Excellent, Scholarly
This is a top-notch book, with excellent research, and a great deal of information on the Mauser rifle, among other things. If you want to know everything there is to know about the history of German or Austro-Hungrarian Small Arms up to 1918, this _is_ the book! An excellent buy.

This book was a threat to institutionalsit church leaders.
Read this book and see why the author was silenced by the Vatican. Some consider his book a threat because of its reaviling truth. However, he is not going beyound what the catholic church all ready teaches. Thats why its so threatening to some church leaders. The author calls the church into a focus of the community beining a work of the Spirit rather than a dictatoriship institution. Non roman catholic should also read this book because its not an attack on the catholic church, its an attack on institutionalsit thinking, which most churches strive on.

Dark Age Naval Power: A Reassessment of Frankish and Anglo-Saxon Seafaring Activity

The origins of Germanic tribal naval power and more.
John Haywood has brought a wide range of resources together to show the development of Germanic naval power from c.200 BCE through the 9th century. While most of his emphasis is on the Saxon and Frankish pirates in the North Sea, Haywood also provides information on early Germanic ships and their evolution.

Dark Ages is extensively footnoted and indexed. Included are maps and several drawings.

Information on early Continental tribes not found elsewhere in English helps make this a valuable text to anyone interested in the history of the Saxons and the Frankish tribes as well as pre-Viking raiders and ship building.

This revision of Haywood's earlier work is by far the best and most comprehensive review of the subject I have found.

Teen Power!
I read this book in German, as "Die Geheimnisse des Zauberers".I only have got 3 Teen Power books, and I¢¥m not sure if I can still buy some in Germany. But let¢¥s hope it. In the "Sorcerer¢¥s Apprentice" Tom is the one who is telling the story. I like him very much, because he nearly (never) looses his humor. Of course, I like the other teens too, but it was interesting to see what a person is in Tom, not only the joking boy, but also a sometimes offended teen. Sid, the magician is also a nice person to think about a bit more than to see only the joking old man. I think Tom and Sid are a bit from the same typ. Well, this shan¢¥t be more than a short note, so TEEN POWER!

Comprehensive guide to VB coding
I borrowed this book from the library. However, when I found myself writing soooo much down, I skimmed through the remaining chapters. Finding that I would be interested in the rest of the book, I decided that it would be foolhardy not to buy it. Then I checked the number of pages. Again, there were soooo many pages remaining (hundreds) that it would be counterproductive to continue as I had been. This is an excellent value even without the included disk (which would not work on my Windows '95 machine). I plan to buy the Windows '95 update

clarity! a welcome change
this book includes one of the most helpful accounts of the connection between the 'social contract'and the 'second discourse'in rousseau's philosophy that i've ever read. hoffman is clear and to the point, but manages, at the same time, to bring up original and insightful points about the rousseauian project. i highly recommend it.

One of the finest wartime diaries ever published
John Colville's wonderful, readable diary of the Second World War should be required reading for anyone interested in 20th century British history and the life of Winston Churchill. At times funny, moving, heartbreaking and always compulsively readable, Colville's writings allow one to see the inside of 10 Downing street in the weeks and months when the nation was preparing for Nazi invasion.

The diary can be broken down into four parts, with the last three concerning Colville's life as a soldier in the war and his life as a private secretary under first Clement Atlee and then the second Premiership of Churchill. These three sections are all readable and fun.

What makes the diary so wonderful, however, is the first four hundred pages, concerning Colville's role as private secretary first to Neville Chamberlain and then to Winston Churchill during the first two years of the war. In the diaries Colville becomes something of a stand in for the larger British public; at first admiring Chamberlains moral stature while remaining skittish about Churchill's supposed "unreliability." Later, after the summer of 1940, Colville would come to love and admire Churchill, and view him as the savior of his nation.

This book is must reading for those interested in Churchill and the war. Not for the big picture, mind you, as we all know how the story ends. It is the little things that makes Colville's diary so wonderful, like snippets of conversation Churchill had when sat at dinner or the bon mots he threw at friends and foes alike. Colville work humanizes Churchill, and reminds of why he is so worthy of our admiration.
