar with the issues, since it poses the question from the point of view of St. Palamas; an often overlooked theologian from the often overlooked Eastern Church.
