PRACTICAL ELECTRICAL WIRING - 18th Ed.
This new (18th) edition of Practical Electrical Wiring is an excellent guide to basic (and also not-so-basic)residential, farm and commercial electrical wiring. It has been completely updated from the 17th edition, and reflects the latest changes in the 2002 National Electrical Code.

The text covers an astonishing range of subjects, from the basics of volts and amperes to some very solid material on grounding, wiring methods, residential service, and conductor sizing.

This book is quite different from the typical Sunset do-it-yourself guides that one picks up at Home Depot. It will not tell you how to rewire Aunt Sophie's favorite lamp. It will tell you about residential branch circuits, overcurrent devices (fuses and circuit breakers), outlet and switch boxes, residential and nonresidential lighting, special appliance circuits, safety, wiring methods, electric motors, and a great deal more.

It has an excellent section on how to modernize old work, including how to run wiring through ceilings, walls, and from floor-to-floor. And in case you've forgotten how, it also has a clear illustration of how to tie an Underwriter's Knot (see page 355)!

This really is an excellent book, obviously written by a person who has many years of practical experience and knows what he is talking about. It would serve well as a vocational school text and as a fine general reference book for the homeowner and for journeyman electrician.

To round it out, it is well illustrated, has useful NEC ampacity and load tables in the appendices, and has a very comprehensive index.

Recommended.

The only book you need to wire your house
We bought this hoping to get ideas for wiring our new house. With only this book we were able to wire our entire new house - from setting the power at the street - to wiring our well . Not only were we able to wire our entire house - it passed inspection on the first try with no corrections . A very valuable book for home owners and builders.

Selected Essays in Political Economy
Published in Paperback by Foundation for Economic Education (1968)
Author: Frederic Bastiat
Amazon base price: $12.95
Average review score:

Amazing
The first two essays in this book not only give the reader fundamentals but expands on them. "That Which Is Not Seen and That Which is Seen" cautions men on their superficial economic notions of only looking at the direct effects of human action, instead of the indirect as well. "The Law" provides a look into the use of force, namely plunder, and how governments have engaged in legalized plunder.

This book is much better than "Economics In One Lesson". Bastiat goes to greater lengths to show the reader, without a doubt, that he is correct in his thinking.

I find the first two essays alone to be worth every penny.

What should be seen is this book!
Bastiat's essays 'The Law' and 'What Is Seen and What Is Not Seen' are among the most influential and oft-quoted in libertarian thought. Just the 'broken window fallacy' in the latter essay inspired Henry Hazlitt's classic book Economics in One Lesson. These essays deflate the fallacies on which statists justify their 'solutions', speaking of which, I would bet that 'What Is Seen and What Is Not Seen' was also behind economist Thomas Sowell's quote "There are no solutions, only trade-offs." That the work of a long-dead Frenchman is still being cited by today's libertarians speaks of its importance and timelessness. Bastiat's description of "legal plunder" could have been written today, and, sadly, will probably be equally relevant two centuries hence.

Awesome
Everytime I read an article from this book, I am amazed that I am reading a translation (from French). How can a translation of a 150 year old text be more clear, and make more sense, than contemporary attempts in the mother tongue of English?

This man has one modern rival for clarity of economic common sense, and that is Murray Rothbard. It is a shame that Bastiats career was cut so short.

If you want a grounding in the fundementals of economics, and the pressure and accompanying fallacies of social pressure towards government, look no further than to the works of this man. All of his works are well worth the asking price.

Haiwatha's tale
An undying tale.. legend... song... Wonderful poetry, the language is simply astounding! I have read the russian translation by Bounin, which was as remarkable as the original.

The language/ rhythm is as mythical and lovely as the plot
A book for generations. Mine was published 1898 and given me by my mother whose father(b.1875) gave it to her. It goes to the heart of the Indian race, a people susceptible to mythology and magic as their last great hope. Read it with an open mind, imagination, and for its beauty.

This is a great campfire book that really makes you think.
"The Song of Hiawatha" is the best book I have ever been exposed to. Every time I hear the wonderful rhyme of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, I begin to think of what this land was like before the Europeans conquered it. It is a wonderful tale of peace between nations and a great book to read to children.

Verbal Behavior.
Published in Hardcover by Prentice Hall (1957)
Author: Burrhus Frederic, Skinner
Amazon base price: $48.60
Used price: $45.95
Average review score:

An unjustly neglected classic
Verbal behavior is a classic work and one the most neglected and underrated scientific texts of century, erroneously believed by many to have been conclusively demolished by Noam Chomsky (whose work in competition with Freud's is possibly the most overrated). Skinners analysis of verbal behavior differs from other accounts both in psychology and linguistics in being entirely naturalistic and free of the quite far-reaching metaphysical assumptions about 'meanings' and 'rules' inherent in traditional approaches. The latter focus on an idealized and abstract entity (grammatically correct language) which does not really exist, whereas Skinner analyses the verbal behavior actually performed by people. He demonstrates that a large amount of linguistic phenomena can be interpreted and explained by the principles of operant conditioning which have been demonstrated in laboratory experiments and he explores the consequences of this analysis for problems normally only addressed by philosophers, such as the nature of meaning, the social aspects of language, the possibility of a private language and the nature of thinking. Many philosophers will surprised to learn that some of the best ideas of the later Wittgenstein can be found more clearly and elegantly expressed by Skinner.

Brilliant, Eminently Useful, and Difficult
Skinner's VB is a fascinating read and is the bedrock on which subsequent analyses of VB stand. It was and is an ambitious, risky, brilliant work. Despite its flaws in the final few chapters, the influence of this work on modern clinical- and applied-behavior-analysis is significant. Skinner's chapters on tacting (the VB of accurately, usefully labeling one's own behavior and the objects or qualities of one's world) and manding (asking for what one wants or needs from others) should be required reading for every psychotherapist. Contrary to popular opinion, VB was not refuted by Chomsky and never died. The proof of this has been in its usefulness for analysis, intervention and the improvement of human behavior. This is not BFS's most accessible work. Thus, three suggestions: (re)Reading BFS's _Science and Human Behavior_ OR _About Behaviorism_ may be an advisable refresher before tackling VB. Additionally, Kohlenberg and Tsai's (1991) Functional Analytic Psychotherapy (especially their chapter on the Self)will make clear, simply and compellingly, the importance of a rich, carefully trained repertoire of verbal behavior to the healthy development of the human. Finally, spending some time looking at the data - actual studies of verbal behavior in the journals JABA or VB - really highlights that a useful marriage of theory, philosophy and technology were brought forth by this book. Sr+ reading!

Fortunately Unlike Other Books
This is not just an excellent book for those of us who are students of behavior; it is also an effect tool for those unfamiliar with the scientific principles of behavior analysis.

Dr. Skinner describes the different kinds verbal behavior, behavior that is reinforced as a result of the mediation of other people with similar repertories, produced by the contingencies of reinforcement on the one hand, and the way in which they are formed into effective verbal discourse and successful action on the other. Therefore, it is primarily with behavior of the former and latter that a behavioral understanding of what you are doing and saying is profited.

Dr. Skinner's approach to verbal behavior is derived from countless experiments in the analysis of behavior, experiments in which the principles of behavior have been rigorously studied, demonstrated, and verified. It is consequently not unnatural that finding it practicable and convenient, as undoubtedly it is, to verbal behavior is justifiable. Such a view obviously renders it easy to welcome behavior as an appropriate subject matter in its own right. Moreover, it is downright profitable to welcome behavior, which its first implication is the fact of objective and successful action!

A Truly Amazing Work of Scholarship
I've never actually read this book, but I know the author and he is a really smart guy. Jamie's combination of on the ground research and his ability to simplify complex concepts for people less intelligent than himself make this book a must read for anyone interested in Western Responses to Human Rights Abuses in Cambodia. But don't take my word for it. Although I tend not to trust people who bear an uncanny resemblance to their non-identical siblings I have a tremendous amount of confidence in the other reviewers. Well done Jamie!!!

Fantastic book
The previous reviewer is a genius. What a fine analysis of a truly remarkable work of non-fiction.

this book is amazing
even though my brother is the author of this book, I feel I am an impartial reader. this is one of the finest books ever written in English.

One Of The Most Detailed Examinations Of Windows 98!
Windows 98 is alive and doing quite well despite government and competitor attempts to block its full implementation. It is standard on new computers systems worldwide and its impact has been breathtaking. Although a number of books have been written on this new operating system to help users, several standout as being among the better ones available. The Windows 98 Bible written by Fred Davis and Kip Crosby is one of them. This single book offers one of the most detailed examinations of Windows 98 on the market.      This comprehensive guide will provide readers with in-depth understanding of desktop controls, including the start menu, fonts and font use, display settings, multitasking, the use of pointing devices, installing software programs, installation and use of printers and other hardware devices, multimedia tools, system tools, network operation, the use of other languages, and upgrading computers. Readers will learn how to use Internet Explorer and Outlook Express included with the operating system.     The authors provide readers with an explanation of the improvements and advance features of this new operating system that will greatly enhance their computing experience. The most useful features of this book in my estimation are the coverage of desktop interfacing with the Internet, multitasking among programs, and file management that are so important for business use today.     Another feature of this book that will appeal to more advanced users is the coverage of the Registry, the file database that stores all the information about one's computer, installed hardware, and software programs. While most users will not require immediate information about this important system feature, it is available at hands' reach when such times may arise!     As readers make their way through this nearly 1,000 page book they will gain more than adequate knowledge about Windows 98. In fact, companies that depend upon this operating system will do well to read up on it and familiarize themselves with what it can accomplish for them. This friendly book, laced with wit and wisdom, offers loads of helpful instruction, some in the form of tips, tricks, and tweaks, to make the most productive use of it. This book is highly recommended for intermediate and advanced users!     Best quote from the book: "What's this Windows 98 thing?!" It's what Windows 3.x never could have been. It's what Windows 95 always should have been. It's what will come pre-installed on your next computer. And because Windows 98 is all those things, it's also what we wrote this book about. We hope you like it. - from the foreword

A clever balance of wit, wisdom and in-depth information.
What an enjoyable read is this book! Most books on such technical subjects are mostly re-telling what can be found in the manual or on-line help. This book really takes you inside Microsoft's operating system and pulls no punches while offering both praise and criticism of everything from Microsoft's attitudes to its system tools. Along the way, details emerge that I haven't found in any other source including a wonderful glossary called "Microsoft's Networking Vocabulary" that offers even a breakdown of what T1 stands for, not just the speed it represents. It's the attention to the details that sets this book apart from the rest. I can't imagine a better resource to have; why the index alone (almost 40 pages) is worth the price of the book!

This has to be the best book on Windows 98!
I run a small business and I depend on computers every day - but that doesn't mean I know everything about them. The Windows 98 Bible was written for people like me, especially because Microsoft doesn't bother to write manuals any more. I guess it would cost them too much :-).

EVERYTHING about Windows 98 is in this book, and it's clear, logical, easy to read, and sometimes even funny. Unlike some of the Windows books I've read, it's not entirely pro-Microsoft, but Microsoft will like it anyway, because it will convince people to upgrade from Windows 95. It's convinced me; I'm going to upgrade as soon as I can buy the software.

Portrays Africa during its formative years
These are set in eight different African countries and grew out of the author's experiences as a State Department officer on the Congo during the 1960s. While they are more literary in content, they also portray Africa during its formative years just after its colonial regimes had dissolved, providing important keys to African history and culture.

Quick trip, take me back soon.
Each story I read in this entertaining collection takes me a little closer to Africa. I willingly surrender to the heat, the exhilaration, the frustration, the wonder, and the beauty of a continent. The images stay with me long after I've put the book down, and I find myself thinking about Africa in my daydreams instead of golf.

I also feel like I've made a dozen new friends. I have to remind myself that they are just characters. The stories are good. They are honest, and Hunter shares insights that make me feel richer for having read them. I'd like to read more.

Chopin Through His Contemporaries: Friends, Lovers, and Rivals (Contributions to the Study of Music and Dance)
Published in Hardcover by Greenwood Publishing Group (1999)
Author: Pierre Azoury
Amazon base price: $64.95
Average review score:

Chopin's Friends, Lovers, and Rivals
Fans of Chopin will welcome this well-written and thoroughly-researched volume. It is a detailed treatment of Chopin's relationships to some of his closest friends and associates as revealed in the extant correspondence, some of which appears here in English for the first time. Of the ten chapters, the first four concern Chopin's involvement with family, early friends, and education in Warsaw (1810-1830), while the remaining six describe his associations during his Paris years (1831-1849). Included are chapters that take up Chopin's relationships to his teacher Josef Elsner, the woman he almost married, Maria Wodzinska, his friends August Franchomme and Woyciech Grzymala, his fellow pianist and composer Franz Liszt, the singer Pauline Viardort, and George Sand's daughter, Solange. Chopin's complex relationship to George Sand, as formed and modified through the other persons that entered their lives, is dealt with throughout the last four chapters and is undoubtedly one of the more revealing aspects of the book. The last chapter closes with a passage from a letter written by Solange in 1896, that gives a very sensitive and touching description of Chopin's character and impact upon her own life.

The narrative presupposes some acquaintance with Chopin's life and music, so those who are uninformed about the basic details might wish to consult a standard biography before turning to this volume. A superb bibliography and index are included, and Azoury gives ample information in his introduction and extensive notes about further sources to turn to. While one does not learn about Chopin's music from this volume, Azoury indicates that the book concerns Chopin's life, not his music, and that the compositions "are not, as sometimes suggested, a chronicle of his life." Chopin's work, career, and associations are rich enough to warrant still further treatments of these matters; we can be thankful that this volume takes us far as it does.

Fascinating insight with enormous research
Starting from an earlier love of Music coupled with personal initiative to bring about Chopin's friends , lovers and rivals at an historic point in their impressive account . There are few prople I have met and known who could approach the subject of this most beloved of Composers from a unique perspective . Doctor Azoury's research and knowledge enabled him to produce this entirely new portrait of the Musician , revealing much of what was previously concealed.
