Through The Shopping Glass
I am a native New Yorker and have never missed the Christmas windows at the department stores for the past 25 years. It has always been a family tradition to walk the chilly city streets to check out what the stores had created for the most wonderful time of the year. This book says it all. It is absolutely fabulous and well needed. It brings back such memories to see these wonderful creations. Thank you for bringing this book into your store. I have purchased them for all of my Christmas gifts this year. Thanks again.

Sublime!
This is the PERFECT book which incorporates all that is New York, Christmas and wonderful! Finally with this book out on the market there is no need to travel to see the windows, it's all in one precious bound beauty! This must be part of everyone's gift giving repertoire!

WOW-zers
I must admit, I was "WOW-ed" by this book, Through the Shopping Glass!! I have never been to New York City before to see these wonderful windows...but always wanted to go. After reading this book, I booked a flight to NYC just to see if they were as beautiful as the book portrayed. Sure enough, they were even better...but to see them, armed with the history of the windows that this book provided me with, was even more enjoyable. I even met the author during her book signing on 5th Ave. This book is a MUST HAVE for anyone with a holiday spirit!!

Good
This is a collection of the Target: 2006 Storyline of the UK Transformers comics. I enjoyed this graphic novel alot. Although, neither this or 'Fallen Angel' can ever be better than the last issue's of the US comic(by far my favorite). Pick this up if you have already read this US comics (if not get those first).

The Best Transformers Story ever told!
This is the best Transformers comic book story ever told! Target 2006 was written by Simon Furman, with Art By Jeff Anderson, Will Simpson and Ron Smith! But the Best UK Transformers artwork is done by Geoff Senior! Ultra Magnus, Autobot Leader of 2006 travels back in time to 1986 stop Galvatron,Cyclonus, and Scourge from creating a weapon of distructive power that could destroy the Chaos-Bringer Unicron! These characters came from the epic saga of Transformers the Movie! on the back of the book it says "In Target 2006, Arch-Decepticon Leader Galvatron travels back in time to lay the foundations for the future destruction! With Optimus Prime missing, feared dead. Cybertrons greatest Hero, Ultra Magnus maybe Earth's last hope! These Books reprint Transformers UK #78-88! Highly Recommended!

Great Companion to Transformers: The Movie
This collection is from the British Transformers comic and was published just before the TF movie was released. Galvatron, Cyclonus and Scourge have travelled back in time to the 1980's during the events in TF Movie to build a super weapon to destroy Unicron and free themselves from him. The time travel method they use rips 1980's Optimus Prime and several other Transformers out of the present, causing Ultra Magnus to journey from Cybertron to try to discover what has happened to the Matrix. On 1980's Cybertron itself an Autobot terrorist cell is planning a debilitating strike on the Decepticon government. This is, without doubt, one of the best TF stories ever written. The british team were at their peak during this era and you owe it to yourself to purchase this book.

AMERICAN TERRORISM
Sheriff McCurtain has a problem. It appears that a negro boy has been accused of raping a white gal. White folk in Flowery Branch can't allow that to happen and so a lynch mob forms. In times of crisis such as this the sheriff does what is politically correct; he goes fishing. This time McCurtain finds himself the fish on the hook who just can't get away no matter how hard he tries.

In this masterful piece of literature, Erskine Caldwell unravels before our eyes the pathology and terrorism of lynching in the south. No one could do a better job for Caldwell is a white southerner who grew up in an environment in which lynching was a common form of entertainment. Trouble in July goes deep into the psychology of what makes common white men into brutes and those who work for them into victims.

Like many men McCurtain finds it easier to ignore what is going on rather than try to contain the trouble. The more that he tries to wash his hands of the affair the worse it gets. Those in power see the political and economical ramifications of the act and call on him to jail the accused. After all,McCurtain is their political puppet to be manipulated at will.

Such an intriguing drama exposes the hypocrasy of the law and shows how fear can make even the most honest of men betray their basic values of justice. Fear reduces the "negro" community into one that becomes terrorized and beaten into submission. Fear allows the upholder of the law to allow things to get out of hand merely because he wants to be voted into office next year.

Although the characters are simple; their motives, thoughts and values are complex as they struggle with their consciences in carrying out their heinous acts of cowardliness. You have laid out before you the ugliness of a system that dehumanizes everyone involved. The foreward by Bryant Simon in this edition gives us the background which gave rise to this novel. According to Simon, the author has made a significant transition in his work by revealing the south's racism in a straightforward manner. He doesn't hold back the punches.

Caldwell has given us a masterpiece about American Terrorism at its zenith in the United States. You will be repulsed, angered, and yes, fearful as you follow the crowd. Our author won't let us become mere voyeurs. We become the lynch mob, the negroes, the soiled politicians and all that is sick in southern terrorism. Read this outstanding work, feel the terror and learn about overcoming the mob psychology in your life. I was deeply moved by Trouble In July and you will too.

Caldwell at his best. I couldn't put the book down.
Hatred, bigotry, lust, lynchings and mayhem all take place in the ole south. After reading trouble in July I ran out and bought "A PLACE CALLED ESTHERVILLE", here again Caldwell displays just how good his writing & story telling skills are. I read "TROUBLE IN JULY ABOUT 13 YRS. AGO. The book was lent to a friend and never returned. I was delighted when I saw that the book had been reprinted, I plan on purchasing another copy. This book has stayed on my mind for years. I wish Caldwell was still alive so he could write more of these novels with stories from the land of dixie. Trouble in july will move you and bring you close to tears, trust me and keep a hankie close at hand.

read it years ago misplaced copy. you can't put it down .
one of the best books written about the ole south filled with bigory, passion, rape, hatred, i lent this book to a friend about 10 yrs. ago have been trying to get a new copy since then. erskine caldwell is at his best. don't miss this one

Read and Compare Translations
By my Green Candle !! Jarry is very difficult to translate from the French, so be sure to read and compare various translations to really get the feel, if you don't read French. Well worth the effort, and this volume is a fine place to start.

Wild book!
This is a school joke that has evolved into an epic! McLeish's translation takes a lot of liberties and sometimes many things are lost. On the other side, he possesses great wit and through compensation, his work comes out as one of the best translations!

Terry Gilliam meets Shakespeare by way of Troma Films!
Alfred Jarry is the grandfather of modern day surrealism, and the Ubu trilogy is a great, twisted work of genius. It reads like Shakespeare crossed with a slasher film. It's also a great parody of anything you can think of, and it is quite hilarious. The Ubu trilogy deals with the epic rise and fall of Pa and Ma Ubu, as they become Kings of several European countries, get involved in murder more than once, fight in wars, have deadly encounters with bears in caves, and even voluntarily become slaves. Great stuff! If you like Samuel Beckett, then you have to check out Jarry too!

Great Book
I have bought many books about dogs, 'cause I simply adore them and want to learn everything regarding their health and how to make them happier. This book is awsome! Everything a dog owner wants to learn, is here. Categorized, makes it easy to find what you are looking for, includes all symptoms&solutions, daily check up, emergencies, it's just perfect! A "MUST" for every house with dogs. Beginners or experts, will take the most from this book and love it.

Very educational and easy reading for dog lovers!
Great book with lots of information concerning the symptoms and solutions for your dog. Well organized and easy to read. I found this book very helpful for my older dogs. I would recommend this book to all dog owners.

Very informative and easy to read
This is an excellent book. The first two chapters talk about emergency first aid and common behavior problems.

The rest of the book is divided into different sections by body parts (head, eyes, skin, etc). Under each section, different topics are grouped by symptoms instead of disease names, therefore making it easier to to look for answers. It provides a very thorough discussion on symptoms, causes, treatment and prevention in a simple and easy-to-understand manner.

The appendix about health check, over-the-counter medications, herbs and minerals also provides as a good reference.

Whitewash: Pablo Escobar and the Cocaine Wars
Published in Paperback by MacMillan Pub Ltd (1995)
Author: Simon Strong
Amazon base price: $14.99
Average review score:

Simon Strong is an excellent investigative reporter
This book is powerful. Strong researches the grip that narco-dollars have on Colombian society. He documents the widespread corruption of Colombian society. Strong traces the growth of the Medellin Cartel and documents American and Colombian frustration battling drug trafficking.

Simon Strong knows Colombia intimately
This book is by far the most comprehensive examination of who Pablo Escobar was and the power he commanded in Colombia.

Thrilling to say the least
A very detailed look at the complex cocaine smuggling trade, from the growers in Columbia and Bolivia, right through to the consumers in America. Based on the real life, rise and fall story, of one of the most notorious cartel bosses, Pablo Escobar. One of the few books that has kept me reading through the night!

Windows 95 Multimedia & Odbc Api Bible
This book, is the best result of the masterminds of the state of art, and I Suggest as a read for everyone that work with this technology.

It's great in any language!
I do not read Japanese but the only available edition of this book when I needed it was the Japanese edition. I still found the book to give me all the information I needed to do what I needed to do, write an audio recording app without knowing anything about Multi-Media beforehand. I also liked that it used mostly lower level coding so that it would not be so at risk from Microsofts whims.

Simon gets it right again!!
I can honestly say that I have never been disappointed by any Robert Simon book and this is no exception. Rather than read this book from cover to cover I use it as a reference. It is a fairly complete guide to multimedia and ODBC API calls and it is presented in a way that anyone can understand. Good job Mr. Simon!!

Hysterical
These 14 stories, first published in Yiddish in 1942, link us to a vanished world, reviving the Jewish folklore of the fools of Helm, a mythic town set deep in the forests of Poland. There Jews had long beards and black coats that reached their ankles--but were not quite like other Jews.

In the spring after a very hard winter, they built a wall around their town to keep the cold out. Later, they invited an organist to play for the town--although there was not a single organ in Helm.

The world came to regard them as fools. An angel had been flying over Helm en route to heaven with a sack full of fools in need of repair when the bottom caught on a treetop and all the fools fell into the valley town of Helm, where they remained. The Helmites insisted that they were not the fools. "It's just that foolish things are always happening to us," explained Mottel.

For example, since thieves always steal at night, the Helm shopkeepers kept their stores open at night and slept by day. When no one came to their stores, they decided instead to hire a night watchman--who wore an inside out fur coat to be recognized, sat on a horse and guarded the shops.

But one fine morning, the watchman woke the townspeople. Their shops were emptied in the night. Furious, they dragged him to the Rabbi. He said, "I admit I saw the thieves break the locks. With my own eyes I watched them carrying the wares out of the shops. But I could do nothing." Why? Because his horse was tied to the post near town hall, far away from the shops, and untying it was too risky. The horse might gallop off and kill him.

With thieves in town, the Helmites decided there was no justice, and sent two messengers to buy some and bring it back to Helm, for rich and poor alike. The Helmites rode all the way to Warsaw, searching all the stores.

"Look no further," two rogues told them, "We'll sell you as much justice as you want." For 2,000 pieces of gold, the rogues a few hours later delivered a full barrel of justice, nailed tight and sealed all around, warning the Helmites, "More sure not to jostle it on your way. You know how hard it is to get justice these days."

When they got back to Helm, however, and reverently lifted the cover on the barrel, they smelled bad fish. "Justice of the world smells bad," they cried. "Woe! What shall we do?"
Whereupon Gimpel exclaimed, "That is the kind of justice you have in the rest of the world!"

After a great fire in Helm, the Rabbi consoled the people with the news that they could now expand their Synagogue, making it as large as Gimpel's potato patch. The Warsaw Jews gave money to their Helm brothers to fund the construction. But, carrying a great fortune, and convinced by scoundrels that they would be robbed on the road, the Helmites decided to buy feathers--which are light. And feathers, if stolen, could unlike money not be concealed by the thieves. Once back in Helm, they would sell the feathers and use the money to rebuild their Synagogue.

They set out back to Helm, and when a favorable wind arose, they reasoned that by releasing the feathers they could save themselves the trouble of carrying them. They let the feathers fly. Once back in Helm, the people cheered their heroes' return. And what of the feathers? "When you grow up," Gimpel told a saucy lad, "you'll understand that if a man can sometimes be late, surely feathers can also be late."

When after weeks the feathers had still not arrived, the Helmites decided to seek them in the larger world. And that is how the fools came to live among us.

If you think you might be one of them, read the book to verify their traits. Alyssa A. Lappen

Stories for both parents and kids
I was originally lent this book and after the rave reviews of my 10 year old boy, I bought our own copy. The stories are well-translated from the Yiddish and represent a small review of the better stories of the "wise men and women of Chelm". From the search for the wisest youth in Chelm (Q. "Why is herring salty" -- A. "Because it comes from the sea!") to the construction of the magnificent water mill on a mountaintop these stories gently, wisely and humorously look at humans in all their foolish charm.

Wonderful, funny book readers will treasure.
My father introduced this book to me by reading me stories from it. The stories are clever (unlike the wise men!) and well worth reading again and again. These stories have a gentle type of humor all too seldom seen. I love this book!

A great guide to offbeat Shakespeare--- NO BALCONY SCENES!
This book is attractive, sturdy and is formatted well. That being said, the content is equally stellar. The author knows a lot about each piece, and provides the background you need to make the character come alive at an audition, or just in your mind for reading. There are footnotes to the language that are useful, and the speeches themselves are constructed nicely and are good choices for any level of Shakespeare performer. MY only complaint, which isn't that important, is that the characters are not studied with as much depth as you would like if you were reading this book for literary pleasure. But it does give this book as an actors guide a sense of poetic freedom and freedom of creativity. Also good is the next volume "MORE Alternative Shakespeare Auditions for Women." Don't expect Juliet scenes or Beatrice monologues--- the "alternative" characters and speeches of Shakespeare get their 15 minutes! Recommended for anyone who has every wanted to be a Shakespeare "snob" at auditions and freshen up your Bard inventory. :O)

Very usefull!
I found this book indispencable as an actress. Many auditions call for alternative shakespearian monologues and this book has many good monologues combined with essential study notes.
