Lewis and Clark: Leading America West (Great Lives)

Great book for young peoele
This is a highly readable, brief account of the journey of Lewis and Clark, America's premier explorers. The duo set out in 1804 at the behest of President Jefferson to see if in fact there was a "Northwest Passage" (waterway) to the West Coast, and to explore the sorrounding regions. Most fascinating are the tales of encounters with various Indian tribes, as well as the weather related hardships endured by the Corps of Discovery. Reads nicely for young people or as a general introduction to the subject for adults. The book could have used some more illustrations and maps, but otherwise nicely researched.

Great
Library Journal's review of this guide: "Combining encyclopedic coverage of destinations with loads of practical information and atlas-type maps, the series illuminates the wonders of nature but emphasizes the peculiarity of a place's people and their folklore."

A dream come true to have a set of book with simultaneous information on surgical pathology and cytopathology. It is indeed very helpful when you are studying any topic of surgical pathology with side be side information on cytopathology. The quality of pictures are very good. The material in the book is excellent. Problem Seeking: An Architectural Programming Primer
Published in Paperback by Amer Inst of Architects (1987)
Authors: William Pena, Steven Parshall, and Kevin Kelly
Amazon base price: $21.95
Used price: $15.99
Average review score:

The "Bible" of Architectural Programming
If you're interested in architectural programming--defining a project's requirements prior to designing--then this book is a "must read." Why "Problem Seeking?" Pena explains that since design is problem solving, programming is, "the search for sufficient information to clarify, to understand, to state the problem."
Part One of the book is a primer, focusing on theory and principles. Part Two is the "how to do it" section, providing details and examples. The book is based on decades of real-life project examples from one of the most experienced architectural programming teams in the nation.

The core idea is profound: Separating programming (analysis) from design (synthesis), brings tremendous clarity to the design problem. Focusing first on the goals, facts and concepts, then translating those into quantifiable needs (independent of the solution!) facilitates decision-making and encourages innovation.

Reading this book won't make you an architectural programmer, but it provides an essential foundation for anyone involved in a building project--architects and owners alike. The book is used as a text book in architecture schools across the country, and is required reading before taking the Architectural Registration Exam. A 9 out of 10 only because it will leave you yearning for more.

School Days

You can smell the chalk.
This title is one of the better Abbeville 'Recollectable' series. Designed like a school book, the cover is a slate, the title spread a desk with the name carved in it, the credits and contents spread are printed on an open ring-binder, with a Bazooka gum wrapper included near the bottom of the page.

The rest of the nicely designed pages are a mixture of collage and still-life photograpy. The authors have dug up hundreds of items from the past (mostly thirties to sixties) starting with very early Primers and going through the school grades and activities to the all-important Prom Night. Oh and don't forget the spread of film posters featuring 'Blackboard Jungle', 'Junior Prom', 'Campus Honeymoon' etc.

If you were in school any time from 1930 onwards this excellent book will be pure nostalgia.

Now you can put Mary Ann's pigtail in the inkwell!
