Much-Needed Photographs of Rapidly Disappearing Plants
A must-have for every library in south Texas. This well-organized book fills a large gap in reference material about vegetation which remains undisturbed on less than 95% of south Texas' landmass. Placement of photos and construction of keys make this an excellent introductory text for students of botany. It's the first volume I can recommend to junior-high and high school teachers as a "user-friendly" approach to keying south Texas herbs. Lots of south Texas plants remain unmentioned here, however. Let us not assume that they are nonnative or without "use to livestock and wildlife."

Small Sailboat Exploration
As a sailor who relishes using a shallow draft boat to explore remote water passages, I thoroughly enjoyed Five Fair Rivers by Robert DeGast. His modest 21' sailboat with 4" draft brought him up the rivers on the lower western shore of the Chesapeake Bay to for a close-up investigation of the both the historical aspects of the Virgina Tidewater and their current state. DeGast's writings reminded of Tom Horton, another good writer who has poked about the Chesapeake Bay and shared observations about this fascinating estuary. Thoroughly recommended for all small boat explorers and those interested in the natural history of the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries.

Abrams Publishing House is the only great art publisher.
This book is a treasure; it is a rare sight to see an art book that faithfully reproduces works, some of which I have personally seen. Gary is a consummate watercolor artist, respectful of his medium and subjects; this is beautifully captured by the incredible color photography and the intelligent, inspired comments by Judith Gordon, This book is a treat for anyone who loves flowers and admires artistic talent...I wish I could find the words...

3 Little Miracles
If it weren't for this book, I wouldn't have 3 wonderfulchildren. I suffered from unexplained infertility for 8 years. Thespecialists tried everything. I even ended up in intensive care going into renal failure and almost died after one particular doctor's treatment from too much pergonal. My non-Christian neighbor was flipping through the radio, landed on a Christian station and heard about the book. She ordered it for the chapter that applied to her and thought of me for the chapter on infertility. It sounded so simple and I believed it could work, plus what did I have to lose? The first month I tried what it said and got pregnant! I didn't expect it to work so soon and went to the urgent care with a "flu bug". The doctor laughed and said I made his night...he had a patient with a broken arm, a car accident, and I was 8 weeks pregnant! Since it had taken so long to have my daughter, when she was almost 2 years old, I thought we should start trying again. Nothing happened. Then I remembered what the book had said, did it, and became pregnant the first month I took the prescribed vitamins again---and had twin boys! My doctor said I made medical history. Thanks to Maureen Kennedy Salaman for providing such valuable information. To this day, I have never seen any mention of these treatments in any infertility articles. Too bad alternative medicine isn't taken more seriously....I'm glad I used it!

From the happy mother of miracle babies---4 year old twin boys and a 7 year old daughter. :)

Franklin: Tennessee's Handsomest Town, a Bicentennial History, 1799-1999

The best history yet
Some casual viewers of this site might wonder what the history of a small Southern town can offer readers across the nation. The answer lies in Franklin itself: for much of its history, it represented the ethos of much of the American nation, yet with noticeable differences that make its uniqueness compelling. Originally considered "the west," a wild and exotic frontier of Indians and game and forest and wild fields, Franklin became an outpost of civilization for the people at the end of the 18th Century who wished to move on to cheaper land and new business opportunities. From its earliest days, Franklinites were slaveholders, and this is another important thread in the complex story of the town, county and region. The town was the focus of the Battle of Franklin on November 30, 1864, one of the Civil War's bloodiest and ultimately most futile battles. While the city maintained the Jim Crow segregation policies as did the rest of the South after the War, this book is one of the first to point out the important African-American leaders, like Rev. A.N.C. Williams, who owned a business on Main Street. The section of the book on the city's second century, written by Robert Holladay, is perhaps the most illuminating, addressing as it does for the first time Franklin's vital Black community and the civil rights movement in the town. Unlike the violence that stained many Southern cities and small towns, Franklin schools were easily and peacefully integrated. When an African-American asked the superintendent of schools about integrating the schools, he replied indignantly that he couldn't or he'd be lynched [by whites] on the Square. The citizen mildly replied that if he didn't he'd be lynched [by Blacks] anyway, so he might as well implement the law. The superintendent did so! The role of the interfaith, interracial Church Women in achieving racial equity is also an interesting and important note. Franklin is currently caught in the vise (and vice) of overdevelopment and urban sprawl, spawned by the arrival of I-65 in the 1960s and abetted by almost a century of pro-development ideology of local goverment. The book somewhat soft-pedals this last issue (a former mayor had his hands deep in development deals himself) and ends on a positive note. Perhaps most poignant of all, however, is the photograph by Holliday showing a shady old pioneer cemetery, bordered by the traditional Middle Tennessee mortarless stone wall, adjacent to and visually overwelmed by the new commercial development in the Cool Springs Mall area. Rural Williamson County is gone, replaced by the McAmerica of any suburb from Bangor to San Diego.

Gallipoli

THE book on Gallipoli
Written partly in response to what the author felt were mistakes in the Alan Moorhead book (which many regarded as the definitive book on the campaign), this is in my opinion THE book on this complicated and for many Australians, still very emotive subject.
Unlike other books on the subject this book presents us with both sides of the picture and finally gives both the Turk leadership and common soldier the respect they deserve.
This is a real war book that does not flinch from telling it like it is and to me the wonder is that men could endure such horror at all.

What I have been waiting for!
People in my industry (golf) finally have a "Bible" to refer to when it comes to professional irrigation systems. Laid out in a basic, yet thorough format this book has it all, from good photos to useful charts and glossary. Anyone even considering installing a new system should have this book at their side. I wish I had it when our system was designed and "thrown in the ground" by a purported expert.

A welcome introduction
For those wishing to study military history, either seriously or for their own benefit this is a great work to start with. A chronological by subject discussion and listing of the principle texts of military history in the english language. While this could use an update to cover more recent history, you will find nothing better or more recent available to you. This book is not only informative, but readable as well. It is also great for those with some knowledge of military history who wish to branch out into other areas of the field.
