Timely topical thoughts
The author addresses the urgent need for people to control the government through the voting process, lest they lose even the right to vote.
The book shows how the rights in the bill of rights have been taken from the people by the politicans, bureaucrats, and judges.
Even if you do not consider yourself a political animal, this book would make good reading, and may awaken your desire to remain free according to the Constitution

An Important Account of Tennessee Williams' Last Years
If you want to get the feel of the end years of Tennessee Williams' life...be sure to read Bruce Smith's "Costly Performances". I know because I was Tennessee's personal assistant for about six months ending right after the main stage opening of "A House Not Meant to Stand". Some of Bruce's "facts" are clearly incorrect. He has Tennessee and I meeting in Vancouver (I am referred to as "Saskatch".) and later travelling to Sicily. Neither of us was in either place while I was in Tennessee's employ. There are other errors too but they are minor compared to the importance of the dynamics of Tennessee and the other people in his life at that time...and Bruce captures this quite well.

As Bruce points out, Tennessee was largely abandoned in his last years by the mainstream and in their place came a cast of characters all seeking to gain something from him...money, drugs, fame...but the biggest was to be seen as his savior, either professional or personal. This drama plays out in Bruce's book and to a certain extent continues to play out AS Bruce's book. Bruce accurately skewers such characters as Gary Tucker and Schuyler Wyatt, and in great detail, but also minimizes the "good guys" such as Vasilis Voglis (referred to simply as "Voglis".) and Kate Schweppe, AKA Texas Kate.

Thus, in his book, Bruce is left alone on the stage, all others having been dismissed. But as even Bruce points out, Tennessee was always pitting people against each other, encouraging their rivalry and watching as the drama played out. He encouraged both sides of this drama, both constructive and destructive. This was his life and as he grew weaker from age and from the toll of the way he lived, he maintained this ongoing drama even at the expense of his commercial life. This is what we see unfolding in Bruce's book. If you want to know what those days were like...you will find it here.

Good book that introduces domain decomposition
A little something for everyone in this text. Discussion of computational issues, references, algorithms, and some convergence analysis. The authors do a good job of covering the subject at an understandable level. A small fault with the book is it leaves you wanting more! Excellent way to learn about these methods on your own.

Great description of the Civil War U.S. Christian Commision
I read this book particularly to learn more about the United States Christian Commision which operated during the Civil War. The subject of the book, Edward Smith, was instramental in organizing and operating this orgnization in the western theater of the War. the Chrisian Commision provided material and spritural assistance to soldiers during the war. This included, reading and writing material, food and clothing, nursing of sick and wounded and providing spiritural support through christian tracts and church services. All of their assistance was provided free by volunteer "delegates". This publication devotes five chapters to Edward Smith's leadership in this significant organization.

Enormously fun book.
I read The Giant as a child and I loved it again when I reread it 20 years later. The main character is an author of travel books for children. The story builds up a good suspense as he gradually discovers that an enormous boy has secretly moved into a mysterious building next to his hotel in France. The boy is about 8 stories tall and about 9 years old, and he befriends the main character. They must decide whether to reveal the giant boy's existence to the world. There are humorous touches, for example when the boy combs his hair and static electricity attracts wigs and cats as if they were lint. The occasional black and white illustrations are charming...such as baby pictures showing weight lifters struggling to teach the giant to walk when he was an 8 foot tall toddler. If you enjoyed Otto in Africa, or James and the Giant Peach, or other books by William Pene Du Bois or Roald Dahl, you will enjoy this book. Everyone will smile when reading this upbeat book for young readers.

Instead of Luc Tuymans, Anton Chekhov, Vratislav Effenberger, Milton Hatoum, Andrie Platonov, Victor Pelevin, Rebecca Solnit, I found in this issue of Grand Street (no 64) contributions of David Mamet, Suzan Lori Parks, José Saramago, Tony Smith, Tennesse Williams and Pablo Neruda
