Meet These Interesting Folks
And I thought I knew the Ojibwa. Hah. I'll tell you one thing. If you're ever going to be on the Berens River in Manitoba with a few days to kill and plan on meeting people from the Ojibwa Nation, well you've just got to have this great book. The description of the Ojibwa diet alone is worth the cover price. And the index is to die for.
Surprised it hasn't yet been made into a major motion picture.

Excellent Insight in birth of Fruedian Thought
The book has the normal flow for a Stone book with very good research and interesting trivia. Plus, Stone does his best to explain the origin of Fruedian thought and the struggles of Sigmund Frued to get his word heard in very hostile environment. He shows the delicate balance between his student life, to his married life and his struggles to learn a pyschology which was never respected in his life time. Also shows, America becoming a strong society which has just started to influence global thoughts and respect global thought leadership.

The Patrick McManus

Great package! Longtime fans should watch for duplication
Patrick McManus' gut-splitting stories are always hilarious, but especially when they're read on audio by George Irving. This is an excellent package of many of dh audio's fine recordings of these stories.

PLEASE NOTE: It is a repackaging of previously released items. This set has the following items, which some people may already have (I did).
Mountain Goats Never Say Cheese; How To Fish A Creek; But Where is the Park, Papa?; A Fine and Pleasant Misery; Further Teachings of Rancid Crabtree; Cubs; Mean Gifts; The Rescue; Boating Disorders; Nude With Other Wildlife; Out of Sync; Summer Reading; Scritch's Creek; Throwing Stuff; A Brief History of Boats and Marriage; The Cabin at Spooky Lake; Boating Disorders; Cry Wolf; Out of Sync.

For those who haven't already acquired most of the tapes through other DH Audio packages, it's a good group, at a good price.

As always, it's hilarious stuff.

Trembling lips
The last time my friend from Vilna visited, in 1993, I shared this book with her, purchased a few years earlier at a New York remainder sale. It contains both the Yiddish and English translations, on either side of a page, of 39 Jewish poets. Her lips began to tremble and move as she read the verses, in Yiddish, of poets she had known in Vilna, Abraham Sutzkever and very likely Moyshe Kulbak.

It's no wonder. Listen to the fifth stanza of Sutzkever's "In the Hamlet," about Siberia, where his father died in the 1930s. "Into the quenched corners of the room,/ The moon breathes its solitary brilliance./ My father's face is white as the moon,/ The snow's silence weighs upon his hands."

(Translation by Chana Bloch)

The poems are all that good, and better. It is eerie reading these great works. The rich literary heritage of Yiddish was all but wiped out in the Shoah. Yiddish remains vibrant in certain Jewish communities today, but only as a liturgical language. Few poets now work in Yiddish.

The great Yitskhok Leybush Perets, born in Zamosc, Poland in 1852 died in Warsaw in 1915. Leyb Naydus died in Grodno in 1918 and Moyshe-Leyb Halpern, from Zloczow, died in 1932 in New York. But several of these poets themselves perished in the Holocaust--including Kulbak (1940), Yisroel Shtern (Warsaw, 1942), Yisroel Rabon (Ponary, 1941). Others were swept into the maw of the Soviet war on culture, dying who knows where.

Some survived and later emigrated. Rokhl Korn, for example, fled to--and then from--the Soviet Union. In a sense, Aaron Teitlin, who emigrated from Uuarovo, Russia to New York in 1939 writes for them all. Certainly, he writes for me.

Six Lines

"I know that in this world no one needs me,/

me, a word-beggar in the Jewish graveyard.

Who needs a poem, especially in Yiddish?

Only what is hopeless on this earth has beauty/

and only the ephemeral is godly

and humility is the only true rebellion."

(Translated by Robert Friend)

We all need these poems and their humility. You can see why my friend's lips trembled. Alyssa A. Lappen

Trivia Galore
Probably the most interesting and compulsive books I have ever read. Everything you didn't know you always wanted to know. Some of the information is a bit out of date, but the amount of useful trivia, facts and nonsense makes up for that. Written in true "People's Almanac" style, the dispassionate viewpoints of the authors is makes for an unique reading experience and makes it impossible to put the book down. If you have even the slightest interest in trivia, this is the book for you.

Excellent

very helpful!
This easy-to-read primer is just that: a very clear introduction to Kleinian thought. If you are put off (as I am) by certain aspects of Kleinian theory, don't give up the struggle to grasp it without taking a look through this book, which grounds the theory in easily understood clinical examples and applications. Highly recommended. I came away with a greater appreciation of the usefulness of many Kleinian concepts.

Clear and concise
This book provides outstanding preparation for legal practice. It is authoritative, clear, innovative and concise. I have used it in many cases to prepare my own attorneys for trial. No one who expects to appear frequently in court should be without this guide.
