Fascinating insight into Lyon's character
Christopher Phillips provides the reader with a fascinting insight into the character of Nathaniel Lyon. Rarely in reading a biography has the reader come away with such a clear and precise understanding as to what the central character's personality was really like.
By providing this insight into Lyon's character the reader can clearly understand what motivated Lyon to take the actions he took in the troubled 1860's in Missouri. Lyon was a not very likable individual, He brought a zealot's zeal to virtually everything he believed in or did regardless of the conseqences. In the end this zeal brought about his own death. A great read...two thumbs up.

Worth Twice The Price
This book is both sensible and inspiring. Of particular value is the considerate and respectful focus upon ordinary landscapes in addition to well known, global sites with established powerful devic activity. Angel Falls and Ayers Rock, etc. are covered very well but Mr. Altman gives equal time to wildflowers and trees encountered in the urban Brooklyn landscape. A wide variety of earth based cultures are included for consideration of belief structures, myths, and energetic relationship to the devic realms. I'd love to buy this one for everybody I know - novice, scholar, and full throttle green men and women in the making.

Outstanding scholarship. A wonderful read!
"A Dynamite read" Colonel David Hackworth: NEWSWEEK.

"Beautifully written...This masterful collection is for anyone who appreciates good writing and loves journalism. It is a moving account of our republic that honors the best in our profession." Edward Barnes:TIME.

I could not agree more with these quotes from the Oxford University Press edition of DISPATCHES FROM THE FRONT: A History of the American War Correspondent. From typewriter patriots to frontline poets, radio microphones and satelitte links, this book is a stunning illustrated history of the American War Correspondent. I found it facinating, especially the tone and character of the press coverage that has shaped the nation's understanding of itself. Nathaniel Lande is a graceful and insightful writer, a scholar who has written one of the most facinating books with riveting accounts from Ten American Wars. It is more than "national snapshots" of the world and America on the home front and front lines. I felt every musket fire and missile blast from Lexington to Bagdad. I think readers will be particularly moved, as I was, with the selected dispatches filed by Ernest Hemingway, Ernie Pyle and Sydney Schanberg, who with more than sixty other correspondents took me inside American's Wars as they happened.

A First Rate Book
"DISPATCHES FROM THE FRONT is a first-rate book about the men and women who reported the gallantry, the raw courage and the honor of America's wars. Nathaniel Lande is both a teacher and a scholar in his vivid account of these correspondents, who became opinion makers helping shape an emerging nation." William Friday: President Emeritus

Elixir of Life Manuscripts (The Centenary Edition of the Works of Nathaniel Hawthorne, Vol Xiii)
Published in Hardcover by Ohio State Univ Pr (Txt) (1978)
Authors: Nathaniel Hawthorne, Edward H. Davidson, Claude M. Simpson, and Bill Ellis
Amazon base price: $98.95

Essential For Hawthorne Readers
The Elixir Of Life Manuscripts include Septimius Felton; or The Elixir Of Life, The Dolliver Romance, Dr. Grimshawe's Secret, and The Ancestral Footstep. The first three very directly characterize an archetype for scientists that show up throughout other works by Hawthorne. The theme of the Ancestral Footstep, which is also interwoven as a plot in the other three works, surrounds a family secret which either leads the scientist figure to the discovery of the Elixir of Life, or entitles him to an inheritance. It is significant that none of these works were ever completed -- however, all are complete and distinct stories. Hawthorne usually planned out a plot so well that he did not need more than one draft to complete a romance. He clearly struggled with the themes of these works, since he never satisfied himself with either of his four drafts. I highly recommend these works as reading material for those who enjoy Hawthorne, or those who are interested in the study of the scientist or seeker in Hawthorne's works.

This is the best children's Bible on the market!
We are very impressed with the pictures, text, and brief discussion ideas at the end of each story. The accounts of the Bible stories are Biblically correct. Toddlers show great interest in the book and often select it for their own independent browsing. Many of the popular children's Bible songs are portrayed in the pictures. This is an inpirational, educational, and fun book!

Great presentation of information and ideas!
This book was great for information and ideas in the study of early American women, especially those living in Puritan societies. The presentation of literature, such as the Scarlet Letter, in this context was especilly effective.
