Tschaï: The best geo-political SF adventure ever written
I recommend to read the 4 books to get the whole picture.
The style is efficientand fluent, the idea is innovative, the adventure is really captivating, the geo-politic of Tschaï is quiet complex to avoid a boring story. To have in your collection.

The best, the only
If you don't fall in love with SF reading Tschai, you neverwill. Tschai is magnificent.

SIX stars!

Great reading
The creation of this series of books must have been mind-boggling. An awesome book I keep reading over and over again.

A SERIES OF WELL-DOCUMENTED ANALYSES
"Clinical Oncology: A Multi-Disciplinary Approach for Physicians & Students" did a thorough analyses of all aspects of general oncology. It is complete, comprehensive, and very reliable for evaluating and managing cancerous growths.
This book's well-arranged chapters provide detailed information on the pathology of several types of malignant tumours, before going ahead with their respective diagnosis, management and treatment. Its overview is sound and clear: a useful tool that every oncologist, G.P., or student would cherish.
The included CD-ROM is a big plus: especially for those who need something portable to lug around.

Excellent source book for basic information about cancer
While I have used this book for several years as a source book to understand specific kinds of cancer I only regret that there has not as yet been an updated version. Not only have there been new chemotherapeutic agents in use, there are also many new diagnostic tools. In the field of medicine six or seven years is an eternity, especially for cancer and related conditions.

Excellent! Concise and comprehensive.
This paperback book is an excellent reference for physicians, medical students, nurses, medical librarians, pharmacists who want a concise, comprehensive oncology reference. Chapters cover the basics principles of chemotherapy, radiology, surgery, and cancer diagnosis. Other chapters cover related- issues such as pain control and late effects. Chapters covering each type of cancer include information on the epidemiology/etiology, detection/diagnosis, classification, treatment and prognosis. The only shortcoming is that the book is somewhat outdated. One can only hope that a new edition is in the works!

Confucian Moral Self Cultivation
Published in Paperback by Hackett Publishing Co. (2000)
Author: Philip J. Ivanhoe
Amazon base price: $9.95
Average review score:

A Must Buy
Excellant book, well written. Conveys core ideas succinctly. Uses modern spellings: Kongzi=Confucius, Mengzi=Mencius, Xunzi=Hsun Tzu, and Zhu Xi=Chu Hsi. A thoughtful and educational book. It was enlightening and stimulating.

Buy this book!
If you are a beginner or student of Chinese philosophy, you should buy this book. This is a great introduction to Confucian thinkers written in accessible and clear language. I found it to be extremely easy to read and very easy to understand. Like the anthology he co-edited with Dr. Van Norden (whose review is below), this book is excellent. And it is very reasonably priced as well.

- J. McCausland

Excellent overview!
Ivanhoe provides a readable and reliable overview of some of the major figures in Confucianism from over 2,500 years. Each Confucian is discussed in terms of two themes: the relative emphasis he gives to study and reflection, and his conception of human nature. Confucius himself was somewhat ambiguous on these points (leading to much dispute among later followers). Mencius, since he believed that human nature is good, said that reflection on our innate instincts could provide us with ethical guidance. Xunzi disagreed with Mencius, arguing that human nature is bad, so we must study to reform our nature. Later Confucians like Zhu Xi and Wang Yangming were deeply influenced by the Buddhist notion of a transpersonal self that all humans share. However, Zhu Xi thought that our selfish desires heavily obscured our good, original nature, so we must study in order to better understand our own nature. In contrast, Wang Yangming, while recognizing the danger of selfish desires, warned against the dangers of purely academic study. He held that each of us has, prior to study, the ability to exercise a "pure knowing," through which we both know the good and will act in accordance with it.

I use this book a lot in my classes: I recommend it highly.

(This book is a revised version of a much more expensive hardback edition published by Peter Lang.)

Conjuring Maud
Published in Hardcover by GreyCore Press (2001)
Author: Philip Danze
Amazon base price: $23.00
Average review score:

A work of literary magic
Philip Danze's Conjuring Maud is a novel about David Unger, an aging circus magician who recounts his younger days in colonial West Africa, and how his profession changed from medicine to magic. The heart of the novel lies in David's unusual, close, and sometimes erotic relationship to Maud King (loosely based on the British feminist and explorer Mary Kingsley), a British explorer and ethnologist 16 years older than David, whose devotion to the resplendence of Africa and its people is unmatched among mortals. Liquid, subtle, and at times bittersweet in its mystery, Conjuring Maud is a work of literary magic, transporting the reader back in time to life in colonial Africa with its careful attention to detail.

conjuring maud
best book i have read in years. an exciting adventure story with romance and a little magic. you can almost feel the heat and dampness of the jungle in wild africa. quite a fantastic book, i couldn't put it down.

May-December romance with a twist!
If you are looking for an adventure and love story right out of Africa, this is for you. It's the story of a young man that meets his soul-mate in a very unlikely place with a very unlikely older woman, Maud. This is a magical trip with unexpected twists and turns throuhout. I just curled up with a cup of Java and let this wonderful story transport me far away from the present reality that lies just outside my door. It's like a calgon bath for the soul!

Contested Terrain: A New History of Nature and People in the Adirondacks

outstanding
This is truly fine work. The relatively new genre of environmental history has produced the usual amount of academic turgidity, but many of these young historyians clearly love the land that they write abot, and have the skills to make discussions of the history of human interacton with natural systems into literature. If you enjoy Terrie, you should also pick up Bullough's Pond by Diana Muir.

This book examines the complexity of Adirondack History
The book introduces concepts and ideas that you will have thought of before, but never had actually examined in real images and arguements.

Has some great historical facts and stories.

Tells New Yorkers about what has happened in their state.

This book is much better than Schneider's.
I have always loved the Adirondacks, but after reading this astonishingly well-written book I have a new appreciation for this remarkable region. If you're a fellow Adirondacks-lover I HIGHLY recommend this book. Also, if you have time to read only one history of the Adirondacks, then this is the one to read.

Great beginner reader in English or in Spanish. I teach a Spanish class for our area homeschooler's children. This is just what the dogcatcher ordered. I am able to compare English to Spanish with no problem. If you use VIVA EL ESPANOL ! teaching series you will like this book for your class.

A great book -
My 7 year old son enjoys this book in Spanish - he is in a Spanish immersion class - learning Spanish all day in elementary school for the next 5 years. It's a great beginner reader book with fun pictures (and I'm learning Spanish, too, from it!)

Great Book

Data Reduction and Error Analysis for the Physical Sciences
Published in Paperback by McGraw-Hill Education - Europe (01 August, 2002)
Authors: Philip Bevington and D. Keith Robinson
Amazon base price: $
Average review score:

Great Book
I make measurements frequently and this book is great for providing the background to analyze your data.

I took undergraduate level statistics and it never really gave the practical applied background in how to analyze data. It merely presented concepts and presumed you knew how and why to apply them. This book is very good at helping you to understand the how and why.

I have read a number of other statistics book in search of the practical applied information provided in this book and did not find it in the other books.

The writing is clear and consice. There is enough background provided for even those unexposed to statistics.

I have not tried the software. Most of the formulas are easy to apply and can be implemented in simple programs or spreadsheets in very little time.

In short, I recommend this book to anyone making measurements of any kind.

"Updated" classic, but still vintage '92
Robinson's second edition continues the late Bevington's tradition of clear and concise writing, making this book a priceless reference for scientists. Robinson has added discussions of modern problems such as resolving closely-spaced peaks in a spectrum. The new version also adds chapters on Monte Carlo techniques and maximum-likelihood analysis, both powerful tools for data analysis made possible by better computers.

The chapter structure has been modified considerably, so those who have grown comfortable with the first edition over the past decades may not be able to find things as easily. Other than that, most of the weaknesses are computer-related. Much has changed even since 1992.

Robinson added an appendix on graphical presentation. This sounds promising but is a pretty trivial discussion of when to use linear or logarithmic axes and the advantages of a historgram. Might be useful for a very young student, but these days playing with such things is easy in any graphing program.

Many of the computer code snippets have been removed. Most of them were only a few lines of code with lots of comment lines anyway. The codes that remain have been moved from the main text to a densely-packed appendix, which makes them more difficult to study while reading the text.

The codes themselves have been updated from old FORTRAN to a structured language, but I would have preferred C or FORTRAN 90 over the chosen PASCAL. The latter may be useful for undergraduate students, but I've never seen a PASCAL compiler in a working physics lab.

The included disk is a now-obsolete 5.25" floppy. I had to hunt for a machine that could read it and copy over to a 3.5" disc. The text claims repeatedly that the disc has both FORTRAN 77 and PASCAL routines on it, but my copy only has the PASCAL.

In the end, it's the textual content that is important, and this book is a fantastic basic discussion of data analysis and statistics for students and a great reference for the practicing scientist.

A classic returned!
Bevington's first edition of this book dates to the late 60's when Fortran ruled the world. I was crushed when I lost my copy in the mid 70's and am delighted to find he's written a modern updated edition!

Deliver Us from Evil

A FINE READ
Philip Luber hits his stride in the second of his Harry Kline series. The characters are well drawn, the writing is crisp, and the plot moves briskly. I owe a vote of thanks to a friend on the Amazon Discussion Board who recommended this series. I hope he reaches the audience due him.

The picture postcard Concord MA serves him well as a backdrop. I particularly like his characterization of Police Chief Korvich. He and Harry play well against one another, and for once the author doesn't deal our hero all the good lines. The book has crackling humor, a bit on the wry and dry side that I enjoyed very much. Mystery fans, give yourself a treat and give Harry Kline a read. If you enjoy Jonathan Kellerman, this book is a must.

Deliver Us From Evil
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was a very fast read...held my attention from beginning to end. Highly recommend.

Loved it!
Great mystery and an interesting cast of characters. Luber's novel showcases his writing talent, along with his ability to spin a great mystery.

Digital Aboriginal: The Direction of Business Now: Instinctive, Nomadic, and Ever-Changing
Published in Audio Cassette by Time Warner Audio Books (2002)
Authors: Mikela Tarlow and Philip Tarlow
Amazon base price: $18.98
Average review score:

A must read for any serious business person.
This book is about business and how it is evolving faster than the speed of light. This book will help enlighten you on how and why you must consider technology as the way to enhance and grow your business from the inside out. Your customers expect it, your prospects expect it and your employees will too.

Technology can pave the way to a future you may not have envisioned yet. Hold on to your hats - it's going to be an exciting ride! This book will help you be a part of the POSITIVE side of the inevitable.

An incredible journey!
I love this book! Few business books have ever inspired me to buy multiple copies for friends and colleagues but none has ever kept me up at night like this amazing work.

Drawing on the metaphor of Australian nomad culture, the Tarlows weave a web ranging from the implications of intellectual property practices on ALL businesses to the value of co-designing experience and storytelling over passive media. The final chapters on idea communities, social genius, trust and tribalmind are both mind-blowing and hopeful.

Perhaps what I enjoy the most about this book is the tension between future vision and present practicality. In many ways, Digital Aboriginal suggests a way to navigate the future using imagination, ethics and a heightened sense of participation in the world.

I cannot recommend this work highly enough!

Who Owns the Wind?
Mikela and Philip Tarlow invite the reader to deliberate this question by sharing their wisdom and knowledge about the Aboriginal belief in the connectivity of relationships. As a reader, an observer of the story, you will travel through time both past and future, chapter by chapter, experiencing the opportunity to dream about the possibilities of a new business design where ownership ideas are replaced with a regard for creativity and innovation. You are brought to an intersection in time where ideas create a place of order and rules are forever rewritten. You will not be able to resist being part of an evolution of both spirit and thought.

Discourse on the Origin of Inequality (The World's Classics)
Published in Paperback by Oxford University Press (1994)
Authors: Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Franklin Philip, and Franklin Phillip
Amazon base price: $7.95
Average review score:

A Perfect Example of the 18th Century Enlightenment.
This is a wonderful example of the 18th century enlightenment. In this work, Rousseau states that inequalities of rank, wealth, and power are the inevitable result of the civilizing process, something most of us have found to be very true if unfair. This new translation also includes all of Rousseau's own notes.

I enjoyed this tremendously, and am always amazed that the thought pattern and process is oneof the few things that hasn't changed over the centuries.

Excellant
Excellent discourse. This book discusses some of the rudiments of the history of inequality and how its self supporting and ever existing in human nature. I recommend this book for those readers who either want to increase their knowledge on Jean-Jacques Rousseau or historical development of inequality

For those who want to further their command over Rousseau's life- I suggest them to read 'Confessions' by Rousseau.

The garden of eden
I find Rousseau especially creative in the way he describes how inequality progressed from the time the first humans made contact. He makes a good case for the solitary life. I think Rousseau believes it is destructive whenever humans come together in groups. Governments were formed to protect the weaker from the stronger or as Rousseau thinks to actually protect the rich from the poor. This is an outstanding book. It will haunt you.
