Outposts of the Spirit
William Justice, a Protestant minister with a curiosity about the paranormal, searched for spiritual truth within and beyond traditional beliefs. His memoir of his explorations, Outposts of the Spirit, has now been posthumously published by Hampton Roads. In the Editor's Introduction, they explain that they published a book written nearly twenty years ago because the need to look at the paranormal in a way "that accomodates prior beliefs, doubts, and natural skepticism" still exists and that "William Justice provides this masterfully, in a manner both cordial and fair, clear and incisive."

Justice himself was not a psychic and had only three brief experiences that could be described as paranormal. He did, however, have an open mind, and he had the ability to convince others to discuss their experiences. He met and talked with Edgar Cayce, and other noteworthy spiritualists of his day. He was also a researcher who studied the writings of men like Socrates, Abraham Lincoln, and Charles Lindbergh. He says that "instances of spirit guides such as those who directed Lindbergh and Socrates are more numerous than many might imagine. In fact, many of the world's great owe their places in history to the influence of spirit agency."

He also investigated the ouija board, astral projection and the nature of life after death.

After a challenge by a friend, Justice began studying the Bible, looking for instances of paranormal experiences within it. He cites the particular example of Jesus talking with Moses and Elijah as described in Luke 9:28-36 as communication with the spirit world by a living being. He came to regard the Bible as "probably the most psychically oriented book in the world," adding that "the early church was built on the fact of spirit phenomena; without it, Christianity would never have come into being."

In his forward, George Ritchie writes that "Justice has shown that the Holy Spirit of God that lives in Jesus is still in contact with us every day in ways that go beyond our five physical senses." Readers who heretofore haven't been able to reconcile their religious beliefs with the metaphysical will find the answers they seek in Outposts of the Spirit.

Possible Palladian Villas - software

Very neat little app for students of Palladio
This Macintosh program is the same software used by the authorsof Possible Palladian Villas. After reading the book and learning anumber of interesting aspects to Palladio's work that no other author has ever discussed so clearly I became very curious about this software program and how it generated Palladian villas.

The software -- which is quite dated now and only runs on System 7.x -- is a simple little application that generates Palladian plans using an algorithm created by the authors. This algorithm is based on the principles of planning as determined by an exhaustive investigation of Palladio's villas (44 villas to be exact were used). It can generate an infinate number of permutations based on the metrics of subdivision and proportion used by Palladio. You give the program the total outside dimensions in Vincentine feet and it does the rest.

Facademaker is the part that allows you to choose an appropriate facade type - based on Palladio's range of facade types (approximately three with various derivations). From there exterior and interior openings in the walls are generated.

A very useful tool for an indepth scholarly study of Palladio's architecture. Highly recommended (the book too!)

For mature pottery connoisseurs
Pottery, Politics, Art: George Ohr And The Brothers Kirkpatrick by Richard D. Mohr (Professor of Philosophy, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign) scrutinizes the works of three of America's most fervent nineteenth century potters. Black-and-white and full color photographs of the sensual, masterfully wrought works add a visual complement to the thoughtful studies of these classic art pieces, responding to the message of the creators' selves within the pieces. A work of superbly presented scholarship, Pottery, Politics, Art is very highly recommended for mature pottery connoisseurs and academic "Art History" collections.

Preparing for the Ap Calculus Examination-Bc

Great Review Book For BC Calculus
My teacher had us buy this book at the begining of the year, and she assigned problems from it, and is has been invaluable. The problems it gives are not your standard textbook plug-in-the formula questions. There are some of those, but most of the questions require some thinking and an actual understanding of Calculus. Even though I switched teachers, I still used the book to help review for tests, and it has worked great. This is a great buy for anyone who needs a supplement of questions to help study from during the school year for BC calculus. The only negative about the book is that it lacks detailed explanations. It only gives the answers and also gives a cross reference of questions by topics.

Begin a whole new adventure in spiritual development
If you are looking for a superb guide to spiritual development practices, look no more! "Realizing Your Inner Potential" is the magnum opus of the late Dr George King. He was a Western Master of Yoga who applied a brilliant intellect to the secret teachings of the East. As a younger man he threw himself into the practice of yoga, earning many advanced initiations from the great teachers of the time. He became capable of awakening the mystic fire of kundalini in its entirety into the ultimate state of samadhi. This gave him the ability to discern from personal experience which spiritual development practices combined effectiveness with balance. During his life, the mystic tradition of secrecy towards powerful teachings changed into one of openness in keeping with the unfolding New Age. This meant that he was free to adopt practices containing the ancient secrets of spiritual attainment and also to design new ones to work effectively with Western culture.
