A refreshing and encouraging look at homeschooling by faith!
I highly recommend TEACH ME LORD... for both new and veteran homeschoolers! The Smiths share essays of encouragement and exhortation about lessons they learned while homeschooling. Instead of offering us "human" wisdom, they point us to the Lord and His Word and challenge us to be willing to be taught of Him instead of allowing the world's ways to be our standard. How refreshing to find not just another "how to" book filled with human opinions! TEACH ME LORD... is full of "quotable quotes" to inspire and encourage you in your day to day homeschooling. --Tamara Eaton

A book every Christian home-schooling parent should own.
In the middle of my first year as a home-schooler, I revisited the essays in this wonderful book. The Smiths manage to encourage and challenge at the same time, as they recount the myriad ways in which the Lord worked on their character as they taught their children. This is not a "how to" book; it is much deeper and richer than that. Consistently, in every essay, through every lesson learned big and small, the Smiths point to the foundational premises of Christian home-schoolers. Or, to be more precise, to the one sure foundation of Christian home-schooling. It is so easy to lose our way, and to become caught up in the cares and/or the goals of this world. We can so readily be derailed by loneliness (ours or our children's), exhaustion, exasperation, impatience, and anxiousness. We can so readily adopt the world's goals for our children, forgetting what it is that God would have us do. What does it profit a child to achieve perfect SAT scores, the Smiths ask, yet lose his own soul? Our God-ordained role as transmitters of God's Word to our children is the primary purpose of home-schooling our children. You will recognize yourself on these pages; and you will find tremendous encouragement here, as well as a clear challenge to turn to God's Word for guidance. This is Biblical exhortation at its best, and every Christian home-schooling parent should have a copy close at hand.

A great book for growing in faith and understanding!
This devotional has been a great tool for me in my faith growth. I like the fact that each week is a chance to reflect on a particular lesson (rather than only one day of reflection, like many other devotionals). Due to this format, I found myself drawing deeper conclusions and understanding from the scripture than I ever had in the past. As a teenager I found it very worthwhile, but feel it is appropriate for any age.

Introduction into the discipline of successful teamwork
Jon R. Katzenbach and Douglas K. Smith are partners at McKinsey & Co., the famous management-consulting firm. This article was published in the March-April 1993 issue of the Harvard Business Review.

The authors report on their research into teamwork, in particular "to discover what differentiates various levels of team performance, where and how teams work best, and what top management can do to enhance their effectiveness." Katzenbach and Smith define "a team as a small number of people, with complementary skills who are committed to a common purpose, set of performance goals, and approach for which they hold themselves mutually accountable." They discuss all the elements within this definition in detail. The authors then continue to classify teams in three ways: First, teams that recommend things, second, teams that make or do things, and, third, teams that run things. Each type of team face a characteristic set of challenges. The authors also believe that teams will become the primary unit of performance in high-performance organizations and that these teams will enhance existing structures without actually replacing them. The article is complemented with a useful short summary on approaches that are shared by many successful teams.

In this article the authors discuss teams, which they believe is a basic discipline. By discussing all the different elements of this discipline Katzenbach and Smith provide great insights and tools for better teamwork. The authors have written several good books on teamwork. Recommended to leaders, managers, team members, and MBA-students. The authors use simple US-English.

A History of the Lute from Antiquity to the Renaissance
Published in Hardcover by Lute Soc of America Inc (2002)
Author: Douglas Alton Smith
Amazon base price: $85.00
Average review score:

Fair treatment for the lute at last!
The lute was the great instrument of the Renaissance, but then it slowly fell from favor, to be revived only recently. Thus it has been neglected by historians. The present book provides a wonderful encyclopedic, yet critical and analytic, account of the lute in Europe in the medieval and Renaissance periods. The author has not covered the Baroque; I hope another volume is forthcoming on that era. Also, the Near Eastern origins and subsequent flourishing of the 'ud--the ancestor of the lute--are not covered, for lack of materials in Western languages. Someone fluent in Arabic and Persian must do that job! Unlike the lute, the 'ud never fell from popularity, and remains a great and major instrument of composition and performance. There is only one real fault in Douglas Smith's book, but it is one that will make strong men weep: There is no discography. Please, Dr. Smith, post a supplementary discography on the Lute Society of America's website. Otherwise, this book is comprehensive. It can be recommended not only to those who (like me) would happily trade the last 150 years of western classical music for a bar of Dowland, but for anyone interested in music history.

First Rate!
Excellent book. Every Southerner--no, every American--should read this book. Smith has done us a great favor. Southern baby boomers will especially appreciate the best explanation I've read of why things are the way they are in the South today. Smith makes history an enjoyable read.

A great book with keys that work!
This is an excellent book that belongs on the self of anyone who wants to be considered up-to-speed on the critters that dwell in our waters. I've had the opportunity to use the annelid and the tardigrade keys thus far, and both worked wonderfully. The general information for all of the groups is well written and up-to-date, and the addition of color plates is a nice touch. Highly recommended!

Great Classic
I fell in love with Rebecca when I was 10 yrs. She was so cheerful, inspiring, naive, and reminded me a lot of Anne of Green Gables. This series takes the book that is originally by Kate Wiggin and expands it. Eric Wiggin follows and gives more detail about her as she continues to grow. Rebecca is charming and by her patient love wins over her crusty Aunt Miranda. At 11 Rebecca goes to live with her mother's sisters: Aunt Miranda and Aunt Jane. Everyone says living with Aunt Miranda will be the "making" of Rebecca. My family just listened to this on tape and I was again reminded of how delightful it is.

Great Ending to a Great Series!
What a great way to end a wonderful series. For those of you who loved Anne of Green Gables you will adore Rebecca Rowena Randall! The way she takes care of her mom and Aunt Jane is so sweet. Of course, Emma Jane is there also. Life wouldn't be the same without her. Mr. Aladdin is taking on a whole new role! Never leave him out of the picture. Even if you haven't read the first 2 in this series and have only read the book by Kate Wiggin this book is still enjoyable. I read this when I was 12 and I still love it. Unfortunately, classics like these are no longer written or read these days.
