Stunning compilation of photos with eloquent text
This book was singularly instrumental in putting me deep into the heart of the Civil Rights Movement. Being born in the early sixties, I was not old enough to have seen the daily television and newspaper images of what was happening to an oppressed segment of people. This book fills that void powerfully. Going through page by page, Steven Kasher's fine writing style captures the series of events, which are by turns riveting and disturbing. It constantly dawns on one that these horrifying things happened at a not-so-distant time, in the middle of the 20th century. One expects to read of these crimes against humanity in the dark ages - and it is a sad, disquieting reminder that times change slowly. Anyone who is interested in a major chunk of American history should invest in this book. Undoubtedly, as well it would serve as an excellent high school textbook, because it is amply illustrated and written with straightforward clarity, and therefore would make a much more lasting impression on young students than a pale discourse summed tidily up in a dull history book. I thank Kasher for researching, writing and providing this invaluable book; I am all the wiser, albeit the sadder, for having read it.

Excellent Book for the Wards
This is an excellent book for pediatric residents and medical students in pediatric rotations. The book is organized by symptom e.g. abdominal pain, chronic cough, and it provides a comprehensive list of differential diagnosis, flow charts for diagnosis, as well as short discussions on most common diseases associated with that particular symptom. A must for pediatric rounds.

We don't care; we don't have to care - we're Exxon.
A look at what really happens when corporations rule the world. Dr. Picou explains the difference between natural and man-made disasters in terms of the social impacts they have. He presents the Exxon Valdez disaster from several angles, and takes the reader from the series of poor decisions and budget cutbacks that preceded the event through the ecological catastrophe to the legal and social morass that followed. This book is a must for anyone who wants to understand the challenges we face in an era of corporate globalization.

Inside Unix
Published in Paperback by New Riders Publishing (1996)
Authors: Chris Hare, Emmett Dulaney, George Eckel, Steven Lee, Lee Ray, William Steen, and New Riders Development Group
Amazon base price: $40.00
Average review score:

One of the best UNIX books ever written.
This is one of the best UNIX books ever written. Period. It's too bad that New Riders never bothered to update it, as it is kind of dated nowadays. It is still very useful, and not a waste by any means, but an update would be nice. It hits on every major aspect of UNIX and has examples. I have found things in there that I didn't find even in the Nemeth books. This belongs on every UNIX Sysadmin's bookshelf. The next time I ask for some Unix and tech books at work, I will see if this or other used copies are still available and try to get them to buy it. I don't want to take mine to work because I don't want to damage it, and because it is just too big and bulky to carry back and forth.

Oh, and you have to love that cover art.....

Justifiable Pride
This is a wonderful story about a prisoner of war during World War II. What an experience for this man to live through and I got to live through it too with his words. The conditions were horrific, it is surprising that any of our soldiers survived. I could picture myself crawling on the ground with the weapon attempting to follow orders and to look up and find a gun at my head. This is a real page turner. Difficult to put down.

Mark Lilla and Ronald Dworkin together???
Can't wait to see this one. Lilla and Dworkin is like a collaboration between Ken Vandermark and Wynton Marsalis.
