A thinker's guide to the Bible
It did take me a couple tries to get through this book, but it was worth it. This commentary has everything I looked for. It explained the book in its historical context as well as its spiritual and contemporary importance. Some of the writing is a bit bombastic and difficult to wade through, but I learned a lot from it.

The Complete Guide to the Book of Proverbs is more current.
Hubbard's commentary is in-depth and accurate. He quotes the New King James Version but corrects mistakes such as Proverbs 30.1 where he correctly states that "Ithiel and Ucal" should be tranlated as phrases rather than names. Amazon's catalog lists the release date as January 1991 but the copyright in the book is 1989 (it came out initially as paperback which is now out of print). Biblical archaelogy and scholarship has made significant progress in the last 10 years. For a more up-to-date in-depth commentary on Proverbs read THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO THE BOOK OF PROVERBS by Cody Jones. It features numerous drawings and photos which give the reader a sense of the culture of the time. Six translations in parallel aid understanding of more difficult passages. Jones reveals for the first time in any commentary the secret identity of the overall editor of King Solomon's wise and witty sayings.

It was informative, and very good.
It gives a good grasp on the old testament period between the first deportation and the second deportation of Isreal to Babylon. It gives a good understanding of the people and culture at that time.

Advanced info - but how helpful?
I bought this book because I have the beautiful Connolly Tarot deck and I wanted a book with corresponding pictures and symbolism. It does indeed have pictures of the Connolly deck, and the descriptions provided for the minor arcana are great. There is indeed more information here on advanced readings than most people will need. HOWEVER, it does NOT include ANY details on the major arcana or any of the court cards. Apparently you are already supposed to know those, or it's assumed you already have the other Connolly books. This is probably an excellent book for the true Master, but it's not practical for day-to-day readings for the rest of us.

A book that is what it claims
On my shelves I have at least ten different books that give me all the basics for reading the Tarot. The basic spreads, the basic meanings of the majors and minors. However, they go no further. Ms. Connolly has gone further, rather than yet another book for beginners, she has created a book that goes beyond that, letting those who have learned the basics take them that next step.

A complete book of information.
I use the Connolly Master book as a main reference in deliniating my tarot spreads. The Malkuthian Key are opening the souls Karmic path. It is truly the most informative book I own on Tarot. Verification cards are no longer a mystery and using the Chronicles opens up all the allotted Verification cards. Wow it will blow you away. I have just recently started a tarot club dedicated Dr. Connollys work and we really enjoy using this book as reference in our trade. Elizabeth Summer.

Very Enjoyable, Recommended for Movie Buffs
I don't believe I've seen more than two of Mazursky's films but I enjoyed his book, especially the juicy chapter on his adventures with the increasingly more bizarre Peter Sellers. This is not a biography, but rather a series of essays about his involvement with different Hollywood people and some chapters about his current life and childhood. Recommended.

The Mensch (not the Mouse) Behind The Movies
An interesting, light and witty Summer read that gives you insight into Mazursky's career and tales of movie production. Mazursky, born in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn started out as an actor (Blackboard Jungle), moved on to be a comedy writer (Danny Kaye, I Love You Alice B Toklas) when acting parts were infrequent, and made his directorial debut with Bob and Carol and Ted and Alice. My favorite scenes in the book? When a young Mazursky catches his zade eating his bubbe's herring on the afternoon of Yom Kippur; when Eisner and Katzenberg ask Mazursky if he thinks that the I.B. Singer story (Enemies, A Love Story) is too Jewish... maybe it can be about the Cambodian Holocaust instead of the WWII one; when Richard Dreyfus pulls out of the Enemies project; and the creation of Down&Out in Beverly Hills.

I would have liked to have seen more!
I loved reading this book, both from the standpoint of appreciating Paul Mazursky the director of many of my favorite films and reveling in Paul Mazursky the no-holds-barred storyteller. But--and, I'm sorry, there is a 'but'---why devote one sentence to the great Art Carney, who Mazursky calls the most pure actor he'd ever worked with, and then not tell the reader WHY he feels that way about Carney? There are no anecdotes to share about Jill Clayburgh or Robin Williams? Come on, Paul, give! This lapse is mostly compensated for by Mazursky's tales of traveling in the "then" Soviet Union and South America, his memories of working for Danny Kaye and his sharing the bitter and the sweet about his family, his friends and the ups and downs of his life. The chapter about Mazursky's relationship with his mother is especially powerful and a reminder that much of the pathos within even his funniest films came honestly to him. So, five stars for what's here---just would've liked to have seen more!

a must have historical text for Latino [homsexuals]
This is a collection of essays which compare [homosexuals] in the US with those in Latin America. It looks at male homosexuality from a historical, pre-colombian, and tribal perspective as well. Murray is an erudite anthropologist and therefore does not fall into the loopholes in scholarship that many white men who "study" homosexuality in Latin America have. The author is a bit of an essentialist and that may rub constructionists the wrong way. Of his books on international male homosexuality, this is the best one buy far. I think every [homosexual] Latino who wants to know their own [homosexual] Latino history should own a copy.

Best overview of male homosexuality in Latin America
There are some excellent books on male homosexuality in particular sites (Hector Carrillo and Joseph Carrier on Guadalajara, Mexico; Richard Parker on (Rio) Brazil; Manuel Fernandez on (San Pedro, Honduras)) but this collection ranges much more widely, including material on indigenous cultures as well as the dominant machista one that varies only slightly from Texas to Tierra del Fuego, and incipient "modern gay" homosexuality.

About half the chapters are by Stephen Murray, who has considered reports from many societies and done fieldwork in Mexico, Guatemala, and Peru. He is very critical of the romantic view of "tolerance" ("anything goes"/ "there's no sin south of the border") but includes chapters by the two main purveyors of that view (Paul Kutsche and Richard Parker). The book contains a multiplicity of scholarly views and data ranging from the usual literary texts to ethnography and survey research on sexual behavior of males who have sex with males in Latin America.

Wonderful acocunt of the life of Peter Paul Rubens
If you admire Flemish Baroque art and admire Rubens, this book is for you. An intertesting and educational documentation of his life. See parts of him you never knew. Excellent source for studying and guide for Baroque art.

Well worth reading
I bought this book because I was researching some of Rubens more obscure paintings. It was a great help though I will admit that it has been written for the intellectual reader who already knows a fair amount about Ruebens, his life and work. Svetlana Alpers presents the reader with various paintings and sketches and discusses them in detail throughout the book. This is not an easy book to read but if you are patient and are willing to read it in several sittings then you will definitely benefit from it. A good solid read for anyone wanting to research Rubens on a more scholarly level.

Excellent Field Guide
This is a pocket size field guide. Don't expect a big or even medium size book. But for its small size it has much value as a traveler's guide. If you plan to go hiking or explore an exotic destination like Thailand, this book can be very important. We tend to forget that snakes are more common in other parts of the world. A field guide with many color photographs of snakes (in particular), lizards, and turtles can be very helpful in identifying which are venemous and dangerous. All photographs are accompanied by a brief description. Furthermore, it was made small specifically for explorers and field researchers. You will not have to carry many large books on the field. Even if you are just into reptiles, this book is a great buy because it is one of the few to touch this area of the world.

Snakes and other reptiles of southeast Asia is truly unique!
This book is a great book for a variety of reasons. Most of the pictures are good and the text is generally accurate. The reason I like this book is because Asia is so poorly researched and the wildlife, especially herps, is poorly studied and published. In general, this book provides a small glimpse to this great and undiscovered area of the world. Now, if only the amphibians were shown!

A Great Collection This is Not
This book is not one of the best among those in the Dover Art Library. A handful (about a half-dozen) of pictures are good with sufficient details and/or a tight organization to be appreciated. Most are so-so. Some are definitely fillers. It does not help that Rubens himself, according to the Publisher's Note, did not think highly of his own drawings and did not even sign a single one of them. All told, this selection is not impressive.

Rubens's paintings, rather than his drawings, should rightly be his legacy.

excellent
This is an excellent book on the drawings of Rubens. The works are very diverse and a whole range of different media are used. This is a great book to study for an art student.

This is now the best overall commentary on 1 Peter
For those who care, I am an evangelical pastor (and Ph.D. candidate) currently preaching through 1 Peter in the church I serve. I am using several commentaries, but this is the best overall. That should not be surprising since Acht. is able to build on many worthy predecessors, most notably Michaels (in the Word series), Goppelt and Kelly. Acht. is able to take full advantage of other works, and even many more recent studies in 1 Peter that have appeared since then. Being the latest work, by default, it is the most up to date and the most inclusive of previous works. Beyond its newness, why is the the best? 1) Acht. has very good exegetical and theological sensibilities. He does not get carried away with all the subtleties of the Greek (and Michaels is prone to do), and never loses sight of the overall picture (Evangelicals will disagree with some of his stances--notably his rigid egalitarianism), 2)As for usefulness, the format is a preacher's dream. All the scholarly information is placed in footnotes (don't forget to check these!), so the text reads clearly and quickly. I found this work much more useful in sermon preperation than Michaels work (in which all the references and scholarly notes are placed in the text!). My one complaint is the price of the Hermenia volumes. They are excellent hard cover books, but a tad more than most individuals (let alone pastors) want to pay for one commentary (considering there are 65 other books in the Bible). I would recommend that Hermenia put it out in a smaller, soft-cover edition and reduce the price to about 25$. This commentary deserves wide usage in our churches, and its current price probably causes many pastors to opt for the less expensive (and less good) works by Michaels or Davids. If they reduce the price, I would give it 5 instead of only 4 stars.

A great introduction but a little dry
This book is an excellent introduction to environmental issues from the standpoint of population and its impact on the environment.

It has interesting case studies from around the globe and engaging illustrations that really convey an understanding of the state of the world. However, I would have liked to see a more prescriptive section with recommendations for action as well.

I recommend checking out the table of contents on the "Look inside" link, because the TOC is very representative in this book's case. I also recommend checking out World Resources 2000-2001, the companion book to Bill Moyers' series "Earth on Edge." It's perhaps a bit more engaging although not as focused on population.
