Through the year with Charlie Brown and company
"Watch Out, Charlie Brown," by Charles M. Schulz, collects a group of comic strips featuring Charlie Brown and the rest of the "Peanuts" gang. According to the copyright page, these strips date back at least to 1969 and 1970 and previously appeared as the second half of a collection titled "You're Out of Sight, Charle Brown."

Some plotlines included in "Watch Out" include Lucy's vocation as a "new feminist," Snoopy's term of office as Head Beagle (assisted by Woodstock), and Peppermint Patty's organization of a football team. The book features a number of familiar Peanuts motifs and themes, such as Lucy's psychiatric stand and her endless flirtation with Schroeder. Overall, there are a lot of Snoopy and Woodstock strips. The book also takes us through some of the high points of a Peanuts year: the first day of school, Halloween, Christmastime, etc.

There are a few dated cultural references (Rod McKuen, Bobby Hull, etc.) but overall the strips have that timeless Peanuts appeal. There are some characteristically wonderful moments, such as Linus' epiphany after building a snowman. And of course, the Charlie Brown/Snoopy relationship remains one of the best "boy and his dog" relationships ever created.

The Doctor is IN...
Lucy, famous for her love for Schroeder and crabbiness, has also become known for sitting behind her booth feeding outlandish views on life to her unsuspecting patients, namely Charlie Brown.

The entire cast of the Peanuts Gang seems to have wonderfully advanced philosophies for children under the age of eight. Sally's riddles of broken English, Linus' capacity for rational intellectual thought, yet his gulibility to belive his sister's "Little Known Facts" of life speeches astonishes me. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys humor. As an avid Peanuts fan, and playing LUCY in a community theatre preformance of YOUR A GOOD MAN, CHARLIE BROWN! Charles M. Schulz has always interested me.

Woodstock Blank Journal
My wife has really enjoyed using this fun journal. She always dreaded faculty meetings. I bought her this journal as a gift to help liven up her day. She loved the lined pages and cute pictures. There wasn't a meeting that went by that someone didn't comment on how cute it was. She appreciated the high quality paper that did not allow the pen to bleed through. She now refuses to use anything else.

Sally has to go to school: Peanuts daily strips 1962-1963
"You Can Do It, Charlie Brown" reprints classic "Peanuts" daily strips from 1962-1963, which explains the references to Casey Stengel and the final out of the 1962 World Series when the Giant's Willie McCovey hit a screaming line drive snared by the Yankee's Bobby Richardson for the most dramatic out ever to end a deciding Game 7. One of the interesting things when reading through any of these collections of Charles M. Schulz's beloved "Peanuts" strips is trying to figure out what the title should really have been, because I swear they always seem to be close but a bit off target. This time around the one who needs the encouragement that they can do it is not Charlie Brown, but younger sister Sally who is informed that she has to go to kindergarten (KINDERGARTEN?), because everybody has to go to school (SCHOOL?), so they can become educated (EDUCATED?), which only means trouble ahead for some poor teacher (TEACHER?). With great fear and trepidation Sally goes to school, but refuses to learn Latin.

Schulz not only milks Sally's first day of school for all it is worth, there are also several extended episodes dealing with Linus and his blanket (Lucy makes it into a kite which ends up over the ocean and then Grandma takes it away), and some more of those wonderful baseball stories ("How can we lose when we're so sincere?"). These are the years where Linus periodically wore glasses and Charlie Brown's favorite baseball player was sent to the minor leagues. For those of you who picked up on "Peanuts" when you were kids and necessarily missed out on the strips from the 1950s and 1960s, you really should go back and see what you missed. Clearly this period was the heyday of "Peanuts," and comic strips do not get much better than Schulz at his best.

The Peanuts gang is funny again
In You Have A Brother Named Spike?, Snoopy gets a visit from his brother, Spike, who lives with coyotes. The Peanuts gang is surprised that Snoopy even has an older brother. They take the news in their usual humorous stride.

Snoopy shines especially with his imagined conversation to Lucy and Charlie Brown about Spike. When Spike arrives, everyone welcomes him. Charlie Brown bought him a special bowl. but Lucy, after seeing Spike, feels that she needs to nurse him back to health.

This book is just plain fun. Lucy is a riot as she tries to help fatten Spike up in Linus' bedroom. I think the Peanuts have a great way of making anyone laugh and this book definitely proves that point. I'm glad that my nephew picked this book out at the library, while he was here on a visit. Brother Named Spike is another good way to introduce humor to kids.

More tales of the Little Red Haired Girl
This book was geared more twords children since it was baised off of a TV cartoon, but any Snoopy fan can enjoy it. The charming illistrations are not in comic strip style but instead take up pages, a plus in my oppinion. This is the story of the ongoing trials of Charlie Brown and his unrequitted love for the little red haired girl...a classic peanuts senario if there ever was one!
