THE END OF TIME
This is the thrid and final book in a often detailed and sometime glossy overview of the last decade of the Doctor - the 1980's. The book chronicles the end of Tom Baker as the 4th Doctor and the rise of Peter Davidson as the 5th and the decline and fall of the series with Colin Baker (who in my book was never given the chance or the material to really shine) and Sylvester McCoy. The books gives behind the scenes details into the stories, the people, public intrest (and sometimes disinterest), as well as ending chapters on all the merchandise (with layouts and cool pictures) produced during the 1980's. As a whole the entire collection is a must for every Doctor Who fan, on it's own, the material is solid, well written and worth the price. The only downside perhaps is that the material can get a bit thin in places, and sometimes leaving wanting to know more. But this is not very often. Pick up the 1960's first to really get the full effect.

Dominator Flashback
I have always heard a great deal about the B-32 from my father who was a B-32 flight engineer during WW-II. But due to the low production numbers there is not that much out there on it. Getting this book for dad for christmas was a great gift. He enjoyed it very much and the accuracy of the information was right on. This book is a rare find and a great gift for those lookin for info on a little known aircraft.

Expensive, but a lot of useful information
A CD-Rom jammed with articles from EXECUTIVE EXCELLENCE. I actually got my copy as a bonus for subscribing a couple of years ago. Many of the articles are interesting, but they are all quite short, almost MTV-ish. This seems to be the preferred style for this publication. If you are a fan of Warren Bennis, or one of the writers who regularly contribute to that publication, this is a good way to pick up some new material from your favored writer. The articles are on a variety of topics, which means that there will probably be something for everyone with an interest in this subject, but by the same token, there will be a lot that won't interest you. The CD includes a search engine that is workable. I benefitted from the magazine and the CD, but they didn't set my world on fire.

Gabby
This is a fable about a Furry Eyeful, an imaginary creature who lives in the forest with others of her kind. This little creature loves to talk and has alot to say. However, her constant babbling (which includes interruptions and speaking at inappropriate times) is driving her friends crazy (and driving them away from her). She becomes sad and lonely until she meets a special friend who listens, understands and explains.

This book takes a very gentle and compassionate approach to excessive and inappropriate talking. The over-talkative child's feelings (rather than social consequences) are the focus of the story. The book offers the child suggestions and solutions when talking has become "too much of a good thing" and is out of control. This book has taken a difficult childhood issue and has dealt with it well.

An interesting perspective on five literary greats
Thanks for scholars like Nicholas Delbanco who hunt down biographical details that enrich our knowledge of famous authors lives. Here is a book that offers a savory meal for the literary gourmet. Henry James liked donuts. Stephen Crane chain smoked. Conrad the English stylist spoke with a thick Polish accent. Ford Madox Ford embellished his recollections with untruths. H. G. Wells treated offers of help with cocky independence.

The author contends that for a certain interval these men associated with and admired each others literary accomplishments. "South of London in 1900, a galaxy of talent assembled that beggars in accomplishment anything the English language has since produced." He provides quotations and photographs that demonstrate social intercourse between the big five. Between the initial overview and the concluding summary, three chapters provide respectively a view of Stephen Crane on a visit to England to meet the other masters of ficti! onal prose, a study of the collaboration between Ford Madox Ford and Joseph Conrad, and an examination of one of English literature's most famous disputes - James vs. Wells.

I found the book informative and interesting and recommend it to any admirer of any of the five writers singularly or in combination. About those we admire our curiosity is insatiable. Did Shakespeare like his eggs over easy or sunny side up? We have his Hamlet, his Lear, isn't that enough? Some might say no. We have Crane's "Open Boat", Conrad's "Heart of Darkness", Ford's *Good soldier, James' *Ambassadors, Wells' *Time Machine*. Still, it's natural to inquire about the virtues, quirks, and foibles of their creators. *Group Portrait* gives us a taste of the traits that rounds out these illustrious authors.

A sad epilogue to which Mr. Delbanco refers in his lead chapter is that this literary summer was so brief. Crane died in 1900. Eventually the other associations wither! ed. By 1906 the friendship between Conrad and Ford had coo! led. *Boon* published in 1915 dissolved Wells' ties to James with its ridicule of the latter. For a while there was Camelot albeit a loose confederacy of brilliant writers. A genius needs a tough ego to sustain him for the long haul to fortune and fame. An alternate lesson from *Group portrait, perhaps one not intended, but nevertheless patent, is that collaboration must eventually give way to ego.

Understanding Global Disorder
This edited book, which is composed of six chapters, provides a very nice discussion of the international or global political economy in the post-Cold War era. It is not a book for everyone, though: most of the chapters are written from a "critical" (as in Critical Theory) perspective, and some are extremely abstract and abtruse. Still, for those who wish to get a deeper, theoretical understanding of globalization and the world economy, this is a book for you. One of the most interesting aspects of the book, which is reflected in several of the chapters, is the discussion of how Karl Polanyi's ideas about the 'double movement' can be used to analyze the global political economy today. James Rosenau's chapter, in this regard, is particularly interesting. Other contributors, all of whom are prominent scholars in the field, include Bjorn Hettne, Robert Cox, Stephen Gill, Kees van der Pijl and Yoshikazu Sakamoto. Cox's chapter entitled "Critical Political Economy" is especially useful as an introduction to the relationship between Critical Theory and IPE.

This book is an excellent overview of the birds of Iowa.
The Iowa Breeding Bird Atlas presents the first detailed state-wide survey results for breeding birds. Detailed species accounts are provided for more than 150 birds known to breed in Iowa. These are accompanied by maps showing the distribution of the birds. Several introductory chapters summarize information about the vegetation, geologic origins, and history of the state. Summary statistics include tables showing the most common species, the most frequently confirmed breeding species, and correlations between species groups and the different landforms. The data in this volume includes key information on both common and rare species. This book is an excellent reference for anyone interested in birds or bird atlases. The species accounts are extremely well-written and informative. I highly recommend this book.

A cute story...
Fans of the Serendipity series will want to add this one to the collection, but it is not the eye-catcher that some of the others are (Shimmeree, Misty Morgan, etc.). A young otter seeks to find the answer to her question but is faced with a personal and social dilemma upon the discovery of the answer. The story is a good way to teach children to keep in touch with lost friends, and the illustrations are consistently beautiful, but I would more highly recommend some of the earlier Serendipity books.

"The Mars we are trying to explore does not exist!"
This quote by Mike Malin sets the scene for the study of the red planet, as dreamed and hoped by mankind - scientist and layman alike. Over the centuries, Mars has confounded our attempts to describe it in Earth-like terms and Sheehan and O'Meara do a grand job of describing the history of hopes, dreams, and disappointments as the reality of Mars is discovered.

The book is set on epic scale and almost any paragraph rings with grand prose. At times this can be a little overpowering, but the canvas of the Authors is, after all, the entire celestial sphere and the history of human endeavour!

For Mars nuts this is a must buy and is compelling reading. It won't be everyone's cup of tea but it is a vital step in understanding how Mars has disappointed us in the past and may do so again.

Of course, I must declare an interest. Bill Sheehan included some of my own stories about dry Mars in this compendium. I am honoured to be included as a postscript to the legends of Mars' history.
