A Dynamic Partnership!
Here's yet another--MUST READ--for the forensic expert! The authors have formed a "poetic partnership," especially in that both the legal and the psychiatric/psychological fields are successfully brought together in their focus. The text is clearly extensively researched, well-documented and, perhaps, most importantly, is packed full of valuable information! A clear line of communication is established between both the legal and the mental health professional. An extensive list of references is also provided. Rogers and Shuman have done an admirable job with CONDUCTING INSANITY EVALUATIONS!
Reviewer is the author of Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity,(which is also on Amazon.com).

Innovative Book about an Innovative Building
Content aside, this small book is worth buying for the packaging and formatting alone. The entire book is cut into an unusual circular shape and packaged in a matching clear plastic case that flips open -- beautiful! The content of the book is wonderful, too, with concise, descriptive sentences on each page and crisp color photos (both overviews and shots of very specific structural details) throughout. There are even some computer renderings in the middle of the book that are printed on trace paper (or a similar type of paper), unlike the color photos that appear on heavier glossy paper. This title offers a great overview of Rogers' project, from conception to completion, and the unusual style of the book mirrors the grandiosity of the structure itself.

Richard K. Walton, author
Most birdsong CDs/tapes are lengthy "lists" of birdsongs. The "Birding by Ear" series is a unique tutorial that teaches you to recognise and recall birdsongs. If you want to learn to identify birds by their songs and calls this is the product for you! "More Birding by Ear" includes many of the Eastern warblers as well as shorebirds, flycatchers, rails and other groups.

Wonderful Honest Look at Ginger Rogers
For anyone who is an admirer of Ginger Rogers, or simply likes to read about true and honest people who have found success in practicing virtues such as hard work, honesty, sobriety, and a spectactularly positive outlook on life will take great joy in learning about this wonderful woman. Dick Richards paints a very honest homage to a woman who is the symbol of the American dream. This has to be one of the most honest biographies I have ever read. It's really tricky to write about the lives of Hollywood stars because of the abundance of gossip and the constant debate about whether or not such and such part of their life is true. But Mr. Richards explains in the beginning that he is in no way trying to write a true biography, which would take much time in interviewing and getting to know Miss Rogers much better, but simply to give some praise to someone who truly deserves it...And rightly so. Ginger Rogers is someone to be greatly admired. Her integrity, her clean, healthy life is an inspiration, especially in her line of work. She was the example of the American dream and what makes you admire her more is not only her worldly reknown beauty, but her fabulous personality and sense of humor. This is a great book for anyone who wants to read about a great woman. It truly makes you want to jump up and be a better person. Though at times Mr. Richards does fall on other tangents, you can really feel how much he respects and worships Ginger Rogers.

Superb Text for Mental Health Professionals
If you want to improve your diagnostic and assessment skills, this is one of the best investments you can make in a book. Rogers' books are always well-researched and this one is no exception. Don't rely on "clinical lore" to guide your assessment procedures (e.g., did you know that asking patients to explain the meaning of a proverb is an unreliable method to measure, even roughly, abstract reasoning ability?) You not only will learn which instruments are the most reliable and valid, Rogers will also guide your selection of instruments so that you use the instrument most appropriate for the patient population that you serve. Forensic psychologists and psychiatrists, you should also read this text to ensure that your assessment procedures will stand up under scrutiny, under Daubert criteria or otherwise.
Handbook of Standards and Resources for Spoken Language Systems

Amazon base price: $175.60

a comprehensive information source for speech processing
This book gives a very comprehensive overview of all aspects of spoken language processing. It was written by leading members of the spoken language community (Expert Advisory Group on Language Engineering Standards). It is a very valuable reference source for designers of spoken language systems. Each chapter is concluded by a set of recommendations. For readers with a linguistics or CS background, it provides a comprehensive survey of all aspects of spoken language processing, and can be used as introduction to the field. Annoyingly, the book contains a number of typos, and could benefit from thorough proofreading. The book is also available as four reasonably priced paperbacks, some of which are not listed in the Amazon Catalog.

Very colorful. Simple, but fun!
My 10 month old daughter LOVES this book! It's illustrated with large, colorful photographs (with simple white backgrounds) and the cover and pages are so far chew-proof.
Lots of options so it really grows with your child. Each number is given a two page spread and within each one it shows the numeric number (7), the written number (seven), and a count TO the number (1 2 3 4 5 6 7). A few pages in the back have counting and match up games for older babies. Lots of fun and my daughter really gets a kick out of the 10 Busy Babies at the end...

Very thorough
The author is a psychiatrist who pays closer attention to people with personality disorders than to normal people. The case studies are very interesting, although often tragic, because they focus on sick people (both Gay and straight).
He points out that Gay people are not necessarily "sicker" or "healthier" than straight people.
The author explains that development of human sexuality is very complex and differs from individual to individual. However, his specific theory, while not radical, has incited some controversy.

Every human culture has a myth of the "fall"
Did you really think Adam and Eve were unique or unprecedented? Every human culture has a myth of the "fall" from an original golden-age of peace and prosperity to death and disease, including eskimos, aborigines and Native Americans. The author examines "fall" myths from a variety of angles, presenting all the major theories as to what they might mean. "Memories and Visions of Paradise" presents a much clearer overview of the "saddest story ever told" than any previous book on the topic. A commendable effort, well worth picking up for anyone interested in myth or religion.

Part of the pleasure of reading Fry's book is the way he describes Cézanne's development as if--to borrow another of Woolf's phrases--it were a "double story." In order to explain the radical difference between Cézanne's early works and his mature ones (respectively, before and after his turn to Impressionism), Fry imagines a psychologically troubled artist, who can only find peace by looking outside of himself: that is, away from invented imagery and towards nature. This split, for Fry, corresponds with the difference between the 'Romantic' and the 'Classic' sides of Cézanne's personality; but the schism is never absolute, and even in the artist's maturity, there is always the possibility that the repressed 'Romantic' will return. This, indeed, is how Fry explains Cézanne's continued interest in painting pictures of Bathers and other quasi-erotic subjects.
Such a blend of art criticism and novelistic story-telling makes for a fascinating and provocative read. Certainly that is how D.H. Lawrence seems to have found the book, and his 'An Introduction to These Paintings' is an attempt to wrest Cézanne from the grips of Fry's compelling account.
